Before ever receiving water saw three cockroaches crawling in the open kitchen which the seats sit on the outskirts of. One right in front of me. Walked out immediately. Three German cockroaches in under 5 minutes is a sure sign of a big infestation. Hope they do the right thing and shut down to take care of the issue.

Got the Omakase. The experience was unreal. The chef is a genius. The server was incredibly attentive.Very lucky to have found this gem!

My son brought me to Gouie for my birthday. It may be a counter with a few seats, but the food and service were beyond outstanding!!!!! Sake tastings were incredible. The staff was beyond wonderful. The food...I cannot put into words how great the food was. Sad to see this place close at the end of this month. Somebody scoop them up and get them a place!!!! STAT!!!

My boyfriend surprised me with a date night at Guie. Initially, everything was spot on. The food was delicious, staff served our table was super friendly and attentive. However, things took a turn when I ordered additional dishes. It seemed to annoy the chef, and the chef ended up YELLING at me LOUDLY. It really put a damper on my evening. I'm very upset and confused. We were genuinely enjoying the meal and had no hesitation in paying for the additional orders. At no point were we informed of any policy against ordering additional items. This unexpected response cast a shadow over what was an otherwise delightful dining experience.

I thought this was a sake bar, but I was pleasantly surprised it's a Japanese sushi restaurant with a big sake selection. Although I didn't try the omakase, I thoroughly enjoyed 10 pieces of nigiri and a deliciously hot, mushroom-filled egg custard. Despite its humble location among thrift shops and fast-food spots I thought it was like a food "speakeasy."

Absolutely delicious! Perfect for a casual date night with my husband. I even ordered a second plate (pictured) because I couldn't get enough. My fav. was the scallop sushi!

Stopped in on a whim after a nearby event and was pleasantly surprised - and quite impressed - with the sushi at this Essex street spot. The portions are normal, not oversized, and the quality is very very good. They also have a good sake list.

We shared a wonderful meal at Gouie. It exceeded all expectations. Great hospitality and even better food. The omakase was creative, delicious, and the seafood quality was top notch. Would dine here again!

Great experience and extremely fast order preparation. If you want to try a la carte sushi rolls, as soon as you finish one, the next one you ordered will be up in no time! Friendly service and a quaint space to have quality sushi and sake!

Definitely try their kaiseki menu - it changes every month and is a good introduction into Japanese cuisine. They also have a super affordable sake pairing for $40.

Hey NYC! If you’re on the hunt for an authentic Japanese dining experience, look no further than Gouie in Essex Market, Downtown Manhattan. Their Omakase is a culinary masterpiece, blending traditional flavors with a modern twist. Each dish is crafted with precision and passion, making every bite a delightful surprise. It’s not just a meal, it’s a journey through the heart of Japanese cuisine. Highly recommend you give Gouie a try – it’s a game-changer in the NYC food scene!

Oh man.. wanted this to become my new value sushi spot in LES and was so excited by all the positive buzz. Sadly was much below my high expectations. It is a somewhat decent value if you do the sushi plates from the counter menu ( not omakase). The sushi was fresh but just completely lacking in the flavor department. I always prefer when the sushi comes seasoned with wasabi and soy to the chefs recommendation, which Gouie does not do. I could live with that but the rice itself was borderline cold , which really messed with the overall flavors and togetherness of each sushi piece. Nothing was terrible or anything, it just wasn't anything special at all. Pretty bland and uninteresting sushi. There are so many affordable omakases in the neighborhood that take more care over each piece that is served to its customers. The host/waiter (wearing a Yankee hat) was extremely friendly and helpful - appreciate you! I was also disappointed that the restaurant was unwilling to make a medium tuna and scallion roll when they ran out of fatty tuna. I know I'm in the minority here but felt like I had to share my disappointment to contrast some of the glowing reviews. Perhaps we came on an off night

My partner and I were eating a few things around Essex Market for lunch and our top spot was here. The miso-glazed black cod was especially flavorful and delicious. The customer service was great. Will come back on our next trip into the

I have no experience of Gouie. But the reservation service they use (Resy) is awful - someone entered my number in that system and they kept texting me about a reservation when I'm in MAWithout a direct phone number at the restaurant, there was no way for me to respond. So, someone didn't get to confirm or cancel, and no human from Gouie tried to check.Robots and apps cannot replace human beings!
