The sliced mutton was really special. It was my first Owensboro bbq experience, and it may well be among my best ever. And I cannot leave out those bbq beans, truly delicious and unforgettable. Thanks for making me a convert.

Fantastic BBQ joint I found on the way back home from Mammoth Cave. Loved the mutton in particular, only BBQ place I’ve been that offered mutton but I’d love to have it again. A+

I drove 3 hours to try this place based on reviews and it is the worst bbq I have ever had. The brisket was drowned in a horrible sauce and the meat itself so dry it was hard to chew. Only positive is that the onion rings was edible.

Haily is absolutely amazing with her service and demeanor!But.. The food is just okay, sandwiches are small'(er than expected - not 'country' generous) .

Not what it used to be. We waited about 30 minutes for our food, which is no big deal if it had been hot but it was cold. Nothing tasted good like it used to. Mac and cheese was as if it was taken straight out of the refrigerator.

I grew up in Owensboro, Kentucky, eating their food with my family. Although I have moved away, I bring my family back here to keep their tradition of excellence alive for generations to come.

I watched bbq pit masters before, and I was in this area for work. I was very excited to try award winning bbq. However, I was incredibly disappointed in what someone calls award winning bbq. The restaurant wasn't that busy and I walked to the take out area. The service was pleasant and I placed my order. I got 1/2 lb of brisket, 1/2 lb of ribs and a serving of baked beans, bbq sauce on the side. The brisket was decent, and tasted good. The ribs were charred and I noticed that the membrane was still on the ribs. Every bbq show I have seen always says remove the membrane. The ribs were very, very average. Really bummed about it. I should have got a larger portion of the baked beans. It was about, maybe, 2 ounces tops! Then they gave me about 8-10 ounces of bbq sauce. Way too much. The sauce was made with molasses, you could definitely taste that. It seemed a little watery to me. I had to laugh when I was leaving the sign says "five generations of bbq" the vans say " six generations of bbq" I guess the six generation is missing something that the fifth generation should have taught them. Will I go back, probably not...

Come here for "Down Home Kentucky Barbecue!" A 106 year old barbecue institution and one of the few places where you can enjoy barbecue mutton. And yes, you definitely want to try it! We ordered takeout today and took it to a local park to eat. But, there is plenty of seating inside the restaurant. You order your food at a counter right next to the covered steam table holding chopped mutton, barbecue chickens, baked beans, and barbecue pork ribs. All of those looked really good. We ordered several sandwiches (all with onions and pickles) and a few sides today. My favorite sandwiches, in order, were: 1. Sliced Pork (flavorful and a large portion) 2. Chopped Mutton (good texture and flavor) 3. BBQ Bologna (flavorful and moist) 4. Sliced Mutton (tasty, but much less meat than the pork sandwich) The chopped mutton is mixed with sauce and it works well on a sandwich. I can't see it working well on a plate with 2 sides. That's a better role for the sliced mutton. I bought a jar of "John's Sweet Heat Bar-B-Q Sauce" and it was delicious! The flavors were fantastic, with just a bit of heat, and it worked well on all of the sandwiches. The Sweet Heat Sauce is a must when you are here. The Cole slaw and the potato salad were both good, but not great. Sandwich sizes and individual sides are smaller than you'd expect, but the prices are fair. Staff are friendly and very helpful. I definitely recommend Old Hickory Bar-B-Q!

My favorite restaurant in Owensboro, bar none. BBQ is top notch. I love the chopped mutton myself. Also, try the cobbler. Hell, I'd suggest you try everything on the menu!!!
