Tiny place with limited seating. The pice was pretty good for omakase. Service was good but could not understand what the check was saying the whole time, maybe it's the mask? However, the food more than makes up for it.They have the best sea urchin I tasted in my life. Never knew it could taste like that and taste so good.

OK so I can't compare this to any other Omakase restaurant that charges from $170 & up but I can honestly say that this place makes me feel rich for a minimal (Omakase) fee. The restaurant feels exclusive and intimate. When you walk through the front door, there is a small hallway that leads to another door that is closed. Someone will come open the door to greet you, take your name & take you to your seat(s) as well as offer to hang up your coat/jacket. There is only seating for approximately 12 guests which is why this place feels so intimate. Once seated, they bring you a warm cloth to wipe your hands and ask you what you would like to drink. I ordered the Japanese green tea & it taste authentic and of high quality. My server would come by throughout dinner service to keep it filled & at about the half way point, even offered to change out the cup entirely so I could get a cup of newly hot tea. For the appetizer, we had the Chawanmushi (Japanese savory steamed egg custard). The custard was silky and smooth with lots of snow crab in it as well as Chinese mushroom. I can't remember what else was in it however it was delicate yet complex and the juice from the broth made each bite utterly satisfying and surprising. Following that, we were delighted with 10 pieces of sushi of varying fish from Toro, chu-Toro, otoro to scallops and uni also known as sea urchin (raw shrimp with a dollop of uni). Next in the Umi experience is a Hokkaido uni hand roll, which was creamy and rich in briny umami and with a gentle sweetness. You can taste the difference of uni from Japan versus those from Boston or Vancouver. This is so much better. To wind down the sushi part of the experience, it quickly followed with tamago which they coated with sugar on the top then torched it so it reminded me of creme brulee & made it that much more unique, soup (miso) and lastly, a green matcha panna cotta with some gold flakes on top. I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience & the amazingly high quality food here so much that I immediately made a reservation to come back in 3 weeks time. I would definitely recommend Sushi Umi for an exquisite meal especially to celebrate a special occasion. Everything here is handle with love and care & they really do their best to make it a memorable experience for all.

Omakase is very good quality and not shy on the loaded uni! There are few surprises on how some of the fish were prepared! Wasabi is fresh grated, which is not easy to come by. Mackerel was slightly seared yet the fish is not densed at all like other places. Fatty toro was also seared, while most places served fully raw. I enjoy these differences! We did not feel rush and finished the course within the 1.5 hour limit. Service was great and the whole experience is well worth the price (especially during their winter/spring promo).

My daughter Sally invited me to try Sushi Umi, and it did not disappoint! You’re truly engaging in a unique dining experience where the degree of service, cleanliness, artistry and culinary expertise are unmatched. I’ve never experienced Omakase, but I’m so thankful to have come to Sushi Umi for my first time. I strongly recommend this restaurant for anyone who admires the Japanese cuisine, and is looking to taste the freshness of fish and robust and elegant flavours. A definite revisit for sure.Parking: Free parking lot is located behind the building.

Our overall experience with Sushi Umi was smooth and beautiful. I've been looking for an omakase experience for a few years now, but I was always taken back by the price (It can get expensive). Luckily, Sushi Umi had a Winter Promotion that brought their prices down to $98.00 for their dinner menus, and because of this, I decided to book a table for two.EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO OUR DINNER:I booked through their website. It was very straightforward and easy to navigate. They do ask for your credit card information as they will charge your card for any late cancellations. As your reserved date approaches, you will receive multiple reminders through email as well as through text. I appreciated the text reminders as they were very informative.DAY OF RESERVATION:We arrived at the location 10 minutes early as we didn't want to miss any of the menu items. When you enter, you will be waiting for the dining area doors to open in the small hallway. Although you won't be waiting long, I think it is significant to mention that the waiting area was clean and had calming music playing, which made the 10 minute wait not as unpleasant as it would have in an unwelcoming area.We were let in by party. As you enter ,hey will ask for your phone number to confirm your reservation and then lead you to your assigned seats. The staff was very kind and attentive. We sat, reremoveur coats, and waited for everyone else to be seated. A few minutes pass , and one of the waitresses asks if we'd prefer for our coats to be hung in the closet, which we said yes to. They grabbed our coats from behind us and took them to the closet. Right after, they help us push our chairs closer to the counter. Everything was done so calmly and respectfully that it definitely made you feel like an important guest. They asked us if we wanted any drinks; cold water, hot water, or tea, we chose tea. The tea was served, it tasted good, and it was very comforting to sip while waiting for dinner to begin.THE DINNER:We were seated on these very comfortable high chairs facing a wood high counter. On the main counter us we have our place mats, chopsticks, and our drink/s (not included in the dinner price). Approximately a foot away from us is an attached raised counter where a rectangular plate with ginger on the corner is designated for the individual sushi pieces that will be served to us.We were excited. The chefs were bringing plates and trays of something we were expecting to be good. The 1st thing we were served was a Seafood Crab Soup. This soup was GOOD. You know how normally, when you have anything seafood, all you taste is seafood. There is no separation of the ingredients whatsoever. Not in this soup. When I ate this soup, my first thought was "earthy and sweet." I had mushrooms, which made it earthy and crab meat which made it sweet, but what was surprising to me was the pieces of mussels that gave you the seafood taste, but only when you ate the mussels. I was impressed and slightly burnt my tongue because I couldn't wait to finish it ?. I'd advise you to take your time with the soup so you don't burn your tongue like I did ??.All the sushi on the menu were delicious and beyond expectations. My favorite will have to be the full fat tuna and the uni sushi (YUM). After the sushi, we got a hand roll, tamago (egg), soup, and dessert. The tamago and dessert were delicious! The flavours were an unexpected surprise! The entire menu was delicious ?  and by the time the waitress came to ask if we were done with our final plate, I realized that they placed our coats back on our chairs without us noticing ?. When your meal is over, you stay seated until they come up to you with your bill. You then can leave and enjoy the rest of your night. All in all, this experience was great! You feel like such a guest of honor in the simplest ways. We will definitely come back for both the food & service ❤️.Oh! there are no washrooms, so pee before you go to dinner ?.

Very impressed with the overall atmosphere, service and food quality. Was originally skeptical about the promotion deal and did not have too much expectation going to the restaurant. The surprise was overwhelming. Each individual piece was fresh with its unique flavour that made the experience memorable. Definitely worth going back!

It's about 3.5star omakase restaurant. For the price you're paying, you're getting decent sushi.Ambience is nice in the restaurant. It's space so 1 chef serves 4 people. It was hard to heard what piece of sushi I was getting, the chef spoke very softly and fast.Sushi is decent quality but not a "wow" factor that I must go back and have it again. When I compare the amount and quality of my friend's sushi vs mine, there was a difference in amount of uni, tuna etc. One of us got the lesser quantity...which shouldnt happen if im paying $100. Also, I do wish they don't charge $3 extra for tea.Had to knock off another star because the whole meal felt so rushed. Didn't have enough time to enjoy the 1st piece of sushi and was rushed to the next. Also, by the hour mark they were rushing us to pay, grab our jackets and leave.

We have been here several times now as it is one of the best omakase restaurant in TO in our opinion. We have gone to most and can say we were super impressed with Umi. Well done to the chef and team, they are setting the bar how omakase should be done.
