Such a good experience here. Birthday occasion, and they surprised me with a birthday card with a photo of the table and gave us free dessert. Food was delicious. Steak chosen by you in the back fridge and tagged so you can recognize it. This place is ideal for a good occasion. Waiters really nice. Very recommended.

This is Houston's historic and OG steak house. All entrees come with a trip to their signature salad bar. I've never seen so many fixins in my life. I remember going here as a young child almost 40 years ago and enjoying the butter and fresh baked breads. The center cut filet is one of the best steaks I've ever had, well seasoned and melt in your mouth tender. The pecan crusted chicken is out of this world. Chicken ala Kiev will never be the same again. The salad bar has really fresh vegetables and the freshest mushrooms. Don't forget the historical artifacts like the original chapel doors from the Alamo. You can also get a picture with a Texas ranger statue. (They were so thin...) Crystal was an excellent server with good knowledge of the good drinks and attended to our needs impeccably. Service was better than at Michelin rated restaurants.

While visiting the Houston area from North Carolina, my wife insisted we have a Texas steak given that Texas is known to be a big cattle/beef exporter and it's history. When asking around for a good place to have a non commercialized steakhouse meal, this restaurant was brought to our attention by locals and with the good reviews while not being too far away, we had to give it a try. Attire for the customers was casual to semi formal. Once in the restaurant, you are immediately submerged into a lineage of Texas history as the walls are covered with artifacts from the area. Definitely had a Texas feel to it. The staff was attentive, well dressed and spoken. For an appetizer, we had the quail and it was, in my opinion, the best part of the meal. We ordered a cowboy ribeye which was great but nothing that solidified it as the best steak ever. The salad bar was clean with fresh ingredients and was actually recommended by another couple while we were waiting, stating that if they could choose one thing there to have, it would be the salad bar. The cheese blocks definitely were noteworthy. Brussel sprouts on the side which were okay, followed up by pecan pie. The food was good but not exactly why I would say they are 5 stars. The service and decor is definitely where you spend your money. If you're visiting Texas and want a Texas steakhouse experience and your budget is not tight then I would recommend it. Seating was a little tight to navigate through but manageable. There was a 30 minute wait. The server informed us that this steakhouse in particular was the #1 selling privately owned/non commercialized steakhouse in Texas and #13 in the United States. With tip, we paid right at $200 for 1 appetizer, 1 cowboy ribeye, 1 side of brussel sprouts, 2 salads, glass of water, 1 Dr pepper, and 2 slices of pie. The servings were of good portion.

I wish I could be as happy as some others who have reviewed this place. Waiter shared that this place is one of the highest grossing restaurants in America. Strange thing to say at the beginning of a dining experience, but if your average meat chunk is $70, I wouldn’t doubt that you’re one of the highest grossing joints around. McDonald’s earns billions every year but that doesn’t mean it’s good. Ultimately and with that “highest grossing” comment ringing in my head, the steaks here are overrated and the service we received a little cold for the pricey outlay. Wife and I were celebrating her birthday so we appreciated the gratis crème brûlée. It was fine for a steakhouse. The salad bar was good, great rolls, extensive selection and the cheese blocks a novel, albeit, risky offering in the post Covid era. Both steaks were ordered quickly (cowboy and tbone) and it was quite whimsical to select our cut of choice. Beats Roadhouse’s selection. ?! The Cowboy cut was the better of the two and held flavor and moisture. We needed to add table salt to our steaks; annoying because adequate sea salt on the steak while grilling is important for overall flavor. The TBone was merely ok but I can’t see what all their dry aging hoopla is about. Didn’t taste better than anything I can get for $30 at HEB and season/ grill myself. Texture was better than a fresh, non aged steak from elsewhere, but again… for the money, the gulf should be substantially wider. How was the service? Folks at the front are professional and very kind. Our waiter was a professional as well, but might be better suited to professionally slicing the cuts of meat rather than being allowed to serve guests. Not that he was rude or apathetic, he just wasn’t a happy and smiley sort who holds respectful eye contact, smiles and makes you feel at home. He came around to check on us transactionally but he could learn to crack a smile and practice hospitality. I wouldn’t be so hard on the fellow but as we got up to leave, he hastily walked up to the table to grab the signed check while I hadn’t even taken 2 steps from the table.. This seemed far too hasty and unprofessional… especially for a pricey establishment. Management here may need a pulse check, and they need to impart a sense of festivity and congeniality into all of their servers… If I can get waitstaff at Pappas, Longhorn or even Roadhouse to give me smiles and hospitable service, I should imagine a $200 steakhouse could learn to practice this with every customer. I wish we could have had the service and experience so many others have had. There are many exceptional dining options in Houston to celebrate a special day. I doubt we can take the risk again. Worse: after effects of eating here have been… rotten; what a waste- quite literally. 2 stars it is then.

The wait time was a little longer than I expected. I would suggest improving on that. However, the food was excellent and compensated for the wait time. Loved the salad bar!
