Stopped by for lunch as I was craving some ribs on the way through Memphis. The chopped pork sandwich and the ribs were fantastic. The slaw was a hit as well, it compliments the smoked meats so well. Definitely stop by before they run out!

Not at allll the Paynes I had such fond, unforgettable memories of! Sign on the door "NO Barbecue!" Link sausage seemed to have been as much as what was cooking! So disappointing ?Parking: Just in front of the place! First come, first serve as far as I could see?!

Good food, good slaw! If you like acidic/vinegar based sauces this is a great place for you. Atmosphere inside is dark but the food was good! Canned drinks or bottled water, order at the counter!

This is a great neighborhood bbq spot! The chopped bbq is awesome, but the smoked sausage is the most popular. The smell just lures you in and those big sandwiches don't disappoint. This is a hungry man's brown bag meal!

Oh my goodness; I rarely eat BBQ pork sandwiches . They don't sell bbq beef sandwiches and my sister convinced me to try Payne's bbq pork. Let me tell you I was not disappointed. I ordered the jumbo bbq sandwich plate. The bun was toasted and very crispy. The meat was enough for my large bun and two more small sandwiches I made at home.The beans and slaw were delicious, fantastic and very favorable. The customer service was exceptional and everyone was very friendly. I decided to eat there and the atmosphere was great with the old style restaurant vibe (old tables with checkered plastic tablecloths). Whenever you want some pork bbq and the most delicious bbq smoked sausage then Payne's is the place. Don't let the neighborhood deter you because some of the best food is sold in this area.
I went to Memphis twice in late 2023. First time around I tried central bbq and Marlowes. Central was terrible (food truck) , Marlowes was a nice sit down diner with an Elvis centered atmosphere (good food).2nd time around I went to Payne’s bbq. I was blown away by this bbq. It’s unique , tasty, and the atmosphere adds to the authenticity of this bbq. The smoke on the ribs and the sandwich was perfect. And it was all paired to perfection with their mustard based slaw. I consider this an experience of fine bbq dining in a local mom n pop atmosphere. If you’re in town and want that “Legendary Memphis Bbq” Paynes is the place to go.
I love this place. The owners are super nice. The location may deter some people from going but I felt totally safe. Even the customers eating inside was nice. Love the atmosphere. The Jumbo sandwich is huge. I could have went with a regular. The mustard slaw, I loved it as well as the Barbeque sauce. It is on the sweet side so it might not be everyone but I loved it. I saw someone with the hot dog and it was huge too with lots of yellow slaw.Parking: We got a close parking spot as more people are in and out with take-out.
Incredibly kind folks behind the counter and some of the best barbecue you'll find in the US! Can't wait to head back next time I'm rolling through.
