This place has been in business since early 80’s untouched. Everything is the same even they play same music form 80s and 90s and in a way is little depressing specially downstairs.I wish they could get it back to the they way it was.

Sad to see other poor reviews, but we honestly had a great time! The staff at the door was very kind, welcoming, and helpful even though they were super busy! Our bartender was very funny, personable, and kind. The bar upstairs is so unique, but downstairs? WOW! It’s a very fun bar. Their staff was all very kind and the queen hosting was hilarious. I will say for some people though: if you can’t follow the rules of no recording or vaping inside, don’t go. You ruin it for everyone else and you will get kicked out lol. I will say, one of the dancers was rude and asking us for more money(???), but staff listened to our complaints and sympathized with us. Definitely coming back! VIP tix were worth it to have a table and seats so we could stay as long as we wanted. Definitely know what you’re getting yourself into if you go downstairs for Spunk. Honestly probably our favorite bar on our gay bar crawl!

I loved!! One of my favorite bars in NY. The piano, it's very funny how people sing. Downstairs there is a disco with dancers, the proposal is very interesting!! I loved the Margarita drink, highly recommended!!!

Rude disrespectful bartender Friday night December 29th. I went there for the first time and paid the cover charge and went inside and use the bathroom came out and sat at the bar and the bartender never acknowledged me as of what drink I desire. He was too busy socializing, making other drinks. So another patron sat next to me and within seconds he waited on the patron. I politely excused myself and left and to be honest I should have ask for my 10 dollars back. Either it was as my skin color or I don’t speak of his native tongue. Either way never again. I went across the street and had a great time at Stone wall inn. I was great by the bartender soon as I walked in and waited me. For us as gay queer or whatever, we areOt the same.

It was my very first time coming to the place for a friend’s birthday celebration. Not knowing how private dancing works i was grabbed by a Latino dancer “Luis” and somehow convinced me to the $20 experience. It ended with him touching all over my body to the point that I should've been the one charging, not him! He prolonged the dance til it reached $100 without me noticing cause he was choking me aggressively. I tried explaining to the queens who were assigned what happened but they seem to have a scam going on. Definitely first and last for me. Be mindful of these people. They’re not all nice. They don’t care if youre Trans or a first timer. ??

Downstairs bar tender was so rude. He set a drink right behind my arm and it spilled all over my jacket. He then proceeded to yell at me when I let him know it was his fault. Save yourself the money and don't go

No food. An old NYC gay staple. Older crowd but inexpensive good drinks, good place to go with friends but don’t go there to see and be seen. It’s not that kind of

The Monster: A Monstrous Missed Opportunity In a city as vibrant and diverse as New York, one would expect its LGBTQ+ community and allies to have access to a dazzling array of establishments that celebrate the kaleidoscope of identities that call this metropolis home. But alas, my recent visit to The Monster in the heart of The Village left me pondering a burning question: why should we settle for subpar when we could have so much more? The Monster, to put it bluntly, is a run-of-the-mill gay bar. Now, let's be clear - there's absolutely nothing wrong with run-of-the-mill if you're talking about your standard neighborhood pub. But when it comes to a place designed to be a haven for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, why settle for less? The central query that arises is why must we resign ourselves to venues like The Monster that fail to rise above mediocrity? Is it due to financial constraints, making it more sustainable to operate a bland, cookie-cutter bar than to invest in one with intentional design and ambience? It's a theory that warrants examination, as it's a disservice to a community that deserves spaces that truly reflect its vibrant spirit and rich diversity. Now, I can hear the whispers of those who say, "Who cares about ambience? Give me cheap drinks and a dance floor, and I'm good to go!" And, to be fair, if you fall into this category, The Monster might just be your kind of haunt. It offers affordability and a downstairs dance floor that beckons with the promise of liberating moves. But as much as we cherish any place that allows us to be ourselves, we should also ask for more. Our community deserves venues that honor our history, creativity, and the spectrum of identities within it. We deserve establishments that don't merely settle for the mundane, but instead, aspire to be as extraordinary as the people they serve. So, dear LGBTQ+ community and allies, while The Monster might provide a budget-friendly escape for the night, let's continue to push for and support venues that embrace the full spectrum of our uniqueness. We deserve better, and our community's legacy and future demand it. Don't settle for less when you could have so much more.

Today again the bartender ERIK... had the same discrimination as the previous times with us because he is a guy who is racist because he is Latino and treats the same Latinos very badly. It is not a good service for this excellent place.. next time I visit come back and discriminate against me I will report it

The Monster bar is across Sheridan Square from the Stonewall Inn. Monster has an oval bar (complete with beefy bartenders!) and open lounge area with a piano bar upstairs. Downstairs is a big dance floor area with a long bar along one wall. A stage for the go-go boys and a DJ booth are at one end of the room. Monster has all kinds-- bears, drag queens, women (real ones), queer punks, and muscle guys but mostly men. When I was there in the wee hours of 5/18/14 I paid $7.00 for a rum and coke, and the cover charge was ~$9. Two buff dancer guys were on the go-go stage. The only real problem with this bar is it only has one (unisex) bathroom. I think Monster would be a good substitute for the now-closed Splash Bar. Yes, I would go back. Aaaand...I revisited on 6/21/22. I paid a $10 cover charge and $10-$12 for a _dinky_ rum and coke. Monster was crowded, especially downstairs where the stage, plinths, and dance floor are (and the lap dance area.) The piano player for karaoke was novel and enjoyable. The "Spunk" go-go boys were a diverse group of buff guys. I got a lap dance from the short but amazingly solidly built Latino musculoso ($70 but well worth it.) He was awesome! I will definitely go back next time I am in NYC.Parking: Street parking is free on weekends but very hit-or-miss. You will probably have to use a pay-to-park garage.
