Sad news for Indian food lovers on Manhattan. Amma, the best Indian restaurant has closed. I'm hoping they will open us somewhere else but for now, they have vacated the space. Their food was my favorite. I live close by so I was there regularly. Before the pandemic, the place was packed every night. There was a nice ambiance, the wait staff was attentive and the food had a very balanced feel to it. Not too salty, or too oily or even too spicy. It kind of felt like home cooking to me. My favorite was the Chana Saag, spinach with chickpeas. I'm sort of a connoisseur with this dish and Amma was the best. It was always consistent and really hit the spot, especially on a cold winter night with some garlic naan. The beet root kafta was really unique as well. I'm mostly vegetarian so I can only speak for those dishes but they will be sorely missed. Besides the food, the owner and staff were always pleasant to interact with. Best wishes to all the staff! Amma will be missed.

Friendly people. Unfortunately the service was very slow (outdoor tent). As for the food, the prices are very high for the quantity, and the quality does not justify it either. Both prawns and chicken were quite overcooked and dry. The seasoning was unimpressive as well.

The food and service was excellent . The food was freshly made and tasted delicious . We had the lunch specials which was good sized portions and filling . They maintain all Covid protocols and the place was very clean and neat .

We were looking to try a different restaurant for our Christmas Eve dinner. I found Amma on Open Table and the menu and reviews looked good. Turns out we we arrived at Amma, my wife said “we've eaten here before”. It must have been years ago. Turned out the food was excellent and the service was good. It was a pleasant Christmas Eve dinner that we both enjoyed.

We just took a 4 days trip to NY and tried many Indian restaurants during our visit. Amma turned out to be the best food and best service. Very elegantly decorated dining room with great and humble service. Highly recommended to anyone looking for good Indian food in NY.

How the mighty have fallen. I was shocked at the terrible execution that we experienced last night. We had previously been to this restaurant many times prior to the pandemic and it appears as if there is new ownership or absentee ownership because everything about the experience was second rate. No need to pay high prices in Midtown for not very good Indian food with microscopically small portions but exponentially high prices. Very amateur turn for this once high-end Indian restaurant. Pass.

We went with the vegetarian tasting menu and it was exquisite! We HIGHLY recommend Amma for a romantic date night, which was us, but the place is also great for family night out or a post-work get together, which was all happening (and handled perfectly) while we were there. We felt very safe with their Covid-19 precautions.

Two lunch specials come with so much food! The servers are super friendly and took the time to explain and recommend items on the menu. The first dishes came out super quickly and we waited a bit longer for the main dishes. Definitely recommend the fried okra and salmon as well as the lamb curry. At first they gave us the wrong curry, but when we told them they quickly made us a new bowl and let us keep the wrong order. Everything was really delicious, and I always love Indian food so this restaurant is a definite go to!

Excellent food, excellent service. We were a group of 15. We tried a wide variety of food ranging from vegetarian to non vegetarian and including fish. Every single dish, dessert, tea and coffee were all very good. A hidden gem, a must try.

Amma continues to exceed our expectations on every dimension. The food is fantastic, and no other restaurant has Amma's signature spinach chaat dish with fresh sprout mung beans that delights every guest we have ever invited to the restaurant. their channa saag is delicious and is not to be missed. Deserts are delivered every time like it is someone's birthday with messages written in mango and tamarind sauces. But what separates Amma from every other restaurant in New York is how warmly we are received by Anju, Dev, and our personal waiter Ricky. We feel like special guests every time we dine at Amma and I believe if you given Amma a chance, you will feel like we do about this wonderful restaurant.

Delicious food at great price. Fantastic for those that love it spicy ?! Great service as well. Highly recommend! We went before an 8pm Broadway show at 5:30, and had plenty of time to eat and leisurely stroll to the Lyceum theater. We could've reserved at 6 and still made it no problem.

We had a lovely dinner at Amma at an outdoor table. They have heat lamps for colder weather, which definitely came in handy. With one vegetarian and one omnivore diner, we found that Amma had the perfect balance of options. We had beetroot kofta and paneer makhni, both of which were delicious. The keema naan was a great addition. The atmosphere was comfortable and pleasant, and the staff were very attentive. I would definitely recommend Amma for an upscale and high quality evening out.

Amma has been my go to restaurant for last 14 years. Ever since my first visit in 2007 I have gone back to this place ever time I wanted some good food. The owner and the staff are extremely courteous and they even gave my wife a cheese cake when we told her that it was my wife's birthday and this was where she wanted to celebrate. The cake was a surprise from the restaurant. Try the karakari bhindi and madras chicken.

Was visiting NYC and wanted good Indian food. I was recommended Amma, and they did not disappoint. Food was soooo good. Appetizers - The beet cutlet was new to me, and I really liked it. It was like a pillow-soft mini donut. Fried okra was yummy. Not too dry, seasoned well, not dripping with oil. This was my first time seeing a bhel puri or chaat papri. They were both delightfully new combinations of sweet, savory, umami, and crunchy. Dunk or brush with the chutney for an even more intense burst of flavor! Entree highlights - The prawns were amazing! Heavily seasoned and lightly fried, yet I could taste the freshness of the prawns and get that full textured bite that I expected. The tandoori chicken was just how I like it - the white meat was juicy, the skin was crispy, and of course bursting with flavor. The salmon was fresh, definitely not overbaked as many restaurants are prone to do, and the accompaniments were delicious as well. Others - The other dishes were all very good as well, but I feel like the above 3 dishes shined a bit more. The curries were well seasoned but not salty and had a balanced creamy texture. The chicken dishes all had a good bite and weren't too dry. The naan was soft yet crispy on the bottom. I liked that the plating was fairly simple with just a few garnishes because the food really spoke well for itself.
