I love going to restaurants where you order $60 worth of food and sit down at an empty table (after checking with the people in the cafe) just to have someone come and tell you “this is a restaurant table, please take your food and go to that side where there’s no tables available”.Keep in mind that it’s pouring rain outside so as we walk home, our food will get drenched and there’s no one waiting to sit on our table.South End Buttery has no idea what the service industry means and is an embarrassment for the way they treat people who have ordered sandwiches, pastries and drinks for a nice Friday lunchWould not recommend

Decent food, cozy and cute, but cramped dining room, hidden service fee on the billI've walked past the buttery numerous times and finally decided to grab dinner last week. The food was pretty good, I had a steak and it was cooked perfectly medium rare. It came with truffle fries that were a tad bit salty but overall pretty tasty. We had a friendly waitress so the service was pretty good, although it's a bit confusing finding how to enter into the restaurant portion and staff wasn't super helpful upstairs. I was seated in the downstairs dining area and it was beautifully decorated in a sort of cozy wood paneled aesthetic. The one thing I will say is that it was a bit cramped down there and a lot of the tables were right up on each other. This is totally forgivable though, I get it, there's not a ton of space in Boston. The one thing I will say that bothered me though was that there was a service fee added to my check without my knowledge. I was told it was for the cook staff and is not gratuity so I still tipped well. In my opinion this is bull, the restaurant owners should just pay all of their back of the house staff an appropriate amount and adjust menu prices accordingly. Don't sneak in a bogus fee and force that on the customer. Especially without making that clear. Overall not a bad spot but beware of the hidden fees.

I recently had breakfast at the South End Buttery in Boston, and I'd like to share my thoughts for those considering a visit. First and foremost, the venue itself is quite charming, situated in a lovely neighborhood that adds to its appeal. Upon our early morning arrival, we were greeted by a completely empty restaurant. Despite this, and not having a reservation, our request to be seated along the edge of the room was unfortunately not accommodated, and we found ourselves placed right in the center of the empty space downstairs. As for the food, I opted for the mushroom omelette. The dish was presented neatly, and while the ingredients were fresh, I found the overall size quite small for the price point. The flavors, though unique, didn't quite harmonize as well as I had hoped, leading to an overall okay but not memorable culinary experience. Also the cheese in my omelette wasn’t melted. On the note of value, I felt the pricing was a bit steep relative to the portion sizes and the culinary experience provided. To sum up, while the South End Buttery has its charms and the setting is undeniably pleasant, my visit left me feeling that there's room for improvement in terms of seating flexibility, portion sizes, and flavor combinations. It's a decent spot for those in the area who are looking for a quick bite in a nice environment, but manage your expectations regarding the culinary experience and pricing.

The bakery , sandwiches & coffee are top notch ! The staff is friendly and hard working . The outdoor dining during season is wonderful. My only suggestion is for the area where the trash , napkins etc are kept needs to be cleaned more often along wiping the tables down. Love to have the front cafe opened till 7

Our experience here was okay. We came for restaurant week but were told that the dinner deal was not available on a Saturday evening. Overall the food was tasty but for the price we were expecting better.

17$ for a turkey burger with no fries ? (Even though when you order on line it shows a picture of fries with it…)I live in the south end, the prices are high comparatively.

Very good food! Fresh and delicious. Waitress was extremely nice but overall service was very slow. The atmosphere was nice. Not much room between each customer and tables are small, that didn't bother us but I know some would not like it. Will definitely return!

I needed to feed 5 adults- 3 of whom are hard of hearing and one of whom is gluten free- on a Saturday. We have a budget and the seniors can't walk far or over wonky sidewalks. This place checked every box and the food was perfect!

I dined at the South End Buttery last night with my husband and was thoroughly impressed with the experience from start to finish. The ambiance was inviting and cozy, perfect for a fun evening out. Our waiter Richard was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable, providing excellent recommendations and ensuring that every aspect of our meal was enjoyable. As for the food, the Fish & Chips were delicious and cooked to perfection, as were the fries:) We both had margaritas that were perfect to enjoy with our meal! Will definitely go back soon!

Erratic service, excessive fees, food quality that has noticeably slipped (today, a stale blueberry muffin for about $6 all in, means it is my last visit). The only good news, you can walk right in - there are no longer the crowds that typified this once bustling establishment.

My boyfriend and I went for the first time last night and the food was so good! The portion size was just right. I also got their pineapple margarita which was delicious and our server was supper attentive. We dined in their downstairs room which had a really cute vibe to it. Will definitely be back for future date nights.
