I can't believe I hadn't ever been to Story before this! We had a pretty early rez (5pm Sunday) so arrived with the place to ourselves, but by 7pm it was packed. And rightfully so.The pear goat cheese salad and duck empanadas were fantastic. Dishes where you can taste every individual unique flavor (and the candied nuts are crushed small so they don't just take over everything).I ordered the lobster and shiitake tagliatelle as my entree and I would have licked the plate if it would have seemed appropriate. All 3 plates were so delicately done and absolutely delicious.I really liked Brian's entree too: beef short rib is apparently a staple on their menu and I can see why. The meat is perfection from the sauce to the tenderness. The gnocchi were a little tighter than I expected (more like spaetzle) but the perfect bite was a little of the crispy onion ring, a little of the flake-apart beef, and a mini gnocchi. We got fries to start and demolished them, though they were just a tiny bit over salted. The aioli is the key.I liked the lemon cake but LOVED the carrot cake with mascarpone buttercream and crunchy salty bits on top.Pair with good cocktails and a great wine list and we were happy diners.

We went to Story to celebrate our anniversary. I hadn't been in years and my fiancé hadn't ever been! We had a reservation and were seated right away. Our waiter instantly greeted us to fill our waters gave us some time to decide on our cocktails. We enjoyed some starters and shared the duck empanadas and the fries. Both were so delicious but the empanadas were SO good!! There were a handful of starters that looked so good but we were happy with the ones we chose. For dinner I ordered the short rib and my fiancé ordered the saffron risotto. My short rib was so tender and fell apart the way short rib should. The saffron risotto was really flavorful. We both really enjoyed our dishes and had clean plates afterwards! For dessert with we ordered the lemon cake which isn't normally something I would get but it was really good! It was light but still full of flavor. The cake and the ice cream together were super good. Overall, we had a nice meal here! It is definitely on the pricer side so I recommend saving special occasions to go here. We were really pleased with everything we ordered and our night as a whole.

Everything was amazing. Maria our server was very knowledgeable and friendly, the food was outstanding. The lobster tagliatelle is a must. The best part of my night though was Jon, the manager. From the greeting to the door to the goodbye at the end, Jon makes you feel special. Will definitely be

We went to celebrate a late Valentine's Day. The wine list has choices for every taste. The food is innovative and delicious. The pear salad was to die for. The mushroom bisque was flavorful and the bread served with it wonderful. I had the Risotto and my Husband had the chicken. Both were beyond compare. Donuts for dessert finished off the meal. I would highly recommend Story for special occasions and date nights. If they brought back the wine tasting dinners on Thursday nights it would be perfect. I really miss them and nobody else does it as well as Chef Carl.

This was our first time dining at Story. We look forward to returning! We started with the duck empanadas - unique perfection! We were also pleased with our entrees and with the wine list and chose a bottle. Our service was excellent and we hope to try Story seasonally to see how the menu changes ...

This was a solid dining experience for my girlfriend and I for Valentines Day. We had a reservation and got sat next to the window. I enjoyed the spot. The inside was nice. The list of wine is intimidating and would be stressful for someone who does not know wine. Thankfully the server was knowledgeable and recommended a Bordeaux style wine from Washington. This was a great recommendation and paired well with the richness of each of the following dishes. The bread that came out was delicious. I could tell that the kitchen is very precise with the use of salt. I tasted every bite of the bread because it was salted nicely. Unfortunately they only gave me and my girlfriend three pieces of bread so we had to split the third. We ordered the ravioli and the lobster pasta as our appetizers. The server was nice enough to split the lobster appetizer so we could share more easily. The lobster was tasty. I could taste the sweetness of the lobster throughout the entire pasta dish. To me the sauce was very technical and had a wonderful mouth feel. The ravioli were the star of the show. The burrata cheese is a great alternative to ricotta in a ravioli. The braised pork topping is to die for, even though I wish there was more pork. It almost got lost in the creamy richness of the entire meal. The sauce was similar to the lobster dish. It was a nice technical emulsion that left a wonderful mouth feel. I think a little squeeze of lemon in the sauce would've brightened everything up. Either way , this plate was delicious. For our entrees we both decided on the short ribs because we imagined it as a great pairing for the red wine. The short rib had a wonderful maillard reaction going on on the outside with a nice bit of char as well. The inside was falling apart and was cooked beautifully. The sauce was some sort of demi gloss sauce with herbs. If you weren't having wine with this dish, you'd need something sweet or acidic to break the richness of the meat and demi gloss sauce. The onion rings on top were super crunchy but to me, they are a bit confusing in a fine dining situation. I wasn't sure what they added to the dish other than textural contrast. Either way, I ate both onion rings and they were crunchy and delicious. For desert we got the carrot cake. It looked beautiful. I was slightly disappointed in the texture and moisture of the cake. I thought it was dry. The one saving grace for the carrot cake was the light whipped frosting that had air incorporated nicely. They also had little apples that were very uniform. The apples did not have any taste but I commend their knife work. My experience was solid. I would come back. I wish Yelp had a 4.5 stars because it wasn't perfect, but damn near.

Story is one of my favorite restaurants. However, last night it took 1 hour to get our food and our dinner wasn't as great as previous visits to the restaurant. Not sure what happened last night.

An outstanding experience in every way. Took friends who had never been to Story. They were super impressed. It started with superior food, great service, a lively ambiance, great desert, and a personal send off from the manager! Fantastic experience. And on our many visits, it is consistently one of the best restaurants in KC!

We did the Valentines Day Pre menu. We had a great time and the service and meal were exceptional. Timed courses came out accordingly with no delays or temp issues. Every course was excellent. They even managed our Gluten Free requests and covered it on the first visit to the table. Well done Story!

Disappointed

Made a valentines reservation two weeks in advance and even with the reservation didn't get seated until 30 minutes late due to not enough tables. Wasn't aware there was a pre-fixed menu that night that you had to order from at $150 per person and no substitutions. Was hoping that with us not being seated until 7:30 (reservation was at 7) that they could've done more service wise or in terms of final bill but they did not. The food was good, but overall what we paid was not worth the service of experience.

The setting, service, and food were wonderful. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we walked in the door. We had an early reservation and were not rushed for others coming in to dine after us. The mahi mahi and salmon were both delicious!
