If I could give more than 5 stars I would. We were lucky enough to dine at Chef Vivian Howard’s chef table. The entire experience was magical and the best overall dining experience we’ve ever had. The dishes were all unique and fabulously executed. Her passion for what she does is infectious during the time with her. Thank you for such a wonderful time.

Interesting how a business that permanently closed a year ago is still getting 5* reviews.

Merle Haggard sang, “ARE THE GOOD TIMES REALLY OVER FOR GOOD.”Songs, like restaurants, become hits but they never stay there. You achieved what you set out to accomplish. Relish in the good times and accept your legacy. For a while you put Kinston, and North Carolina on a brighter map. It doesn’t matter the multiple sequences of events which caused the doors to close, you will someday relish in the good times you missed on the way up. You accomplished something no one else in Kinston had done. You brought people in from far and wide and they left eager to tell their friends and families far and wide where they dined last night. I ran a military Officer’s club in Europe. So I had some experience with the business of food service. “You’re only as good as your last meal.” That was our challenge like yours was. On my last of many visits to your restaurant, my instincts sensed vulnerability in the kitchen and on the floor. But Vivian, walk tall, ride high in the saddle, you accomplished something that in the beginning, folks bet it would never get off the ground. Like a failed marriage, occupational set backs, or anything where loss was suffered, only time heals. But that time creates lasting memories. Remember, joy and pain lingers in our life long after we’ve experienced it. Godspeed...

We visited Chef and Farmer last summer and found it to be an incredible experience. The ambience is elegant but relaxed. The food is magic - masterfully prepared and served. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and ready to make you feel welcomed and happy to be there. Unfortunately, it looks like they will be closed for an extended time while they revamp and redesign, according to their website. They are hoping to re-open in late 2023. I really hope they do!

From the moment you walk in, the staff is totally on point with a smile, greeting, and welcoming you to an exquisite dining experience. The wait staff was courteous and knowledgable about every dish, making every moment an enjoyable evening. We drove south from there straight to Hardy and Hot, Vivian's biscuit shop in Charleston, and again enjoyed wonderful Southern Fare for breakfast the next morning. Hope to dine at Lenoir, the new restaurant on a return to Charleston later this year.

I visited the Chef and the Farmer with a group and it was certainly a pleasant experience. They were most accommodating to us and were very helpful with the pre-order arrangements. The food was delicious.

Oh my goodness! What a delight to eat at Vivian Howard's restaurant. It surpassed our expectations by a mile! The ambiance, presentations, flavors, variety and service was excellent (Susan snd others)! We were not sure about some of the reviews we read and almost cancelled our reservation but are so glad we went anyway! My partner said the pork chop was the best he had ever eaten. He also raved about the basil infused gimlet. I found the Miso gingered collard greens and the marinated cucumber noodles to be the highlight of the meal. I also LOVED the strawberry salad which had an amazing strawberry dressing. The 10 layer chocolate cake with vanilla chantilly cream was spectacular. Im not a fan of caramel but the rest of the dish was so good I would order it again. We shared the cake and are glad we did because there was plenty to satisfy. We are looking forward to our next visit already as we live in upstate NY and only get this far south occasionally .

The restaurant gets how to restaurant. Everything about my experience here; from service to food was beyond expectations. The menu is kept simple to survey the right ingredients to the right taste profiles. I was thrilled with the custom cocktail menu. My choice was the cherry old fashioned. I had the lasagna as my entree and loved every bite. They allow for plenty of time to eat and socialize despite being quite busy. The space upstairs can get a bit noisy when busy but it wasn't distracting.
