Not sure how the rating is 3.9...... whoever rates Belmont Tavern low is a dope and doesn't deserve to be in the presence of those of us that know it's literally the best!!!!!!

Went on a Sunday place opens at 5 we arrived at 5:24pm place was mobbed definitely a fire hazard. We waited about 40 min. They had a table right smack next to the entrance. Bad idea! That is where they sat us. I asked for another table, blonde who sat us was rude telling me that i cannot be picky on a Sunday! I have been coming to the Belmont for yrs. This was the absolute worst experience I ever had. Ppl were literally bumping into me as they stood right on top of us while waiting to be seated. The large window in front had the sun beaming right into my face I should have had a pair of sunglasses in hand. They rush ppl in & out like cattle. We ordered our food to GO! Unfortunately I will NOT go back here. There are way too many "just as good" Italian restaurants as The Belmont where you are treated respectfully, and not rushed! Luigi parmigiana in Montclair, highly recommended. Skip the Belmont you're not missing anything.

Fun place to visit. Food is tasty and atmosphere is lively, albeit, it does get crowded on Saturday nights especially! That chicken dish is superb Staff is attentive despite the crowds. I'd return and recommend to others!

If you want old school Italian, this is the place for you. My family heard about the Belmont Tavern and decided to drive 40 minutes to check this place out. We arrived early on a Friday night, around 5:45PM. It is in a little bit of a rough area and finding parking on the street can be a challenge. The interior does not look like it's changed since it opened. Red and white checkered table cloths, wood paneled walls, and even a phone booth that lights up when you shut the door! All of the customers are all locals. The Tavern is known for their Shrimp Beeps and Chicken Savoy. My recommendation is the Shrimp Beeps over spaghetti. If you order more than one serving, it is served family style. Some of my family members ordered the Chicken Murphy and Chicken Savoy which are more like chicken parts rather than chicken breast. They both thought it was on the dry side. The service is good although we did feel a bit rushed since it was getting busy.

Service is absolutely awful. My family and I (party of six) waited for over an hour while people sat and talked at tables they were finished eating at only to be told we "can only order once." We ordered our food and she asked if that is all we wanted and we said well order more if we need more food and her response is "no you can only order once we have too many people waiting." After we just waited over an hour to sit we're being rushed out of there. There were parties of two talking and eating at a table set for six. Waitress asked us what our drink orders were and we ordered water her response is "bar drinks right now we'll get everyone a water." Never got water. Had to ask again. She only brought two. Had to ask again. Brought two more. And finally someone else served us more. Meanwhile the table next to us has ordered multiple meals, they didn't get the "one shot at ordering" treatment. Besides the bad service, the food isn't as extravagant as people say. The shrimp beeps were fishy, clams were really small. Too much garlic in the pasta (which was overcooked) and the bread, ice cold. And don't even bother if you're not a regular. People walking right in and sitting down while other people wait for hours.

Server not very friendly, seemed to be tired, unhappy. The place just gave us the vibe that they were doing us a favor by seating & serving us, kind of like we should be thrilled to be there. Good food, have had better.

The old-world charm of this place is overwhelming- you feel like you stepped into a time machine. I mean, when was the last time you went to a restaurant that didn't serve dessert- and required you to bring your own? The menu is simple and inviting. The food- eh. Oily and bland. The problem is the service is awful- not just slow, but hostile. You want a glass of water with your meal? Good luck. Special instructions on your order? No way. Sad to say, we stopped going b/c the staff makes it an uncomfortable experience.

The Belmont never disappoints. Great food, great atmosphere. Loved the shrimp beeps, chicken savoy and the hot peppers!

I like the relaxed pace at the Belmont Tavern, I like the friendly waitress, I like the old school dive bar atmosphere, I like the bread and escarole salad that comes automatically, and I love the family style service with huge bowls of pasta. I don't like that there's no draft beer, there's no calamari, there's no dessert not even a cannoli, and I sure don't like paying $20 for a bowl of spaghetti in olive oil. It's average food, even the fried shrimp in red sauce ("beeps"), and it takes a very long time to come out. If you're catching up with people and you're enjoying a carafe of the house red wine, the slow service is fine. Tables are so close together it's like you're in the City. No eating at the bar. Bring cash and patience. Don't bring the wife. Calling this a seafood place is an insult to seafood places.

The food, AMAZING. It gets BUSY, because it's that good. They are known for their shrimp beeps and it doesn't disappoint. Cash only!

So embarrassed for this place. I get the attitude. Old school yada yada ... Food to me always average , but my friend has old memories there and it was his birthday. Got there at opening. got our name in and waited an hour and a half for our name to even be considered. Jimmy was no help. Impression was he was working us to stay at bar for a bigger check. Really a black eye for the place since we have supported all in this area . including all families Really would love a response. if they even care !

If you know, you know. If you don't...well, this is an iconic establishment. What they do, they do well. What they don't, don't ask for. As an NJ born and bred Italian American, this place reminds me of my Grandparent's basement on 6th Ave in Paterson. Food is very very good. I'd eat the salad (escarole) until I passed out. I'm convinced no human has ever walked out not having tasted the chicken savoy.

Very overrated, very rude and I'' very sure I will never return. Way too much attitude and the food is mediocre. I ordered the pork chop with hot vinegar peppers. Extremely overcooked and way too much vinegar. I was expecting a sauce with vinegar flavor not drowned in vinegar. The pork was dry and hard to cut. It tasted like a tire. The clams had sand in them and the scungilli was underwhelming. The place needs a major overhaul. I used to be a fan of the Belmont but my last experience here just turned me off. Will never return.
