First time there, sat a a table, very good overall. Fresh sushi, delicate pieces. One negative, the Spicy Shumi Sashimi Salad which was a bit too spicy and several fish morsels that were sinewy and should never have made it into a salad. Should've mentioned this to the server but didn't. Was hoping for a salad similar to the iconic Nobu Sashimi salad but sadly, no. Otherwise everything else was tasty, well prepared and served in a timely fashion. Not crazy about having to browse the menu on my phone and also would have been nice to have been prompted that its BYOB

Came here for their Shumi Omakase lunch. Was pleasantly surprised by the overall variety of pieces, flavors and combinations. Watching the head sushi chef, work and train his sous chefs was cool experience as well. You can also tell the quality of a craftsman, by the level of respect they teach with. Overall a great experience. Will return again.

food is great and chefs get everything out quick. Service wasn't great no one came over to take our order I had to flag someone down. We also waited 20 minutes to sit for a reservation.

My Friday night reservation at the restaurant, made through OpenTable, took an unexpected turn when the manager informed us they couldn't honor it. Despite having made a reservation through OpenTable, on our way to the restaurant, we received a phone call from the manager informing us that they were unable to accommodate our reservation. This unexpected news left us feeling confused and, more importantly, profoundly disappointed. The manager's explanation was both perplexing and disheartening, asserting that despite our reservation being facilitated through OpenTable, they were not accountable for upholding it. While we acknowledge the restaurant's partnership with OpenTable, the lack of responsibility for honoring reservations made through the platform left us bewildered.A more transparent and customer-centric explanation would have been appreciated. Instead, the manager blamed OpenTable and ended the conversation without an apology, leaving us disappointed. A simple acknowledgment and apology could have made a significant difference.

I've probably eaten here 10x at this point. Service is friendly and not rushed. We love the Galbi(short rib). It's marinated so well. It's tender but not too fatty or chewy. Great appetizer ahead of the sushi The Tuna Poke Tartare was delicious. There is a Salmon Poke salad that is delicious too. The fish is all very fresh. I'll be back. It's BYOB. The selection at the liquor store around the corner is OK. I'd rather bring my own from my preferred liquor store or home.

I requested 2 times to the waiter captain a little dessert since it was my young son's birthday that day. He completely ignored me :-( We all have omakase 5 courses. Food was great as always but at the end being ignored with such a small request wasn't nice.

It's definitely up there with the best omakase in NJ. Many others just can't compare with the value on offer. I've been here for lunch and dinner, and while I think dinner service is more professional, the lunch offers better overall value. The quality of all of the rolls here are top notch, and I would definitely recommend snagging a seat at the counter if you can. Some highlights from the omakase for me were the seared eel with yuzu dressing and seared yellowtail with yuzu. The uni here is also delectable in its texture and flavor.

The sushi and ramen were both outstanding. The staff were friendly and overall it was a great dinner spot. Only reason for 4 stars was the initial seating and how busy/crowded it was for a Sat night.

Appetizers were better than the sushi. I have no issue paying premium price for sushi but the quality and quantity doesn’t match with what you are paying for. The nigiri was soooo tiny and paper thin slices of fish, it’s not a bad place but don’t understand the hype and high reviews about this

Shumi used to be my go to sushi spot in Ridgewood. The last few times though I'm just not so impressed with it anymore. Seems the portions are smaller and just not as tasty. Shumi staff used to make us feel like family however the service isn't that great anymore either since Sylvia left. Seems very impersonal and like the just want you in and out quick. Not saying I won't go back because I will. The food is still good, just not great anymore. Hoping it was just a few bad nights that I managed to dine there and it's not a permanent change. Sorry, hope they don't go fully down hill.
