Wonderful “hidden” place. The staff was so kind and the menu is huge! Great value, low prices, and very fast service for a delicious sandwich. I was visiting Baltimore when I stopped by and truly wished I lived closer.

My first couple of forays out in Baltimore were misses! After reviewing YELP recs near my hotel for a quick lunch, I walked over to Cafe on the Square. There was nobody sitting inside, seemed like mostly take out, which was ok, although I had hoped to eat in, but certainly not a deal breaker! I arrived just after 11 and they said they were no longer serving breakfast, which was ok, but certainly not a deal breaker! The staff seemed really friendly. While I was trying to figure out what to order a lot of people were popping in from the medical center attached to pick up takeout. I ended up with a chicken and pasta salad displayed in the front case. I paid and headed back to my hotel to eat. It was just ok.

This is a phenomenal, hole-in-the-wall cafe that reminds me of New York! The owner is very friendly and has been here since 1992. The food is fresh, tasty, and the prices are very reasonable. We were shown excellent customer service and attention. I cannot recommend this place enough!Wheelchair accessibility: There's a ramp in front that goes up to the main door.

This place is excellent! I love exploring a new city and finding great food. You know you've found a good spot when a steady number of people come through the door, and the customers and owners know each other. Cafe on the Square is obviously a locals spot, which speaks to the quality of the food. I got a California Chicken Salad with a slice of sunflower seed bread, and it was fantastic! Make sure you ask for the homemade dressing; you won't regret it.

Don’t skip on this cafe on your stroll through the city. Placed on the corner, near where most students live, is this delicious cafe with the nicest group of employees. These sandwiches will definitely fill your stomach without denting your wallet

Really nice guy, was happy to accommodate gluten free, and it was one of the best lettuce wraps I've had!

Just stopped in for a quick bite and was greeted by the most welcoming owner. Service was super friendly and fast, and my sandwich was made quickly and perfectly. I got a tuna salad sandwich on the sunflower bread, with tomato, cucumber, lettuce, and sprouts. Everything was cut fresh and the tuna was so delish. I will be coming back next time I need a wholesome, delicious meal.

Very good sandwiches! The owner/cashier is extremely nice and clearly cares a lot about serving great food.

After all these years. Why COTS hasn't grown is beyond me, given they always have fresh, delicious food, and considering how super friendly and efficient the owner (John) and staff are. Definitely worth passing the chains.

I lived in Baltimore for 2 years (around 22 years ago!) and frequented this lunch spot when working at UMMS. My family was in Baltimore last week and we stopped by to grab sandwiches for the road (Cold Turkey and Powerhouse sandwiches). Everything was the same, in all the best ways. The great sandwich and salad options, friendly service from John, and I was stunned at how reasonable the prices remain. My 9 and 12 year olds loved their lunch and my husband's already talking about how we need to make another visit next time we're headed south. This is an easy spot to overlook, but should not be missed.

I had do e a lengthy review and lost it before finishing it.So the short version. The Crab/Shrimp Salad is unbelievable. Iam a seafood fein. And I've eaten many seafood salads, but have never eaten a salad such as this. The price I can't remember. If you try it you'll be hooked. If I can, today I will pleasure myself with another salad.Mr. John your Crab/Shrimp Salad is the best by far. How do you keep this a secret. I'll try my best to see it isn't a secret any more. Only secret is the Salad dressing you put on the salad.Thank you,Mr. Jimmy Shields ?
