One of my favorite authentic Japanese diner in the beautiful Japanese retirement home. Great service, great food with reasonable price. You can also watch TV Japan while you are waiting.

It is a safe, caring, respectful Seniors Residence primarily for Seniors of Japanese descent. Built with & supported by Japanese Canadians.

This spot never disappoints. They serve good food for convenient pricing, there is no waiting time even when they are loaded.

Little restaurant inside Momiji-still open for takeout in this Covid-19 craze. Thought that I would support this one man shop to help them during this hard time. Takeout is tasty-selection varies by day and is cooked fresh per order. Call ahead if you can!

We enjoy eating out. Last night we found this superb restaurant which we didn’t know before. We had a beautiful experience there with first-rate cooking and an experienced stuff and a professional cook. We added this place in our phone list and we shall no doubt return soon. Highly recommended.

I really can't believe this... I had no clue that this place had existed and I had worked in this area for seven full years... OMG! No wait... this explains it. Zero Sun Momiji is essentially a canteen in an old folks home for seniors of Japanese-Canadian descent. When I got there I was like where is this place. In the entrance of the old folks home is the registration area. Don't forget to sign in and use purel before entering. Once you get in you will make a right and at that point you've reached your destination. The canteen restaurant itself has a simple but warm feeling to it. I'd say on average the customers are all residents at an average age of 70. I stuck out like a thorn by gracing my presence there since I was not Japanese nor a senior, but what the heck I love my food. At first I didn't know if I should wait to be seated or just plant myself at a table, but a friendly senior just waved me to signal that I can seat myself, so that's what I did. Eventually the server came with menu and tea. As I was studying the menu I can hear Japanese programming played on the tv and seniors having conversation about how they go to bingo every Wednesday. But the general vibe I get at this home is a very respectful and dignified feel. I get the sense that most of the seniors are enjoying their time at the home. So while the meal may not be the best meal I've had, you come out feeling positive, which unfortunately is not the case in a lot of old folks home. Now the food. I went with a basic katsu don which came with salad, miso soup, a small amount of pickled vegetables, a tiny oden with daikon, bamboo shoot and konnyaku and two slices of orange. Most of the accompanied items were decent. If you do hope to dine at Zero Sun Momiji, do keep in mind that the chef is cooking for mostly the senior citizens, so the food is prepared with their taste and health in mind. The rice was piping hot when it came and maintained its warmth for a long time, which is something seniors typically love. The rice itself is a bit too wet with a soupy sweet sauce. I figure that this was by design since the seniors won't be able to handle the hard rice. The pork katsu was very tender and for me lacking a bit of bite. The batter basically lacked any crunch whatsoever. An exceptional katsu don will allow for the flavours of the sauce and eggs to soak into the batter but yet retain a slight crunch. Again the texture I think was by design to fit the taste of the seniors. Would I come back? For $13 it's definitely a decent dinner deal. However because I don't work in the area anymore, it's a bit too out of the way and the food is not exceptional enough for me to make the trek. But I'm glad to see a wonderful place for the seniors that will be able to remind them a taste of home. Oh btw... they do encourage a 15-20%tip when you pay.

Okay, the atmosphere and location aren't great (it's located on the second floor of a seniors building) but given the affordable prices and authentic home-made style cooking, it's really a hidden gem. Avoid the seniors rush-hour (lunchtime 11:30am to 12:30pm and 4:30 to 5:30pm) or you'll be waiting a long time for service. Their tofu salad is AMAZING - very fresh and delicious and try the nabeyaki udon soup - also very delicious and it tastes like mom made it (your Japanese mom!).
