The Voice Of Truth

Owner would always smoke 2 packs of cigarettes while baking the modified cheap bread. His workers would sweep cigs off the floor every morning before opening. Shows he really cares about the community feeding them shortcut ingredient cigarette bread.

As a regular and neighbor - they get the job done! Fresh coffee, neighborly service, fresh & homemade goodies. And a mom and pop vibe. Give it a try! Their sugar cookies were a hit at Christmas too!

The best family owned and operated bakery. My family has been coming here since I was a child. Whenever we come to Boston, we always stop in. Rita is the best!

I don't know what's up at A and L Bakery, the place seems very different, since they lost their baker, due to illness. I've always been suspect of A and L's Italian cookies, which A and L claims to bake, on-site, but, the cookies look very commercial. Recently, I stumbled upon Hoff's Bakery in Malden, and Hoff's (commercial grade) Tiramisu is a spitting image of A and L's Tiramisu. Now, I'm really suspect of baked goods that A and L claims to make/bake in their own bakery. I think A and L's Tiramisu comes from Hoff's (maybe A and L's cookies, too (or they come from some other commercial bakery)). Beware, there are baked items in A and L's display cases that are old, and have exceeded their "fresh" lifespan.

Not recommended. I stopped in recently because I was in the area on business and wanted a quick bite to eat. I was traveling on foot, and chanced upon A & L Bakery while walking to the place I originally had in mind to eat at. A & L Bakery seemed clean and well stocked from the outside, and looked like it might have some pizza, which I was in the mood for. I went in. I realized quickly that the impression I got from the street view wasn't quite accurate. While things looked clean, they looked old and tired. I noticed an abundance of Italian pastries in the cases, but had to wonder how fresh they were because, frankly, the place didn't seem to do a lot of business. I tried two slices of Sicilian pepperoni pizza, which was definitely an error in judgment. The trays of pizza looked like they'd been sitting out for several hours, so I asked the slices to be reheated. I was not expecting the cashier to nuke them in a microwave, which was an unpleasant surprise. As you might guess, the slices came out soggy and droopy. When I got back to where I was staying, I started to eat them but had to stop after a few minutes because of the grease and sogginess. The flavor actually wasn't bad, but I wasn't going to shove down lousy slices just for that. Don't bother with this one.

Sadly, we were disappointed by the sweets. The eclair pastry was stale, the filling wasn't sweet or yummy; and the brownie was boring and bland.
