I would say I was unlucky to have my car break down In front of 9 Mile Legacy, but the opposite is true. I was fortunate this happened in front of 9 mile legacy brewing where Shawn was out to make sure everything was ok, helped direct traffic and offer me water and a place to cool down in the hot sun. He embodies what a local business owner (and just overall good person) should be, cares for the community, willing to help those who need it, and empathetic. Not only after staying over an hour with me while waiting for a tow truck, he then also was nice enough to gift me with a 12 pack of mixed beers (all delicious) to cheer me up.

During COVID, they both took a pay cut, boosted staff pay up $2 an hour in recognition of the hardships we were about to face, and then found ways to operate with heavy restrictions. I went from casual to nearly full time, started a COVID safety committee and the owners used my PhD background to get me into their operations team, leveraged my work during COVID for provincial recognition and then made sure that they elevated me as the person responsible for that success, and now are supporting me staking out on my own.Anytime the company has had to downsize, they often do so by finding the next-step for their best people and finding them attractive, career starting positions in fields that they’d completed schooling in, or new things they’re interested in pursuing.It’s not hard to lift staff up, to create and then keep good people. It takes a commitment to your employees, perhaps some empathy, but a whole lot of gratitude and that seems like a hard thing for most companies to have for their staff.Edit: name of the brewery is 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, Saskatoon! They’ve got a flagship nano-taproom if you’re ever in town, but they’re really working hard to get their distribution wider reaching. Available in most liquor stores in Saskatchewan, hopefully interprovincial soon ;)"
