Nice local spot. Awesome bar service. Definitely would go back. You can eat inside or outside in the alley, which is a neat atmosphere.

Stopped here with my wife for dinner while driving through the area, and glad we did. Ambience is quaint and outdoor seating is available. Service is excellent - we were pleasantly greeted/taken to our table and then again by our server, Lynda, a pro if we ever met one. With her input, I settled on something I don’t usually order, the pork chop on a bed of risotto with spinach on the side; my wife ordered the Shrimp Creole. Both meals were outstanding. I ordered a locally made (as in, right down the street) Ghost Harbor Blonde Ale - cold quite refreshing, perfect for a hot day. We aim to return!

Linda - the patient, funny, Waitress who seemed to enjoy our party of six. She was attentive, kind, helpful and respectful. Fried Green Tomatoes Appetizer - oooh-la-la! Biscuits w/Apple Butter - light & sweet Chicken & Tomato Jam Pasta - tender chicken, and a slight sweetness to the creamy sauce - delicious!

Driving from Raleigh to Virginia Beach we decided to stop in Elizabeth City and found this little place. This was surprisingly cozy and quaint. We ordered Catfish fries, Beat salad with chicken/goat cheese with jam on toasted sliced baguettes, Blue crab sandwich with sweet potatoes, and Crawfish with rice. All were great!!

This. Y favorite place to eat in Elizabeth City, NC. Best burgers in town and the bartenders are amazing!

AMAZING is just one word to describe the food. From the catfish fingers, egg rolls, Carolina Caviar, Burgers and the shrimp and grits (best I’ve EVER had) can’t wait to come back. Great portions, prices, atmosphere and food. ????

My family and I spent a few nights in Elizabeth City, NC before heading for a week at the Outer Banks on a large family vacation. My favorite meal of the entire trip was courtesy of Hoppin' Johnz, our first night in Elizabeth City. This restaurant was just a few blocks from our rental home in downtown Elizabeth City. We arrived just before their dinner rush on a Friday evening and were immediately seated at a high top near the bar. Soon after the host was letting other parties know that it was going to be a 30-40 minute wait for a table. To start we ordered the fried green tomatoes ($12). The server kindly let us know that the serving size was 3 and offered that we could add another to our order so each member of our family could have their own. There was no way my son was going to try these, so we just stuck with the standard order. Hoppin' Johnz is self-described as new south cuisine, and I think that description fits it well. These tomatoes were fried in cornmeal and topped with country ham, pimento cheese, and pepper jelly. I have never seen fried green tomatoes presented this way, but they were extremely good! For dinner, I had the heritage farms pork barbecue topped with new south slaw and eastern NC barbecue sauce ($11 with choice of side). The pork was full of a nice smokey flavor, while the new south slaw had a welcome addition of sweet peppers that really made it stand out. On the side, I enjoyed the Brussels sprout slaw which was mostly sweet in flavor thanks to the dried cranberry addition. It was a great meal and a ton of food for the price tag! My wife enjoyed the classic Chesapeake crab cake sandwich, which is a blue crab cake, that was topped with lettuce, tomato, and remoulade ($14 with choice of side). She commented that the crab cake was one of the best she had. And she also enjoyed the side of sweet potato fries dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with apple butter. The restaurant is totally kid-friendly. I can't remember exactly what our's had, but I think there was at least pasta and a burger on the menu. That's what I remember my kids enjoying anyway. Overall this is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner and has to be among the best in Elizabeth City.

Can I add more stars?!? This place was a highlight of our trip. The food, the drinks, the service, the ambiance... all of it was superb. I wish we lived closer so I could go back today!

Not a positive experience - not everything on the menu was available, slow service, we had an overdone burger and a raw crab cake. Biscuits tasted like a fast food version, fries were over seasoned & very salty, desserts tasted pre-made. We won't be going back anytime soon.

First time to this quaint restaurant by the waterfront in Elizabeth City. Had the crab cake sandwich that was to die for! Succulent and reminiscent to my years living in the Chesapeake! We also had the egg rolls as an appetizer! Will be back again!

Loved this place, my wife and I went here after having a drink at Ghost Harbor. Drinks are reasonably priced along with the food. Food came out in a timely manner, and was cooked perfectly, can not wait to come back again.

It was our first time and I was really disappointed. My husband and I went for a lunch date and the service was average at best, the specials weren't accurate so when my husband ordered the Tuna we were made aware it was after 5 only and that it should have reflected that on the specials but didn't, when my husband ordered his second choice the server told him it wasn't good and to pick something else, tap beer tasted stale, food was mediocre, air conditioner was leaking on our table and food. The nicest thing there was the women's bathroom which was thoughtful and had accommodations for just about any woman problem out there. Either the prices need to come down or the quality needs to improve.

Amazing chicken salad. The service was fast and so great! My party had an amazing time and said this was the best food they had in Elizabeth City. The sweet potato fries are AMAZING. Please get it. It's not a savory sweet potato, it's sweet and comes with an apple sauce kind of dip. Goes perfectly with the Sammies.

Love love love Hoppin' Johnz - but please do something about the most unfriendly hostess I've encountered. This is the face of your business. Servers have always been friendly and professional. Never have had a bad meal.
