Can't say enough about our date night experience here. We sat on the rooftop, and as the sun went down our server told us the story of a Latin ballad, the inspiration for the drink I ordered. It was all wonderful and memorable. Absolutely delicious food and drink. Amazing staff.

Honestly, this place is an easy yes. It is THE BEST. All local foods curated into a home cooked meal that truly is something to be desired. Their meals are casual & comfortable while elevated and prepared with care. From the farm fresh micro greens to the French press coffee, black sheep is a dinner you will be proud you partook on.

As Volker residents, my husband and I walk everywhere we can. Through the the the three incarnations of this location, Black Sheep is our favorite. Reasonably priced and excellent Farm to Fork fare is the restaurant's forte and the reason for our twice or thrice weekly visits. Plus an excellent staff. Easily our favorite dining out spot. Note to fans of mussels, WOW, WOW, WOW. The recent closure of restaurants in Kansas City has raised the stature of Black Sheep even higher for us. Wish there was a method to add a star. The commitment of ownership, management and staff to a community kitchen shows a concern and sense of caring not often found in the cut throat world of urban restaurants. We eagerly await the reopening of Black Sheep in this new reality. We saw first hand the precautions taken during the take away phase of operations and this is one place I will feel safe when venturing out. Thank you, BS for being the type of valuable and compassionate neighbor that adds such value to our wonderful Volker community. Really, really waiting for Sunday brunch.

COVID-19 Review: As if I didn't already love Black Sheep before...The dining room feels warm and cozy with all the plants and woodwork, but there is also a rooftop patio to soak up the warm evenings in the spring, summer, and fall. I've always enjoyed the service and conversation with our servers. The farm to table food is like comfort food but more sophisticated and doesn't feel bad or heavy. It fills you up but you still feel good about eating it. After only two weeks of the stay-at-home order, Black Sheep decided to shake things up. Instead of offering their typical menu for pickup and delivery, they decided to meet the community where it was at and focus on feeding people in need with a "Pay What You Can" model. They offer soup and sandwiches for lunch and dinner, in addition to a rotating Blue Plate Special for dinner. I really admire restaurants that instead of getting frustrated that they couldn't continue their business the way they had designed it, asked the hard question of "What does our community need right now?" and then find a way to meet that need. Last night we had tacos and they were delicious! A seasoned pulled pork with a light and sweet slaw of veggies and pineapple. It was a generous serving of four big tacos. I ate three and will be making a taco omelet for brunch this morning. Black Sheep is the greatest!

Visited this place as a double date with some friends on a Friday night. It is very neat looking on the inside with neat art pieces and greenery all on the walls. They have some delicious dessert options listed on their menu wall. We loved that they offered breakfast even though we were dining late. Overall, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was nice.

Who doesn't a love a great farm-to-table restaurant, especially when you live in the heart of a big city?? Black Sheep filled my need for fresh, local dishes. I've been here a few times now and I've enjoyed everything I've gotten. The burger was really yummy (I recommend getting the double patty) with local beef. Even the sauces here are homemade ( green goddess / ranch dressing was AMAZING). I've also gotten the Rueben sandwich with housemade chips which, again, I would highly recommend. The chips were a bit on the oily/ too crispy side for my taste but the Rueben itself was hearty and delicious. The sauerkraut is what made the sandwich ( had the perfect amount of tartness). If you're looking for a cute, local spot to check out, give Black Sheep a try!

I've had dinner here once, and met for drinks another night. I love their atmosphere and the customer service is always great. DELICIOUS food that I would recommend to anyone looking for a unique dining experience with a feeling of old school charm.

This place is cool! Any meat dish here has tonnes of flavor. They even have home made fries and ketchup.

