I lived in Germany for 2 1/2 years, so my expectations are pretty high. They were met and exceeded. Helmut the owner gave me the full tour and Lori was sure to keep my stein full of authentic German Hofbrau lager. The place was very welcoming and everyone was just like family. I had the Wiener Schnitzel and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. Very creamy and buttery. The cabbage (rot kohl) was sweet and tangy, everything was very good. A basket of bread was presented with butter to smear on top. I highly recommend this place. Food, friends, and authentic German Gemutlichkeit.

Food was excellent, service very good. Kitchen a little slow at getting the food out but it was worth the wait.

Helmut Steiner waited on us throughout the evening, which was a treat. We spend a weekend near Jefferson City once a year or so & always eat our special dinner at the Steinhaus. The food was delicious! Wish I could bring my parents here. The German songs playing in the background plus all the paintings & decor remind me of the years I spent living in Germany.

My fiance and I went here on a whim while we were in Jeff City and I am so glad we did!!! The food was amazing but the owner made the night even more special! He greeted us, recommended and poured our wine! He informed us that they were celebrating 43 years of business and we had great conversation with him and he frequently checked back!! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would! We will definitely be going back!

The owner and staff were excellent. We stayed after dinner and did karaoke. They really made us feel like family. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a true German experience. Loved it.

We went here for my wife’s birthday. We had been here before but it had been years ago. It took awhile to get the food because it was made specifically for you. This was fine. Overall the food was good. I especially liked the way they cooked the cabbage. The one issue we had was with the salad dressing. It was a homemade house salad dressing. It was extremely thin and milky. The problem was that my wife is lactose intolerant and we think the dressing contained a lot of milk. We got home and she was sick for quite awhile. The atmosphere also was not the best. It was dated and extremely dark in there. It made it hard to read the menu.

What a wonderful find, what a gem for Jefferson City and this part of Missouri. Who knew we'd find authentic German food in Jefferson City? OMGoodness this was a treat. We came to Jefferson City for the first time just for one night for a pair of sporting events. It's always a goal and often a challenge to find "best food near me" when traveling about parts unknown. We searched numerous foodie and travel sites and Das Steinhaus kept coming up with high ratings. I called and they couldn't have been more accommodating for our anticipated late arrival. The lounge adjacent stays open late (Karaoke was not too loud and slightly, pleasantly diverting), but the kitchen does close after usual dinner time. Helmut and his crew are lovely and welcoming. We were a group of 3 and enjoyed Wiener Schnitzel, Beef Rouladen, and Bratwurst. Hoffbrau on tap was perfect. (If you like beer in your beer, you know what I mean.) All came with salad (shout out for Helmut's delicious house dressing) and red cabbage, kraut, applesauce, potatoes. Portions were generous and the potatoes went unfinished. Sadly, no way to take leftovers as we're traveling. The red cabbage was outstanding with a scrumptious spicy hint, cinnamon/ginger I think. Same with the Rouladen gravy (think sauerbraten or pot roast but rolled with a spicy, tangy beef gravy). Ambiance in the dining room is cozy and warm. Felt very much like a small, friendly dining space in Germany (or Austria or Czech Republic). Definitely make Das Steinhaus a destination for supper if you are traveling to or through Jefferson City.

Stopped here while traveling , food was pretty good decor seemed a little dated and could use some updating. It was a little loud because the restaurant and bar/karaoke/dance hall, kind of flowed over into the main restaurant area.

The food is wonderful, authentic German dishes and for that alone I cannot wait to go back. The staff was amazing and friendly. Absolutely did an amazing job. When I went only the Lounge area was open and it's dated with odd lighting and cosmetic damage to walls, tables, seats, etc. Like a 1980 basement.

What an amazing, absolutely DELICIOUS gem in Jefferson City! The food is phenomenal (as avid German food enthusiasts with Serbian heritage, we like to think we know what we're talking about ;) but it's the atmosphere, people, and overall experience that truly make this place special. Helmut, the owner, is incredibly charismatic and truly loves this place, the food, and the people who come to share it with him, as he treats you like family.Having been to Berlin, where Helmut is from, I can also say it's such an authentic German experience - down to the incredibly generous portions (you're going home with leftovers, accept and luxuriate in the knowledge of a second stellar future meal) and the complementary (and delicious!) after dinner apertif that Helmut brings out and drinks with you, all topped with a toast!
