There must have been some change in management. The staff has been simply RUDE the past 5 or 6 times we have come in. We have spent literally TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars with Martinez family at Matt's restaurants over the decades, going back to when he was located on 1st Street / Caesar Chavez. Matt always greeted everyone personally, wearing his nice jacket and tie. He shook everyone's hand as they came in the door with his big boxer's hand. Mr. Martinez welcomed EVERYONE. What an amazing man. Now this restaurant is going through what we hope is only a temporary period of decline. There are MANY, MANY, MANY OTHER Mexican Restaurants in Austin that can whip out delicious Tex-Mex as good or better than this place. The ONLY reason we had continued to come here is that we always remembered El Matt and the magical experience he created for everyone! The Martinez family needs to think again about whatever changes they have made in management and get back to honoring the man - the rock-solid man who made all this happen. We love you Matt, and look forward to hearing that your once-amazing restaurant has someday been returned to its rightful, original beauty.Parking: The parking situation has become a nightmare. Cars are crammed in together and your only hope is to use the valet when they are busy, and the valet simply decides you they will park first. It is most certainly NOT first come, first serve.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Austin. They have tons of indoor seating, with some outdoor seating, and they have a HUGE parking lot which makes it easy to find a parking spot. They have great food at a good price. They have great margaritas and their free chips and salsa are also great. I would highly recommend trying this place if you havent been and if you have been then Im sure you will definitely be back.

This was our first time here, and we were not disappointed. It was very busy and we still received our drinks and food in record time compared to almost every other restaurant. We drove about 4 hours just to try it out, and we'll be doing it again soon!

Native Austinite family going to El Matt’s for decades. Never experienced or observed anything like the racial discrimination we endured Thursday. We were blatantly and unapologetically passed over while trying to simply valet park, then again while simply hoping to be seated and served. Completely saddened by the heartlessness and despicable cruelty shown to our party of loyal long time Customers. It was like something out of the twilight zone. Matt has been gone a long time, but until today his ethic and warm welcoming presence was always there. Not anymore. We won’t be back to suffer the humiliation again. We’ll eat at Taco Bell before we ever set foot through that big wooden door again.Parking: Terrible parking situation. They made the white and other families wait and only served the Mexicans. It was shameful.

Went here for lunch , it was a very different experience from the start. We asked for water and was given luke warm water without any ice. We order our food which was very delicious. However was given our check before we even finished our meal. Was told by waiter "yall may be in a rush so heres your check." I dont know what made her assume that.My party and I was rushed out of there it felt. I will never go back.

Beautiful place with ample parking and seating, unusual in Austin from my experience. Had a love lunch here with my wife. The food was delicious and the service great. Very attentive and knowledgeable, regularly checking in on us but without being overwhelming. Would love to eat here again when we're back in this part of town.

I’ve lived here 6 years and finally gave it a try. I really wanted to hate it based on the hype and the traffic but the drinks and the food were damn good. We’ll be back.

Is the king losing his luster? My first meal at Matt's was in 1969. As with all things times have changed. You get to be on the point on the curve where ruts have formed, and unless corrections are made slippage will occur.Such are some things at Matt's. Too big, too busy, and too much slack in certain areas. Chips cold, hard, and bordering on tasteless. Bob Armstrong is holding its own, taste, texture, ingredients are good until you put in on that plank of a chip. My main dish today was beef fajitas. Fajitas is a tough cut of meat to cook, done right it's a miracle of the afore trilogy mentioned above. So due to prices or demand the cuts aren't quite as good (?) (but part of cooking flank is taking a shoe sole and turning it into a smoky, flavorful delight) so it leads me to think it's being rushed to meet the demand imposed on the cuisina. The meat had spices but not enough time, or to quickly cooked to reach goodness. To the point I took home and the next day, after a nice warm up the fajitas had flavor, nice texture, the richness of the spice mix was there. Lending credence to the good(?) food is even better the day after.Guac was good, as was the Pico which says to me, dishes where time tested prep can occur are still great. Margaritas yummy, a couple of the house Margs on ice will allow you overlook sins elsewhere. Add in the aura of Matt's and the time with good friends well it's near the summit but not on it.
