We've lived in Downingtown for 12 years and before that (with a 5 year stop in between in another state) in Thorndale for 10. Had driven by this place only on occasion but never thought to stop in. Then I saw the great reviews on Yelp, and we decided to try it. Outstanding chicken cheesesteak!! We will definitely be back to try other items. (We almost stopped tonight on our way home from a baseball game in Baltimore, but it was really too late for a meal (8:30pm).)

Great food and great people! We ordered cheese steaks and pizza’s. They were all excellent and fast for a Friday night. I didn’t take the pictures before they were eaten!

I just opened a business around the corner from Sam's and had the pizza for the first time yesterday. It was amazing! I got a personal size plain cheese pizza and it was the perfect size for one person. The crust was just the right thickness and had just enough chewiness while still maintaining the right amount of crispiness. I even ate the outer crust which I don't always do. The sauce to cheese ratio was just the way I like it and it was made fresh while I waited. It didn't take more than 7-8 minutes but the wait was fine because I enjoyed taking to the very nice owner (Sam himself!) and some of the locals. This place is not fancy but it is super clean. (I noticed he got 100% on health dept reviews, too!) The counters are worn from many people over the years coming in to chat and grab a delicious bite to eat. To me, that indicates a loyal following. I can only imagine the great stories that have been told at that counter over the 40+ years he said he has been in business! I definitely recommend this "no frills" corner pizza joint and I plan to go often! Thanks, Sam!

We had the pleasure of eating at Sam's last week on a business trip to Downingtown. He opened the place in 1976 and it maintains that same vibe. My colleague and I both ordered a pizza cheese steak with pepperoni, onions and mushrooms. Wow! The bread and the love that went into making it! Make sure to save room for a stop at Sam's next time you're in town!

This nondescript corner pizzeria is better than it's closest competition (you know who you are). The pizza is crisp and chewy, the cheese in proper ratio and the sauce seems generic but is good enough. If you're nearby and hungry, there is worse options, two in particular blocks away on Lancaster Ave.... Drive around the block and hit up Sam's.

Sam’s is where you want to go if you want the best classic. It reminds of another Sam, The Garden Village in West Pittston. I can’t describe it. Nostalgia? Perfect amount of meat and cheese, fresh peppers , lettuce, tomato, and onion. Major thing is the roll. The roll makes or breaks a hoagie, here it shines like the rest. My advice, get the hot and sweet peppers on the side, same with the oil and vinegar. Don’t let someone else’s over/under abundance of condiments dictate the greatness of a hoagie.
