“The food is consistently very good & fresh. The burgers are smaller than they used to be & more than a little pricey. The shrimp cocktail is very tasty with horseradish in the sauce. The french fries & coleslaw are also really good too.“

Eggs Benedict

“Whiskey River Bar & Grill, nestled in the heart of the North Shore is more than just a watering hole—it's a beacon of camaraderie, a testament to the alchemy of good food and spirited beverages, masterfully blended under the watchful eyes of its custodians, Matt, Virginia, and the unparalleled Athena. With an ambiance that whispers of nights filled with laughter and music, this establishment offers a sanctuary for those weary of the world's cacophony, seeking solace in the arms of a perfectly crafted gin martini or the crispy embrace of a chicken sandwich that beckons with the promise of addiction. Here, every visit is an odyssey through culinary delights, from the eggs benedict that sing a symphony of flavors to the embrace of a free parking lot that awaits without judgment. Whiskey River is not just a bar; it's a crucible where the spirits of hospitality meld with the essence of community, birthing an experience that transcends the mundane. In an age where the digital ether threatens to usurp our sense of connection, Whiskey River stands as a bastion of the tangible, the real. It's a place where the strumming of a guitar on a Wednesday jam night brings strangers together, bound by the universal language of music and the magnetic pull of Matt's hospitality. It's a realm where Athena, with her unmatched prowess behind the bar, weaves magic into every drink, turning first-time visitors into lifelong patrons, drawn back time and again by the allure of a place that feels like a second home. The transformation under new ownership is a delicate dance between preservation and innovation, where the essence of what made Whiskey River a beloved haunt remains untouched, even as subtle changes imbue it with new life. It's a testament to the understanding that in the world of bars and grills, the soul of a place is its people—both those who serve and those who are served. In Glenview, a town that dances to the rhythm of its own beat, Whiskey River Bar & Grill is more than a mere establishment; it's a chapter in the story of a community that finds joy in the simple pleasures of good food, great drinks, and the company of those who share in the unspoken bond of humanity. It is here, amidst the laughter and clinking glasses, that one remembers the beauty of life in its unvarnished truth, a reminder that in the end, it is not the places we go, but the memories we make and the hearts we touch that truly matter. So, to those wandering souls searching for a place where authenticity reigns supreme, where the gin is always perfect, and the chicken sandwich becomes a craving you can't ignore, look no further than Whiskey River Bar & Grill. Here, in this haven on Waukegan Road, you will find more than just a meal or a drink—you will find a piece of home.“

Casey's Corner Bar • $
2733 W Devon Ave, Chicago

“I was out with a friend who insisted we have a drink so since we were nearby I suggested this place since it's one I've been eyeballing for a while. Upon entering I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that it was not nearly as dark inside as I'd anticipated from glancing in the door while passing by on foot on several occasions. The bartender was a friendly lady who didn't seem the least bit unhappy to have a couple of non-regulars popping in. We only stayed for one drink but it was a pleasant experience and it's my kind of very low key bar so I can see myself stopping in from time to time for a drink or two. My first impression is that it's a good little neighborhood bar. The beer prices here surprised both me and my friend as being very reasonable. A few hours later when we walked by this place the bartender was outside getting a couple hits of nicotine and smiled and said hi as we passed by the place on our way someplace else. Yeah, that greeting wasn't anything major, but since we weren't stopping in I felt it was a nice personal touch that just reinforces that I'll stop in again.“

Smilin' Jim's Saloon Bar • $
6306 N Western Ave, Chicago

“I miss this place. It was my regular spot in 2007 & 2008 before I moved back to California. Very diverse crowd of regulars from different walks of life, but everyone knew each other. Jim is awesome. If I could still give him my money for alcohol, I would.“

Here's Cheers Lounge Bar • $$
8006 W Oakton St, Niles

“Regulars were friendly enough, considering we are from out of town. Local pizza place supplies the fresh made, then frozen, smaller pizzas. Were pretty decent. Otto was the absolute best bartender. Even suggested we come in on another bartenders shift the next day, even though it would not benefit him monetarily. He ran that bar like he's been doing it his whole life.“

Skokie House Bar • $
7887 Lincoln Ave, Skokie

“It is what it is, a neighborhood watering hole "where everybody knows your name." Divey? I'd rather describe this come-as-you-are joint as "down to earth." Neither trendy nor upscale, it nonetheless feels as familiar and comfortable as a well-worn easy chair. When we visited, the bar was populated with Generation X-ers and Millennials. The owner is friendly and welcoming. There is a small room in the back which can be rented for private parties. There's no kitchen, but you can bring in your own food.“

Mark II Lounge Bar • $

“An 8ft Valley, 8ft Diamond, and 9ft (Brunswick??) pool table are all free to use here, and there are always decent players playing. They also sell (frozen/box) pizza that tastes amazing late at night, and they serve it all the way until close, which is awesome.“
