I am a vegan with Celiac disease, so finding a place where I can get a good treat from a safe environment is a challenge. Last year, I discovered Hold the Wheat by accident when I had an appointment in the area. I was so excited to find my kind of food, I went a little crazy and bought anything vegan that I could find (everything is gluten free). My favorite item was the vegan Mixed Berry Sweetie Pie, which comes with a strawberry filling. They don't always have the vegan berry pie in stock, so one day I tried the regular mixed berry pie (it was worth the risk) and fell in love with it. The mixed berry pies had much more flavor to them than the strawberry pies (in my opinion), so finally I asked if they could make me a batch of vegan mixed berry pies, and they were more than happy to accommodate my request. Today I picked up a dozen vegan mixed berry pies, and with great willpower, there are still some left. Maybe they will become a regular item on the menu???Dietary restrictions: 100% gluten free, with some vegan options.

Sending many many many many awesome thanks from Winnipeg, Manitoba! Stopped in yesterday morning on our way back home after countless people in my Celiac Travel group on FB recommended this spot. I had this amazing snuggle pie which was like what I remember as kinda a pig in a blanket - Flaky, buttery pastry like with sausage and cheese. Oh wow I wish I bought a few to take with me. Grabbed a cinnamon coffee cake and 3 small cakes - the Caramel has already disappeared. 100% will make this a stop again whenever we go through Minneapolis. Thank you for such delectable scrumptiousness!! <3

I love this place! I live right by it so I obviously go all the time and all the staff are so nice! They are so friendly and always greet me kindly when I walk in. It's so fun when they have new/seasonal flavors of spencer cakes. Everything is delicious and I guarantee that whatever they have left when you get there will be fantastic! The hot chai latte is definitely my favorite drink there, highly recommend it if you stop by!

If I told you an apple sweetie pie changed my life you wouldn't believe me so now you have to read my story.I'm used to getting gas station donuts. To me, grocery store bakery items are the fancy choice. Then, one fateful day I walked into "Hold the Wheat" and like a unrefined street urchin I asked for an "apple fritter." Spencer looked at the shelf and handed me what I thought was their version of an apple fritter. One bite into it I knew I had discovered something special. Flakey pastry, with a gooey, sweet center. Every time I chewed there was more crunch on my palate. I had to stop what I was doing and concentrate on what was happening in my mouth. I finally figured out it was the course grained sugar that was giving it the crunch.I told myself I would write a witty review for them but I procrastinated until I forgot about it. A couple weeks later, I drove by the shop and noticed it's name. "Hold the Wheat?" Hold on, it's also gluten free!? Mind. Blown. It never even occurred to me that what I was eating didn't contain gluten. My wife has a gluten intolerance and I knew I had to let her try it. Well, here I am. She just told me, "It's like heaven on earth."We tried the apple sweetie pie, caramel Spencer cake and a lemon bar. All of them were fantastic.Even the coffee was fantastic.I'll never be able to enjoy another apple fritter knowing that I could be eating an apple sweetie pie.Dietary restrictions: Gluten free

My new favorite bakery to visit in the Twin Cities! I came in on a Wednesday morning in February and was greeted right away when walking in the door. The service was superb & although there was a line I did not wait more than a couple minutes. The bakery is absolutely beautiful inside, nicely lit & nice interior- perfect photo op for any of you foodies out there as well. The seating inside is very limited though- only 3 small tables. There is no parking lot but street parking was very easy to find. Now let's get to the baked goods-YUM!!!!! You would never guess everything is gluten free! I ordered sugar cookies and the salted caramel apple pie and they were delicious! I will definitely be coming back to try some of their more savory items on the menu. Highly recommend this bakery.

This gem is absolute heaven even if you can eat gluten. If you have Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, Hold the Wheat is a miracle. The goodies are SO good my gluten-eating husband will go out of his way to go there and get things for himself too. There is handy street parking and a small lot tucked away as well. They have great savory options as well as out of this world pastry. If you are looking for a perfect cold weather/comfort food lunch and they have the chicken pot pie, get that! :) (It isn't on the recommendation list so I am recommending it here. You can't go wrong regardless.)Vegetarian options: Best to check the website or the facebook page.Dietary restrictions: Dedicated gluten free with Monin syrups for coffees, frequent vegetarian, dairy-free, or vegan options. Best to check the website or the facebook page.
