We came here because it was open on Monday and most Indian restaurants seem to be closed on Monday. The food was okay and we felt it was reasonably priced. The service was friendly. We ordered two thali plates and it had a nice variety and was tasty.

The chef is from Nepal. The waitstaff is Mexican. The food is a mishmash of all Asian cuisines. I was very impressed with the 4 dishes ordered however the chef is VERY heavy with the salt. The dishes are expensive but they are large so only order 1 dish per 2 people and it's a bargain. The rice is expensive but 1 large rice fed 4 adults. I really enjoyed the Volcano Chicken app. It's nothing like the Thai version. We had two Tilapia dishes. The waited recommended the Schezuwan sauce on one since I like a lot of spice. There was nothing wrong with the dish but the sauce was kind of boring and it wasn't spicy enough. I wish I ordered the chili fish! The whole table fought over the Chicken and black pepper. Excellent. It could have fed three of us if we all shared an appetizer.

I want to like Royal Kamling, but have a bad taste in my mouth - that's NOT from the food. So I went there for a late night dinner with my girlfriend and her family. It was unplanned; I left the choice of where to eat up to her, and like usual, she didn't plan properly and couldn't find where we were supposed to go, so she decided to eat here. Royal Kamling is, as stated in the other reviews, more of an Indochinese restaurant - a mishmash of cuisines. I don't have a lot of experience with the type of fusion that this area of New Jersey seems to predominantly offer, but I do have experience with "pure" Indian, Thai and Chinese food. We ordered hakka noodles, coriander chicken, vegetable green curry and spicy cauliflower. I found myself actually quite enjoying the food; it was pretty tasty overall, with the noodles actually being the best, and the curry quite tasty, while the chicken was just slathered in an oily, generic asian sauce. Overall, the food was solid. The decor was fairly nice, especially given its relatively humble strip mall roots, and the restaurant has a sound system quietly playing insipid music reminicent of what you'd hear in a mall clothing boutique. The bathroom was clean and had very nice fixtures, which was consistent with the restaurant's attempt to move upscale. The prices are also upscale, with a roughly $12 to $15 average entree price for modest portions (though I feel the portion size is reasonable for an average person who does not overeat) - but a bit higher than area restaurants. Service was also good - attentive, prompt and polite. Overall, I was fairly impressed with Royal Kamling, except for two specific issues. When I received the bill, I noticed that the two bowls of rice we ordered were almost $6 apiece. That was a bit of sticker shock. Now, I fully admit this was on the menu, though I didn't see it - we just asked if rice came with the entrees (they don't, which is out of line with comparable area restaurants), and when the server said they weren't, we just asked for three bowls. The server said each bowl would be for about two people, and recommended getting two bowls, as we could always bring more. Now, I'm a former restaurant proprietor, and I'm all for restaurants making money where they can - but $6 for a bowl of rice (technically $5.95 apiece) is really gouging, and left a bad taste in my mouth...that wasn't from the food. When the manager brought the check over, I asked about the rice, if there was anything special about it. She unhelpfully pointed out that the price was in the menu (seemingly somewhat defensive about the price). I actually didn't care that it was stated in the menu, I just wanted to see if there was anything special about the rice that could justify it costing so much. There wasn't. It doesn't help that offering rice is standard in other comparable area restaurants, and I wouldn't have raised an eyebrow at $1 to $3; but $6 is pretty brazen. The other annoyance, that was relatively minor, was that we were charged 18% right away for a service charge for our party of five (it may be in the small print of the menu, I don't know). Now, I didn't mind that much, given that I was very happy with the service overall, and usually tip at 20%; but I too favor the school of thought that makes gratuities a reward for good service. I enjoyed the quality of the food and decor at Royal Kamling. The service was good. The value against what was charged was poor, with portion size and additional costs qualifying as gouging. The average bill per person for our dinner party was $20, with only water and no appetizers (a free kimchi with what seemed to be carrots and pineapples was given prior to dinner entrees being served; it wasn't bad, wasn't great). At the end of the day, there's only one question that matters to any business that a restaurant proprietor needs to know the answer to from their customers: would you recommend this restaurant to friends and family? This place is a Indochinese restaurant, not really Thai restaurant even though they have a few Thai things on the menu. Compared to the other Indochinese places in the area (Chopstick and Ming) you get quality and good service. I never liked Indochinese til I had it here, Ming always left me underwhelmed and the prices always never justified the food -- maybe for a fancy fine dining Indochinese place it's good. Can't speak too much to the Chopstick in Edison but the one in North Brunswick (same chain) was greasy! What I have tried at Royal Kamling Hakka Noodles - my second fav dish Chili Chicken Hakka Style Shrimp Hot Garlic Chilli Paneer - my fav dish by far Kamling Fried Rice Food is spicy but can be toned down if you just ask them. It is a bit on the pricier side considering the ambiance but to be honest to have my entire family (including extended family) all seated at one table, with prompt service, good food, and consistent over multiple visits you have my vote as good restaurant. Oh yeah its BYOB! It's huge deal for me since I spend so much time in NYC where the bill typically ends up being the wine bottle.
