I have never stayed at the hotel, but I have eaten there dozens of times. The food is incredible, the service is unmatched. This is my favorite place in Sharon Springs.

I had an interview in Cobleskill. I had the great fortune of staying in the American. I got in late, after normal check-in, and got a fantastic email taking me through the steps of how to get access and then on to my room.To say I was blown away is an understatement. The decor and overall vibe of the place is amazing. It’s history, culture, and spirit all rolled into different rooms with different personalities. The building is, well, alive with all of the history and fun things you see on the walls and generally decorating the place. Same goes for outside. It’s just so welcoming. That was only surpassed by Garth and Doug. What kind, kind men and what lovely humans. You get a clear sense that the openness and warmth of the hotel is a direct result and reflection of them. It’s not often you want to get to know your hotel hosts better, but they create the space where this kind of thing is possible.Being on an interview is stressful and one needs all the help to be calm. The American, Doug and Garth, gave me the opportunity to gather myself, relax and be my best.Do yourself a favor. Go see this treasure.

Staying at the American Hotel is a fun and exciting experience because it is such an amazing historic landmark. The style of the hotel and the decoration does an amazing job immersing you in the history of Sharon Springs and the era in which traveling to the hot springs was an essential part of elite life. The outdoor sitting area behind the hotel is quiet and pleasant. The upstairs balcony is very nice and lets you see out across the downtown historic district on Main Street. Breakfasts at the American Hotel are made to order and are consistently amazing.

Absolutely lovely! I arrived late, and self-checkin was easy with clear communication. Room was very clean and comfortable. AC worked well. Enjoy the delicious breakfast in the garden if you can- so nice.

The American Hotel is an exceptional hotel to stay at for a vacation. The building gives you a feeling of traveling back in time to the 19th century. There are a lot of great common areas to relax at including nice lounge chairs near the bar, a spacious main dining area, and a peaceful and pleasant backyard with tables and chairs for anyone who wants to eat outside. There is also a nice front porch at street level and another one a level up if you want to be up above the street and see everyone driving and walking by. Breakfasts, which are included in the room price, are excellent and are made individually so you have a great deal of flexibility to customize your order to your tastes. The location is excellent. It is right in the middle of Sharon Springs, surrounded by quaint local shops like Beekman 1802 and McGillycuddy's. There is an excellent restaurant (204 Main) that is less than a 5 minute walk away, and a very nice cafe (Black Cat) across the street. It is a fairly short drive to major attractions like the Baseball Hall of Fame, Howe Cavern, and Glimmerglass State Park.

Sharon Springs is slowly coming back to life and innkeepers, Doug and Garth, are, in large measure, responsible. They have lovingly restored a treasure of a historic inn and continue to insure that other buildings in Sharon Springs receive similar attention. While dinner is no longer offered, there are other restaurants in walking distance to enjoy. Breakfast is made to order and dietary restrictions are readily accommodated. Breakfast on the patio next to a gentle fountain is a wonderful way to begin the morning. Doug and Garth are a wealth of information about the area. An easy drive from Glimmerglass and Cooperstown, the American Hotel is a wonderful escape to spend a few evenings.

We had such a nice stay for the long weekend. Our room was a little small, but it was clean and perfectly kept each day. Breakfast was wonderful, and worth the trip just for that! We sat on the front porch at night, sipped wine and watched the world go by. Was quiet, relaxed, and very nice. Enjoyed our chats with owner Doug as well! Can't wait to go back!

I stayed overnight with my girlfriends after a Goat Tour…it was a perfect experience from checking in to leaving. The owners Garth & Doug are there front & center, catering to anything a guest needs! We were only there overnight but felt we made friends with them before we left…they made the Inn our home! Downstairs is comfortable and cozy - rocking chairs on the front porch & a peaceful back yard with a garden and fountain to sit and relax. The rooms are pristine and the decor is just beautifully done…and the breakfast…all I can say is “wow”! We got the corn pancakes with apple, bacon and maple syrup…but everything looked (and smelled) delicious!! My 1st time - not my last…thank you Garth & Doug!

ive always loved this place however, yesterdays brunch was not up to par.the eggs benedict was not acceptable.both eggs were cooked almost to hard boil.no creamy yellow yolk running from the eggs.potates were cold and we both had about 6 to 8 on our plate.waitress was not attentive and never asked us if we needed anything or if our food was ok.another waitress finally stopped by so we could have refills on our coffee as we were eating breakfast.i understand good help is scarce right now however we are paying customers and deserve better.as i said,i was always happy with the food there but not this time.wait staff needs more training along with the chef checking his food preparation before he sends it out.if its not perfect,do it again!
