Cafe Viejo San Juan provides as authentic a Puerto Rican dish as you can find in Central Texas (or around Waco, to say the least). With ingredients all bought from Austin, TX and others imported from Puerto Rico, this restaurant offers its visitors a unique dining experience with international flavor. The place is a dive, but the food is delicious. In case you are unsure about trying out new foods, don't be afraid to go with something familiar. It'll still surprise you how each dish reflects the creativity and culture of the restaurant's owners. Plus, their rice and breakfast burritos are delicious, cheap, and very large. Enjoy!

My co-workers and I went for lunch. We were a little timid when we first saw the building, but glad we stayed. Lunch was great. We started with the Arepas de coco (fried dough with coconut) which had a great taste, we were also given plantain chips with a dipping sauce when we sat down. For lunch I had the Mofongo w/ Shrimp and she had the Mofongo w/ chicken. Both were beautifully presented and tasted GREAT. In case you were wondering the bowl is made of plantains - yum! Neither one of us could finish there was so much food. But we did order desert. I had the homemade flan - very creamy and she had the dulce de coco, which is fresh right out of the shell coconut with coconut milk and some type of spice. Very good, but would have been perfect with a shortbread cookie or something to smear it on. The owners were so nice and showed real appreciation for our patronage. They told us about their daily specials that they post on their facebook page. I will definitely be checking it out and going back again.
