I love it when we try a restaurant for the first time and it exceeds my expectations. It’s rare, but that happened tonight and it was so GREAT! A stylist at Great Clips told me to try Jay’s Smokin’ Barbeque in Fargo, so we went there for supper. (Note: Here on the edge of wind-swept prairie, we call the evening meal “supper.”) The Fargo location is not fancy and they were understaffed, owing to a family medical emergency that had them closed most of the week according to a sign on the front door. There were two servers and both were scrambling, but we waited only a few minutes to be seated. Our friendly server confirmed that the ribs were on the smoker, and I ordered the Lean Brisket, Baby Back Ribs, Baked Beans and Mac & Cheese. Deb ordered the Brisket French Dip sandwich. My brisket and ribs were terrific – best I’ve had since we were in Charleston, SC over 30 years ago and discovered Bone Suckin’ Sauce! My brisket was hot, tender and juicy, with a wonderful bark. And the ribs were perfect – great bite and chew, with just the right tug off the bone, moist and meaty and…gosh they were SO good. The baked beans were also delicious, and the mac & cheese was creamy and fresh (not from any microwave). Deb loved the soft, warm hoagie roll wrapped around her fresh-sliced brisket and provolone, and the au jus dip was hot and full of flavor. Deb also had the cole slaw; simple, fresh and tasty. Add a glass of water and an ice tea, and our check came to just over $35. We will definitely be regulars and hurry back whenever our mouths are watering for barbeque. You’ve really got to try it!

This location isn't as good as the other for a few reasons. Portions were smaller, ribs ONLY on Friday, lack of a server, and inattentive cashier. Asked for my bin, didn't get it, asked for sweet potato fries and didn't get it, asked for ketchup and didn't get it, asked for water and realized once I got to the table she didn't say anything about it to find out there's cups by the pop machine. Other location is a solid 5 stars, this one needs work..

Went to check out new Moorhead location. Very awkward and confusing. No signs indicating where to go or sit or anything that even mentions "Jay's bbq" nobody greets you, no menus. It's literally just a bar. We stood around awkwardly for about 5min and then just left.

J smoking barbecue has to be the best barbecue restaurant in town! I always come in I'm hungry as a bear and leave a satisfied plump full! With great food you also get awesome customer service, the staff there are the best!

I went here for dinner with my family over the weekend. The staff was very friendly, and the place was kept very clean. I got bbq ribs and a pulled turkey sandwich. The ribs were good, though not as fall off the bone as I would have liked. The pulled turkey sandwich was awesome, though, and I got a fair amount of turkey, but I would have appreciated a second bun. The fries were great as well. The real highlight for me was the Carolina Gold BBQ sauce. It tasted brand new to me, but was the perfect complement to my meal, and may be a new favorite sauce of mine. Finally, for the type of food, the pricing was right in line with what you'd expect to pay. Would go again.

Not a first date place, as it looks a bit thrown together. Menus are photo copies, not real clean looking, and don't list appetizers. Service was pretty underwhelming, but I'm sure they're just having a hard time getting staff and are a bit overwhelmed. Ordered brisket plate "lean". Tasty brisket, and liked that they cut the fat off. I ordered chopped, but got sliced (no big deal). Included 2 sides and a tiny bun for about $15. Potato salad was good, Mac and cheese wasn't anything special. It was a good amount of food, and I left full. There's no ambiance, and service was mediocre, but food was good. Seems like a good place for carry out.

I called a head of time to put in an order, due to not having a lot of time to eat my lunch. Once I got there people who had just placed an order got theirs before mine. What’s the point of calling ahead if they are just going to wait and make your food once you get there?

What an awesome boxed lunch you made up for us at work. Everybody raved about the wonderful brisket and your famous mac and cheese! Thank you for your wonderful service and yummy food!

Ordered 3 whole Briskets and Mac and cheese the day before for Grad party. Reheated low and slow and still absolutely amazing. The food was an absolute hit with all the guests. Amazing flavor and service.

Pork tacos with green chili aioli and pico are awesome! Decent price for two tacos and pretty filling. Just the right bit or heat. Came with tortilla chips but I don't eat tortilla chips without salsa so I threw them away.
