The restaurant is 70 years old and they haven’t updated much with the interior but that’s why it’s so charming. If you need frills, this isn’t the place for you. For everyone else… run here. I think it's time this establishment received an updated review, considering the most recent one is from 2021. I have seen recent FB posts about how good the food here is. Glad to say...those posts are true! From the front, you'd think it's closed and has been closed for a while. How wrong you'd be. There is a long counter with stools and quite a few booths. The interior is stuck in time, which makes it appealing. There is no pretension here...just a place "where everybody knows your name". And know their names the staff does! In my just under an hour visit, most everyone that came in or left, called to the staff and they replied to that person by name. The food is the same you would have at home: fresh made, no frills. One warning: the breakfasts come with toast only. If you'd like to have home fries, you'll have to ask for them(at a nominal charge) as they are not included. I had a ham & cheese omelet with a side of bacon(crispy) and rye toast. Oh yes...and coffee. I neglected to order the home fries, but ordered some halfway through my breakfast. I had to wait a bit as there were other orders ahead of my re-order, which was fine. The potatoes, while not seasoned, were worth the wait. Coffee was refilled regularly. Soda Chef is worth finding and enjoying. Oh yes...cash only!

If you want a truly satisfying home cooked breakfast go to the Soda Chef on North Street in Pittsfield. It may not look like much from the outside, but this is an authentically retro old school diner with bar stools at the counter and also a few tables available for sitting at. All of the food is freshly prepared to order by George. The eggs were amazingly fresh and so tasty! Their home fries can be made with or without onions, as you prefer, and I opted for the onions. These were definitely the BEST home fries I've ever eaten at a restaurant. I also ordered bacon, which they cooked to order. Asking if I wanted it soft, medium, crispy or extra crispy. My husband had the sausage which was also delicious. Patty waited on us and she was so nice and really attentive to us. We haven't had a chance to have lunch there, but I have no doubt it will be just as satisfying!

Terrible environment, the place looks like it hasn't been cleaned in weeks. The staff was very rude about the cash only policy, even though they only mentioned it when I arrived in to pick up my order and pay with card. They told me to go walk to an ATM that was 10 minutes away. I had to call twice in order to even place my order. Will not order from here EVER again!!

We had breakfast here. It was fast and very good. The waitress was exceptional, very friendly. I will eat here again. It is basic breakfast fare, well worn booths and cash only- very reasonable prices. A great place.
