I usually grab coffee at the Lee Rd Rising Star, but I stopped by Van Aken on Wednesday and was disappointed to find that Rising Star had partnered with the Shaker Heights Police Department for “Coffee with a Cop.” In 2024, local businesses (especially those with a hip facade) should know better than to do free PR for police

I'll start with AMAZING, in every respect - especially the staff behind the counter Lou and Mero. You guys rock. After having had one my worst lifetime coffee experiences the day before in Little Italy (you probably know what store I'm talking about - gag), I had my doubts about another Cleveland Coffee Shop. Well, boy was I dead wrong. First of all you can (must) get your coffee in either glassware or ceramic - did you know that in the US we use 16 billion single use coffee cups a year? Not to mention it tastes much better. So A+ for that. Then, the spelling of all the espresso drinks is correct. Major pet peeve to see missing Cs and Ps in cappuccino, missing H or C in Macchiato etc. And they have Cortado! Two bean choices for espresso drinks including a single origin from Oaxaca?! OMG. And Lou speaks accentless Spanish? Oh, and the cortados and cappuccino were seriously top notch. Spoiled in LA with amazing coffee shops everywhere, but I wish we had Lou, Mero and Rising Star here as well. Well done Cleveland! Can't wait to go back. Gracias.

Barista who not only tore down posters of the Israeli hostages but even worse stated that they weren’t wanted. The owners have yet to respond. This is supporting this hate filled propaganda. They will feel the consequences.

Absolutely horrible chai latte.Waited 15 minutes for it to be made and it was luke warm at best.Employees have zero customer service concept, no greeting and no thank you even after I tipped.Sad!

Rising Star makes some of the best coffee drinks in Northeast Ohio. Their mocha has the right amount of sweet and chocolate without overpowering the coffee. The cardamom bomb is my favorite specialty drink. I appreciate the zero upcharge for oat milk and the discount for bringing a reusable cup. Highly recommend checking them out for a good cup. They offer a wide selection of roasted beans too, sometimes they're a hit, other times a miss, but I always enjoy trying something new.

Ripping down pictures of hostages? Not a good look

I went a few weeks ago and was so appalled by the way they treat their customers. Coffee was really not good either. Didn’t leave a review because I didn’t think it was worth my time. Found out yesterday the barista rips down posters of kidnapped children. Now it all adds up. Clearly is not a good person and should be ashamed.
Rude barista workers. Overpriced garbage coffee and they take forever.

The worst place to get coffee. The staff take way too long and are so unprofessional. Overpriced and mediocre. Avoid like the plague.

I love Van Aken, and I love coffee, so this place will always be amazing to me. You can really taste the quality of ingredients in their coffees, making the price worth every sip. My husband’s favorite is the promised land, I love to try everything, but do always love a good lavender latte, and then either sit down around the numerous table options in market hall, or walk around the strip and enjoy window shopping and the beautiful weather outside!
