Absolutely love the concept and execution of this place. Meals designed to share with friends and family. I brought my girlfriend here to meet my parents and it worked as a great bonding experience with passing the plates around and sharing everything. The fried chicken is to die for, absolutely love it.

I’ve been walking past Southern Proper for two years now and finally had a chance to go. My family was visiting from Alabama and this has to be the perfect spot for them, right?!? Wrong. Made reservations for a Friday night. Didn’t need them, they weren’t busy. And yet somehow, the waitress had a hard time getting to our table. Must have been really busy with all the empty tables. My sister and I shared the kale salad, Brussels sprouts, & deviled eggs. It was tasty but nothing to write home about. I was most looking forward to the buttermilk biscuits as they’re hard to find up here....but they were so salty!

TLDR: solid food in a beautiful interior. The inside certainly lives up to the name. Beautifully done with wood accents throughout and vintage looking lamps throughout Southern Proper has a gorgeous barn chic look to it. Food wise it has some classics like BBQ ribs and also fried chicken. There is an ample cocktail menu with your classics. Sides are full of Southern favorites like butter milk biscuits and collared greens. Sadly I only ate at this place on the night of its closing and it will sadly be no more.

Would've been a 4, but undercooked chicken (that was too visibly pink to be just blood) knocked it down to a 3 for me. Came here on Friday at 7:30 and it was really dead... We got the silver queen hushpuppies, pimento cheese, smoked pork shoulder, wedge fries, and 4pc hot. The hushpuppies and wedge fries were my least favorite dishes. The hushpuppies were dry and bland and the wedge fries were basic too potatoey. On the flip side the pimento cheese and pork shoulder alone was really good, enough so that it would make me wanna go back if not for the chicken... There's potential in the hot chicken, the spices were there but it's extremely unpleasant when you eat undercooked chicken. Kinda actually ruined my meal but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

This was our first time in Boston and trying this spot out and it is legit! I grew up in the south so I can say they have everything on point here! I would describe this place as a more upper class south comfort food dinning experience. The classic chicken is amazing and so is the corn bread! The chicken had me clearing the bone! Please please please put one in NY!

Had a reservation but still made to wait 15 minutes before we got seated. Very expensive for acceptable food EXCEPT the desserts!! I live for the desserts. The staff is really friendly, but I fear great service may not be able to save this place.

We stopped by for dinner on a Friday night. Restaurant was mostly empty around 6pm so we were promptly seated. The interior of this restaurant is very rustic, high ceilings and wooden features. There are quite a number of tables which is good for large groups. We ordered a variety of items including: Biscuits 4pc hot fried chicken 1/2 lb pulled pork Crispy Brussels Everything was surprisingly delicious! The biscuits were most and flaky. They're served with butter and a bomb blueberry sauce. The fried chicken was crispy and came in a dry rub style. The hot is spicy but not unbearable. The batter was slightly thicker than I preferred but it was still crunchy. The pulled pork was the star of the night. It was very moist and flavorful. We loved that it was served with sweet rolls and slaw. It's like BYO sliders! The crispy brussels were flavorful but too oily for my liking. Overall it was a good experience! Food was reasonable priced and portions were satisfactory.

I got the classic chicken half regular and half spicy and it was really good. The sweet sauce is delicious. It is a bit pricey for 4 pieces, maybe adding a one more piece will make up for the price. I would want to go again to try other dishes. Staff are amazing.

Having grown up in the south, I'm always dubious about northern places claiming good southern food and atmosphere. The interior is really cool and trendy with upside down table lamps as ceiling lights, but that's about where the magic ends. I know it's Boston, but the wait staff weren't really friendly or welcoming beyond the host and you can go to any Cracker Barrel to see Southern charm is not hard to come by. My companion and I ordered the smoked wings, shrimp and grits, collard greens, and Mac and cheese. The wings were the star of the show and I'd eat them again, absolutely. The shrimp and grits had the right taste and flavor profile, and while I've definitely paid $20+ for a bowl before, never for a bowl so small. Grits are cheap and there were 4 shrimp; this was a $12 bowl at most. The collards were really vinegary and could have used more pork, a little al dente, and I had to ask for hot sauce. The mac and cheese was a true disappointment. Way too salty, no texture other than feeling like eating a melted blob of Velveeta cheese. When asked if we wanted a to-go box, we declined and actually said it was just not palatable. The staffer graciously took it off the tab, but mac & cheese should be a fixture of a place calling themselves Southern Proper.

I recently enjoyed dinner here. Great space and a nice vibe. The fried chicken nad biscuits were delicious. The restaurant was crowded but not too noisy.

3.5 stars is about right. Ambiance is lovely and very curated. It's spacious, with unique prints/decor on the walls and ceiling, and has a bar with plenty of standing tables nearby. Drinks - Great mix of options! I chose a unique craft beer - a Guava Gose which I really enjoyed. Food - Hit or miss. The two hits of the night were the fried chicken and the pork ribs. Fried chicken was very crispy and seasoned on the outside and juicy on the inside. Definitely an adventure for your tastebuds. I was rather impressed with the pork ribs (something I'm rarely impressed by in Boston), they were smokey and smothered in flavorful sauce that permeated the whole rib. The pimento mac & cheese and fried okra left more to be wanted. Mac & cheese had a hint of sweetness, but overall cheese fell flat and had a sort of fake flavor to it. Fried okra looked promising, but it was chewy and hard to eat. Price - on the higher side.

i would have given this a much higher rating for the food, but some of the experience elements were lacking. we went for lunch on a saturday at 1 and there were tons of tables open but we were placed at a high top that was right in the sun. this became problematic pretty quickly since half the table couldn't see a thing, and the other half got overly warm with the sun on their backs. we asked the waitress if there were any options to adjust the shades and turned out this would be impossible. we started off with the biscuits which were delicious, we especially liked the maple butter and the jams they came with. i then ordered the kale quinoa salad, and a side of 2 eggs. i requested poached but it turned out the kitchen wouldn't be able to poach them. i thought this was really odd since the restaurant was practically empty and it would only take a little bit of simmered water to make this happen. the salad was good, but a bit heavily dressed. i thought the omelet was pretty good, and the cornbread side was decadent and buttery, but really delicious. the waitress didn't seem entirely thrilled with being there and serving us, but we tried to ignore it and just enjoy the food.

Honestly nothing to complain about at this adorable little southern restaurant. Interior was beautiful and atmosphere is so homey! You can see into the kitchen area and it looks literally like a Williams Sonoma store. Lets start with drinks and they are STRONG. Ordered Katies at the Club with vodka subbed for gin, and it was honestly a little hard to take down without extra soda added lol. But not complaining... Old fashioned made with Four Roses (they dont have Makers) was supposedly really good. We got a bunch of small dishes to share, and they were all amazing! Biscuits with butter and jam, hush puppies, pimiento mac and cheese (it was light on the pimiento but heavyyyy on the cheese sauce, yum!!!), potato wedges (too big and thick for my personal liking), fried chicken sandwich-hot (BEST fried chicken sandwich EVER!!! Sooo flavorful--the buttered bread was amazing, the chicken was juicy and flavorful!). Also they kindly gave us a complimentary corn bread for dessert because they had an extra (true southern hospitality!) It was mildly sweet with some yummy butter on top. All in all would definitely come back and 10/10 would recommend the fried hot chicken sandwich!