The atmosphere is cozy, the staff friendly and the food was simply awesome. One of the best brunch meals I have had in a very long time. I highly recommend this to anyone in the Westport area. It is my new destination restaurant

Came here for dinner one evening and they allowed you to choose where to sit. The building has much more seating than you would expect. There are two additional areas that are off to each side of the main area of the restaurant. They have many different options. They serve breakfast all day. There are burgers, steaks, pot roasts, etc. I settled for the black sheep burger, which was a standard burger with aioli and a side of fries. The quality of the meat was exquisite. Tasted farm fresh! The fries were crispy and had a little more salt than I normally like, but they were still great. The service was fine. Nothing spectacular. Took quite a while to get the check once we were ready. Next time I think I will be trying their breakfast. Looking at other patrons plates made me want to try the seasonal pumpkin pancakes!

If you're a localvore, this is the place for you. As far as I can tell, it's never been hugely crowded and there has almost never been a wait. They work with a truly large list of local farmers and producers here in the Kansas City area. Good food, incredible atmosphere, and there is a rooftop patio that you won't want to miss come spring.

I was looking forward to eat at this place after I saw a magazine post. I skipped breakfast to have lunch at this restaurant. The place is really cute. Staff is very friendly. The chicken and biscuit was recommended so that's what I ordered. The plate looked delicious. However, it was disappointing as it lack flavor. It was surprisingly bland. I pour lots of salt and pepper. My friend said the homemade ketchup also lacked flavor. She had a club sandwich so you can't mess that up. Another friend ordered a steak and eggs. She said the steak was cold. Not sure if I'll try again.

Black Sheep is one of those places I really want to love. I've been here 5-6 times now and each time has fallen short of success. The atmosphere here is great and the location is amazing, but the food and service are what has been bringing this down for me. On my first visit I ordered one of their "build your own" sandwiches and we had a plate of fried green tomatoes for the table. The tomatoes were amazing, my sandwich was...absolutely forgettable. It lacked seasoning. Looked like it had been thrown together with absolutely no concern whatsoever and I didn't eat most of it. My second visit, I ordered the daily vegan option (which is a great idea by the way!!) and this too had absolutely no flavor, which is something very important when preparing vegan food. I even commented to the person I was dining with that I was really disappointed. The third visit, I came with a friend and ordered the Farmer's Salad. Maybe I'm expecting to much from a salad, but this it was a huge salad with absolutely massive croutons and vegetables. It seemed like an afterthought. The dressing was decent, but overall the presentation was just...lacking. I don't really recall the next two visits, but they were definitely not memorable. This last visit (a few months ago) was terrible. I actually haven't been back since. My mother and I stopped in for lunch during a week day. It was absolutely not busy. The service was appalling. We sat in the window on the bar side, another woman behind was seated by herself in the window as well. We got water, and then...nothing. Almost twenty minutes went by and no one came by to check on us or take our order. The woman behind us walked to the back and asked to order and the server came out several minutes later. She apologized and said they were short staffed (but I will reiterate that the dining room was not full or busy). We all ordered around the same time, but it took over an hour to get our food. The lady behind us actually asked to have hers boxed up because she couldn't even eat it there. Everyone was given the wrong orders (we switched them) and once we had our food, we were never checked on again until we asked for our checks. The checks were for the wrong tables, so we had to wait while that was taken care of as well. I don't like writing reviews about service. I was a server for many years in college and even after. I know what it's like to have a bad day and have to still put on a face and provide service for people. I know how badly it sucks to be in the weeds and down people. This was bad though. I kept making excuses to my mother like "Maybe they are having issues in the back we don't know about..." and "They could be really busy on the roof? (It was rainy)." Overall, I would go back here if someone really wanted to try it, but as far as visiting on my own initiative I don't think I will.

Cozy feel, homey vibes and caring people. Great place to grab a bite alone or with friends. I'd highly recommend it but make sure you come ready to eat. Fair prices with great portions. ???

So I will admit we are fans of Chef Faust! He brings wonderfully delicious food to life with his farm to table methods. We finally stopped in for breakfast a couple of weeks back on a Saturday and wondered why we had waited so long to make it here! We had the Chicken & A Biscuit, Seasonal Pancake, and the Breakfast Burrito. The chicken in the CAB was well seasoned and moist and the biscuit was nice and fluffy! Will def have that one again. The Burrito is a nice size and very filling with the egg, sausage and fresh veggies! We will be back to continue to work our way through the menu.
