The other day I was looking for somewhere to take a dear, elderly friend for dinner. We were quite early for the dinner hour (4:30pm), I drove to the front door knowing they weren't open for dinner yet. When I entered I was met by Stephen (owner/chef) who was busy working a crew for an off-site catering. He was kind enough to stop what he was doing to speak with me and offered my friend (who doesn't walk well) a table at the front of the restaurant. The servers were setting tables and quickly set up our table as I helped my friend in. THANK YOU! To Stephen and his amazing staff (Mary, Xavier, and the others) for a phenomenal evening for Evella and myself. SERVICE is EVERYTHING! Our meal was spectacular, as well were the drinks!

Even with the positive reviews here on Yelp, I was surprised (in a good way) at our experience here. Walking past historical markers for Confederate "heroes" and knowing the history of the city conveyed a sense that Tarboro's best days are behind it. If all of Tarboro can be as good as On the Square, it's got a lot to look forward to. My wife and I received a friendly welcome as we came through the door for our early-ish evening reservation (and got the Blue Hair Special seat next to the post in the middle of the back dining room - oh, well). Service from the start and through the meal was attentive but not bothersome. I began with the Classic Daiquiri, which was wonderfully tart rather than cloyingly sweet. Sandy had a Bees Knees as a mocktail and was charged an appropriately low price for what is basically club soda with some juice and honey syrup (for price gouging on this, I'm looking at you MACHETE). Brussels sprouts, Atlantic cod, and petit filet were all well-prepared and delicious -- and modestly priced for the quality. If I am ever in the area again, I will certainly and happily go back.

The 3 of us got 3 different dishes - salmon, filet and seafood crepes. All were delicious. We know because we couldn't resist sharing bites. This is amazing food at very reasonable prices. It makes you feel like you won the lottery.

We had a fabulous server and outstanding meal! Accommodations made for a food allergy was much appreciated. Low noise level. Chef is the best! Will be returning for another super dinner experience

As always, great food and excellent service. This time I tried the duck and Rebekah went with the swordfish steak. Wonderful flavors, beautiful ambience and a full restaurant where everyone seemed to be having a great time.

Really cute little historic restaurant. The Rachel sandwich was really good. The fried probably were good 30 minutes ago. Now they are cold and limp. They have a decent selection of alcohol at the bar and a nice wine room. I'd try it again.
Had lunch and really enjoyed the cherry salad. Service was friendly meals were reasonably priced. French fries were incredible.

Food was excellent. Our service was great. There was a noisy party of 20 next to where we were seated. It was a little overwhelming. The seats are very hard. The lighting, fresh flowers on the table, and the pictures on the wall were all very nice.
We always have an awesome dinner, usually I order one of the shellfish options. This time, I tried something new and ordered the duet of duck and it was delicious! If you enjoy a glass of wine or champagne, then speak with Xavier. He does an outstanding job of pairing wine with your dinner.

I have been frequenting OTS for years and it has always been an all around great experience. Lately, they have stepped up their game and has been excellent(er?). I highly recommend On The Square.
We love On The Square. It is our favorite restaurant of all time. Last night seemed a bit rushed, but I realized later that they were overwhelmed with heavy holiday traffic. They handled it well, including my whining.
