A delicious and memorable dining experience. The charm factor of this beautiful old space is off the charts and the staff were warm and friendly. Chef Evan Mallet is a wizard at sourcing the best local and seasonal ingredients. You can taste the passion and culinary skill in each dish. Reservations are not required but are highly suggested on busy nights. Pro tip: ask for the window tables upstairs to enjoy a romantic sunset!

Fantastic!Cocktails and food were amazing. I was a bit nervous with the portion sizes of the small and medium plates that we hadn't ordered enough, but the portion size for the main course was perfect (one small and one medium plate, and a main each for 2 people). Service was not slow but they definitely took their time, not a bad thing at all but I would be aware of this if you have a time commitment.

Let me preface this by saying none of the meals I tried are on the Black Trumpet menu. I attended a benefit dinner for Seacoast Eat Local and was blown away by the chef, the meals, and the wine pairings. The atmosphere is both charming and sophisticated. The servers were attentive and personable, despite juggling all of the guests. I'd love to come back for a meal and am looking forward to it!

Friendly staff and delicious, unique food. They gave me a recipe for game seasoning that I use to this day. Must try in a great town to visit.

Foodies delight. I have never been disappointed here. The food is out of this world. A collection of interesting ingredients and put together in an artful way that bite is a flavor powerhouse. Cooked to perfection, our venison was like butter, my duck was crispy with rich flavor. The fresh homemade bread and truffled butter with honey- omg. The snails in fontina fondue with pumpkin! Who comes up with these combinations? Ended up to meal with a hazelnut chocolate cheesecake with current coulis and fresh whipped cream with mint. Unbelievable. If you love creative, exquisitely prepared and flavored food- book a reservation. Also noteworthy is the rustic romantic ambience and the knowledgeable, veteran staff. A truly elevated food experience. Those that complained about portion sizes should stick to Applebees. This isn’t an inexpensive place. The time taken to prepare every ingredient is not cheap but worth it. Everything is locally sourced from highest quality purveyors or made in- house.

Bartender was quite rude when I was trying to find a seat at the bar. His attitude didn't make me feel welcome so I decided not to stay for drinks and food.
Exceptional food, wonderful service and great overall vibe. Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten.

The ambience was lovely and our food was fantastic. We were lucky to get seated immediately without a reservation. Our server was very nice. The bar can’t keep up when it’s busy. Either that, or our server forgot to put our drink order in. Pouring a glass of wine shouldn’t take half an hour. We would have loved to enjoy dessert but our drinks served as our “dessert”, since they took so long to arrive.

My husband and I were on our way to the White Mountains and decided to stop in Portsmouth New Hampshire for an overnight. I wanted to eat in a restaurant that had an intimate setting and delicious food and found it at the Black Trumpet. With low beamed ceiling and brick walls it was the perfect atmosphere for where we wanted to eat dinner. I had tge paella and my husband had the halibut. Both were delicious . We had the blue berry tart for dessert which blew us away. If you are looking for an intimate, dining experience & delicious food, don’t hesitate to eat here

Very nice experience. Fortunately, restaurant was not crowded which helped with the decibels. Server was excellent - fully informed and very helpful in answering questions. Food was delicious although unnecessarily heavy on the pepper on everything. Spices are fine - but pepper for pepper's sake really hides flavor more than enhances it.
