I moved to Charlotte in 2005 and I Loved Mert's it became one of the spots I would always take my visitors to. Not so much anymore. The cooks have changed as have the recipes. The Salmon cakes taste mike Salmon Mush. The fried chicken is simply chicken coated in flour and fried. The greens are about the only thing that hasn't changed. My last visit on Friday April 19, 2024 was my last visit.

If I could give a thousand stars for service, I would. Our waiter was amazing and one of the nicest people I've ever met. The food was amazing! We're visiting from Oklahoma and will be stopping by again before we leave!!!!

Mert's is a long time Charlotte soul food spot. This was my first visit to the city and restaurant. I wish I could say I was impressed by the food. The service was good, but the yams were burnt, macaroni was mushy, and the blackened salmon was salty. It's possible that I just caught them on a bad day, but I was not impressed at all. 3 stars is being a little generous actually.

Mert's was packed when we went there, as was to be expected when there was a huge conference in town. They were worth the wait! The food was great and the service was spectacular! Our server, DeAndre, was so friendly and attentive. He has a huge personality and is a real credit to the restaurant. The only thing we didn't care for was their process when waiting for a table. They should have buzzers or take your phone number. Unfortunately, you have to sit outside in the order you arrived and keep moving up until it's your turn. Amazingly, the hostess kept up with everyone, but it could be an easier process. However, this will not stop us from going back! Next time we're in the Queen City, we will be at Mert's!

Great southern comfort food! Staff was very personable & understood our urgency for the concert across the street.

So we went here because the soul food place we wanted to go to is closed on Mondays. I'll start with the soul rolls, they were OK but all I tasted were the black eyed peas, they didn't have any chicken in them. The turn off was honey mustard drizzled on top! It just threw the whole "soul" thought out the door! We ordered the red beans and rice, shrimp creole, fried chicken w greens and mac. The rice in both dishes was not cooked! I was biting on kernels of rice straight out the bag. The flavor was good but I like my rice cooked! We told the waitress about the rice & she asked if I wanted something different because they were not making anymore rice that day!? I ordered the shrimp and grits. While I waited, I tasted the chicken, mac, and greens. The chicken had zero seasoning and was not fried in flour or anything to make it crispy. The mac tasted good, but was thick as if it had been sitting there or left in the oven too long, the greens were topped with chuncks of onion and tomatoes, which was weird and didn't have any flavor! Once I got my shrimp and grits, I wasn't sure they brought me the right dish! It was covered in brown gravy. Now, the gravy was very tasty but never had grits like that. The grits were not cooked, they were gritty and I could taste the grains. We didn't finish anything were ordered, it was just all bad. The waitress did give us a percentage off our food, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, that was a one and done. The food was that bad, we won't be giving them a second chance. Maybe we went on a bad day and others will have better luck. Just not what I expect when I go to a "Soul Food" Restaurant.

Wow. That was amazing. Great food, great service and great atmosphere. I had the pulled pork, Mac and cheese and collards. Can't wait to go back next time I'm down this way. And yes, I'm the guy that found your employee's keys!

I ordered Catfish, Grits and Greens. The catfish meat disintegrated in my mouth and the greens where crunchy and not due to the onions or tomatoes. I really wanted to like this place as it was recommended and it was our last day in Charlotte but would not return.
