Winston-Salem benefits from a handful of places that serve decent breakfast offerings, and this is one such establishment. That said, I'll gripe for a moment because most of the city's preferred breakfast locations don't open until 7am or later. Many of us, myself included, would like to eat breakfast before we go to work...but I'm at work before 7! How about offering earlier opening times for us early risers? So as you can gather from the above, I didn't stop by for breakfast. Rather, I dropped into Midtown for lunch. I expected a bigger crowd but was quickly ushered to a table. The decor is pleasant. My choice for the meal was shrimp and grits, which in the Midtown offering also come topped with bacon pieces, green onions, and cheese. If you order this in the lowlands where the dish originated, you'll find what I'd call a gravy present in the dish as well, and from that comes much of the flavor for the meal. But that gravy was notably missing, and so too was the taste. Yes, I know it seems predictable to say a dish made up largely of grits is rather plain, but compared to the shrimp and grits I've grown to love this was indeed boring. I did get plenty of shrimp, bacon, and onions, I will admit. But I also used a LOT of black pepper to make something out of the blandness. Service was pretty good, though I wasn't especially demanding or needy during my visit. I did find myself a bit annoyed by the ruckus staff members made when rearranging tables, as they didn't seem to show any effort towards limiting the noise they made. Who wants to try enjoying a meal while furniture is dragged across the floor in the area adjacent to you? Just pick it up, carry it, and sit it down, y'all.

Nice spot but room for improvement. I came here for lunch with my coworkers; It was not too crowded and we sat outside because it was really warm (almost just as warm inside though, so it might not have made a difference). Our waitress brought us waters and then returned shortly for our food orders. I decided to try the grilled shrimp tacos, my coworkers got the sould/salad combo and a caesar salad with blackened salmon. The food took awhile to come out, about 15mins or so, and honestly, at least my portion, was a bit disappointing. Definitely bland and lacking in flavor - but maybe that's my fault for ordering tacos at a bakery! Also after we finished our lunches, we waited around another 10-15 mins for the check. Didn't really have any more time to get dessert without extending lunch too long. I think if I did return, it would only be to try a few desserts from their display case. Not sure I'd be enticed by the regular food menu alone.

I worked at this place 25 years ago and I love still coming here. One of my friends still works her, and we catch up. Service is fantastic, the food is amazing, and coffee is never empty! My ritual place to eat when I visit Winston-Salem ? ❤️Wheelchair accessibility: Makes life so much easier.

Breakfast is our favorite meal to eat out, and Winston-Salem has lots of great choices. Some friends gave us a gift card for the Midtown Cafe & Desertery, along with the recommendation that they had great breakfast (served all day). So, off we go to check it out. First, let me say, the food was very good. I ordered Eggs Over Easy, bacon, hash browns and a pancake. The eggs were cooked perfectly. Three slices of bacon were flavorful and cooked just right. The pancakes (they brought three) were fluffy and tasted good. And the has browns, we cooked properly and had good flavor. I have no complains about my breakfast. Carolyn blew my mind when she ordered Crabcakes and Grits! The grits were creamy and had just the right amount of butter and salt. The crabcakes were pan seared and placed in the grits and drizzled with a sauce. They were tasty and the presentation was top quality. Our server was prompt, check back regularly, kept the water glasses full, and was pleasant to deal with. We had several good laughs together. So, was our friend accurate? Most definitely, the food was delicious and the service was excellent. My only negative comment concerns the price. While not outrageous, it was on the high side. Our check was just over $30 with only water to drink. We have several favorite places that would have been about $21 for a similar meal. The do offer several "out of the box" items you won't find just anywhere. So, do we recommend Midtown, yes - as long as you don't mind the price. We will return, but not as often as to some of our other favorites.

I was happy to be back at the cafe and it was just as I remembered. The fajita wrap was a delightful lunch. I wish I had saved room for the marshmallow latte.

Very yummy, ordered this kind of around lunch, with a mimosa flight. I don't typically order a grilled cheese when I go out but it was really good.

One of my favorite places to eat. Birthday celebration was marvelous. I had French toast with fried chicken tenders, plus decaf coffee. My meal was cooked to perfection. My waitress gave me slice of five flavor pound cake. My.....my it was over the moon delicious.Vegetarian options: I am not vegetarian so I don't have experience of paying close attention.
