Racist and rude chef/waiter, don’t waste your money here. Disappointing visit, the owner/chef treated my husband and I poorly. We were very excited to come, and drove 1hour to try this place, but ended up leaving in anger.I fully agree with other 1-star reviews that Chef Gao was rude, hostile, racist, and has serious anger management issues. My husband was up-sold to order the omakase menu after being told the set that he wanted was unavailable (we came just 45 mins after their opening hours, so we found this suspicious but accepted anyway). When I asked to clarify the price, he was offended and kept shouting at me saying they have been open for 25 years, been on the newspaper (from early 2000’s, clearly outdated) even after I politely acknowledged that I simply wanted to clarify the price. He then made a racist remark asking if I was Korean, because “Koreans are cheap and always ask about the price”. I am not Korean, but felt personally attacked by this comment, and by his hostile attitude. I have never meant to offend him, he just needed to clarify the price and we were willing to stay. after all, we did drive 1 hour just to come here! We ended up leaving, it was not worth the visit. Went to a competitor down the street and had a fantastic dinner elsewhere.Kid-friendliness: Not kid friendly, the guy probably eats children as a hobby.

Ask the server whats best to have for the day and do your best to listen. They know whats good for the day. A very unique and good experience. Thank you for such a great meal.

WOW This is the true hidden gem of Newmarket. Best authentic fresh sushi by Japanese in Newmarket 100%. Not the type of sushi you see drenched in weird mayo sauce or weird crunchy toppings or falls apart when you pick it up with chopsticks. This is real deal. My husband had bluefin tuna which is rare to find in japanese restaurants AND very reasonable priced. Their homemade plum wine tasted amazing however with very limited supply per year. They have omakase, which we will be back to try! It is a small little restaurant hidden in small corner of an older building. To be honest, there is no way we will be able to find this place on our own. We are so glad someone told us about Solo! :)

The restaurant is a small and unassuming place that you would easily drive by and not notice. The chef there is a friendly, chatty and very attentive guy who is clearly proud of his craft. Sashimi was fresh and of good quality. He has had this restaurant for a long time and clearly has a solid and loyal customer base.

We got the omakase (chef's choice) and it was so good. Everything was delicious and beautifully plated and felt premium. The owners and chefs are a sweet, funny and very talented husband-wife duo. It's small, like a hole in the wall, would never find it if you didn't know type place. But it is absolutely incredible and I highly recommend.

What Jyo has created with Solo Sushi Ya is truly special. It shows in the owner's dedication to providing the best food with quality ingredients to his loyal customers. It's so rare to meet a chef that cares so deeply about his customers and his craft. Every time we visit, we are completely blown away by how incredible the food is-- you won't find sushi rice cooked this well anywhere else in the GTA.Bonus! Chef Jyo is a delight and we love to chat with him about the restaurant, ingredients, and life in general! I recommend asking him for daily recommendations, but even better-- call ahead to secure some special treats like uni or blue fin tuna when in season!

Overpriced and overrated. The owner sort of forcibly recommended us to order the chef recommendation. The seaweed used to wrap around the rice was broken. The shrimp wasn't fresh. The blue fin tuna probably made the dish much pricier.Whoever painted the restaurant walls did a sloppy job. Wall paint was spilled over the ceiling and window frames.Just not worth it.

Amazing.... It is great that I have finally found the best Japanese restaurant in the country. The chef / owner is a decent gentleman, he loves and passionate in cooking. He could have charged the clients a much higher like those in Markham, Richmond Hill, Mississauga or Toronto, however, he did not do it and still honor a fair price list. ?

Terrible place. My friends and I walked in after a long day at the beach hoping to get some sushi. The host was very rude. We were told we should have called to reserve and said that he only had two servers working. All this while the restaurant had some tables that were clearly empty. All of these are definetely valid points, but they were said in a very rude manner. This interaction was very unprofessional and we regretted stepping our foot into the premises.
