I was very disappointed with my two experiences here. Coffee was average. Muffin and scone tender but tasteless. Very expensive for what you get. Also be aware that this is an Evangelical Christian cafe.Dietary restrictions: Dedicated Gluten free

Just another overpriced place selling mid grade food. If you want to spend $20 for a coffee and bacon egg and cheese this is the place for you. Then then ask for a tip?! Ha!

I went to roots because I needed a new cafe to go to since moving to the area, and heard they had a little library inside. However upon arriving, I soon found out all the books are religious material, which kinda gave me the ick. Moving on I tried their cupcakes and they were very stale, not good or worth the price at all. I also ordered a crepe, which was good, but the coffee just isn't that great.

I really want to like this place, because the people are nice, but there is not a single vegetarian salad on the menu, nor is there a vegetarian sandwich. You can "build your own," but when you come here to grab a quick lunch, that sort of defeats the purpose. I guess you COULD get the protein salad vegetarian, it just seems odd there's really nothing for us vegheads to eat. Room for improvement!

Five stars for ambiance, three for food. Very cozy and comfortable cafe with a good amount of seating. Definitely the kind of place you could bring a laptop and do some work or a book and do some reading. The food is just OK. I did enjoy my butternut squash soup but my sandwich (the cranberry chicken) was mediocre. The one leaf of lettuce was a little past its prime and the bread was very bland and vaguely reminiscent of cardboard. The coffee was pretty good. No complaints about service. I'd probably come back with a book and just grab a coffee and maybe give one of their pastries a try.

Roots is such a wonderful cafe, the staff is always friendly, and the food is always fresh and yummy! The whole menu is gluten-free and they only serve organic fair-trade tea and coffee - LOVE! There is plenty of seating inside and outside on their patio and deck, for bigger groups and if you want to get some work done. There is usually a small wait, especially around lunch time, but that just goes to show how loved they are by the community! My only wish is that they would switch over to compostable/paper packaging instead of the plastic. All in all, always recommend! :)**Note: The cafe was founded on Christian ideals and they do have bibles in a small corner, BUT they are very welcoming to all and I would not say their religion makes it an uncomfortable atmosphere, as mentioned in other reviews. They have other books too, not just bibles!Dietary restrictions: The entire menu is gluten-free, and they offer dairy-free options as well.

We loveeee roots cafe. My brother and I come here every time I visit home and talk for hours, the food is good (specifically the bagels and quiches) and they have great options for peeps who will never be grown enough to drink coffee (my brother). Love love love.

We were in Portland for NYE weekend and I wanted to stop somewhere for the restroom and a tea. I just happened to pick this place due to proximity and was so pleasantly surprised to learn about it's Christ-centered mission! There's a beautiful message in the restroom stall encouraging you to love others and a great selection of Christian books in the lobby. The tea and cupcake I got were both delicious. It was a beautiful cafe that we will certainly stop by again next time we're in Portland!

Went here on whim while in area after hearing from others that it was good. Upon first glance the stand alone building is new and medium to small sized, a few tables outside with umbrellas in warmer months and it was all very clean. Upon first walking in you are surprised by a bookstore like front section adjacent the line area to order. We were initially psyched since we love books to browse, but found out it is all Christian book store related content. This may be a great plus for some, but possibly a negative for others with other religious beliefs. Service was friendly, a bit slow to order even at a less busy time of day. They have many baked goods and menu of salads and sandwiches, as well as some higher-end bottled beverages, smoothies, coffee and tea. We ordered baked goods, I think it was a blueberry scone and muffin and also a latte. Scone was super sweet, like flavoring was dumped into it and quite dry. Coffee was OK. All in all a bit standard and underwhelming considering the buzz and price points. Glancing at the menu with many options, we were tempted to get a sandwich or avocado toast, more coffee, etc but ended up splitting what we ordered since the prices were a bit high for us to eat an entire meal for 2.
