It is diffucult to describe how disappointing and sub-par our dining experience was at Veneto last night, but here it goes:The greeting/seating part was fine but everything went drastically downhill from there -1. We started with the Insalata di Ricotta: warm, wilted radicchio and no dressing whatsoever. 5 minutes in an ice bath and a drizzle of olive oil would have made it ok, but overpriced at $18 in any case.2. Waiter was polite, but informed us he had to "capture" our entire dinner order at once, without any ability for us to order as we go, as we were not sure we wanted 3 courses when we first ordered. Turns out we dodged a bullet on this because I was contemplating one of their over priced main dishes but wanted to enjoy the first or second course before deciding. I can't imagine how disappointing that would have been, based on what happened next.3. My date wanted rissoto but Veneto policy is you have to place two full orders to get the risotto (?!). We've ordered risotto at nice Italian restaurants in multiple countries including Italy, and never have seen a ridiculous policy requiring 2 orders.4. I ended up ordering the gnocchi and my date ordered gluten free ragu pasta. Having also enjoyed gnocchi at many global restaurants, including Italy, I almost couldn't believe my eyes when the waiter served this dish - the best I can describe it is that visually, it resembled a bowl of grey curds. I immediately thought I must have not ordered gnocchi after all and this was something different entirely. Trying to keep an open mind (oh, this is special and unique gnocchi recipe from the Veneto region), I took a bite. Mushy, pasty, fake smokey tasting were the 3 initial impressions. The ragu sauce on my date's gluten free pasta could best be described as somewhat old tasting meat paste coating what was under done pasta (gluten free pasta cooks differently). We could only tolerate a couple bites each and then gave up. At this point we were looking at each other saying "what is happening?!"5. The wine was ok (we had ours by the glass) but take a look at their wine list. After trying the food, all I can assume is the wine list/prices are a marketing ploy to create the facade of a high-end Italian eatery, which Veneto is absolutely not.6. After 2-3 small bites of our pasta we were done, and then sat at our table, not eating, for waaaaaay too long before I finally pulled out my credit card and flagged down our waiter for the check. We also asked for to-go boxes (that story below) and our check. Again, we waited way too long for the bill to sign and they never brought us the to-go boxes (they were waiting at hostess desk, unbeknownst to us).7. We finally got outta there and as one of our friends lives very near the restaurant and has been unemployed for months, we called to see (with no small apprehension due to the poor quality of the food), if they wouldn't like the leftovers. We couldn't reach them, so headed home. On the way, we saw a unsheltered gentleman on 400 South and stopped to offer him our leftovers. He was very grateful, so we're glad the food was able to help someone, although we were again a bit apprehensive to share that food with anyone.Having enjoyed good Italian fine dining in New York, San Francisco, Boston, Italy and even Tokyo (amazing Italian there!), all I can say is 1 star is generous and if you're wanting good Italian food in SLC go to Osteria Amore or Matteo. Veneto was a painful thumbs down. If you peruse the 1 star reviews you will see several similar experiences. After our experience I cannot fathom the number of 5 star reviews other than maybe fake employee reviews (?) or somehow the restaurant attracts some degree of clientele with little exposure to or appreciation for, truly good Italian cuisine.

The staff is extremely attentive, the food is over the top. The portion sizes are perfect. This truly is a dining experience. Not to mention the wine is incredible. We shared a bottle of the Ripasso and it was phenomenal. If I had to complain about anything, parking is limited and the building is underwhelming considering the quality of the rest of the experience. Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in the valley. And they follow the European tradition of no tipping allowed. If you haven't had the opportunity to give this place a shot it should definitely be on your list.

This was the best service experience I've had in SLC, from arrival into the restaurant to the sommelier who helped us pick out wine to our departure. And the food was incredible. Will definitely be back for any special occasion.

Going to go out my way to heap praise on VENETO. I took my wife for her 40th birthday. She is from Northern Italy. Normally we avoid Italian restaurants like the plague but the menu was full of authentic Northern Italy dishes and ingredients. Once she saw Marco, the owner, is from Verona, she was sold to try.The service is exceptional -- like dining in Italy. Super high service and food standard Loved the small space -- there's only 15 or so tables in the restaurant. The Antipasta and Primer dishes were amazing. We did the beef tartare and a certain quiche-like dish (Sformato) very unique to the region -- my wife loved them and I did too.For Primeri we did the gnocchi and the pear ravioli. Exceptionally made. Tiramisu for dessert and it was beautiful - almost as good as my wife's :-).Have to shoutout Mariano for his hosting too. My wife felt back home and was so so happy at the whole experience. Thank you for making that day even more special.Highly highly recommend.

The food was great and the wine list was very impressive. While my server was wonderful, he was assigned too many tables so he could not be as attentive as you would want (or even expect). I do not know if this was a Sunday issue or whether the restaurant is understaffed all of the time. Regardless, I would definitely go back and I absolutely recommend Veneto.

Feels like a little vacation and not like any other restaurant in Salt Lake. Romantic with the best wine list around!

My husband and I came here for a romantic evening out without the kids and Veneto exceeded our expectations! Beautiful atmosphere and great staff! Loved the food! My favorite was the filet mignon.

Very limited menu choices. Pastas were good but luke warm. Fish was very plain tasting. And if you like your meat cooked anything other than medium rare you'll be out of luck. They won't prepare it any other way. Service was mediocre. They never checked on us after we got our food. We won't be going back!

Wonderful food, but Veneto's follows the very Italian tradition of making a meal last 90 to 120 minutes. We were told this when we asked why it was taking so long for our second course to arrive - 2 orders of rare filet mignon does not take almost an hour to prepare, so apparently this was a deliberate delay, for which they apologized (but why apologize if this is deliberate?). Odd. If you are happy to have a long meal, then Veneto's is a fabulous place to have it.

Absolutely loved this restaurant. My husband and I went for date night and it was so romantic, the owners even greeted us and took the time to go up to each table and greet their guests. The food is incredible and very authentic. This is our new favorite spot for Italian food in Salt Lake. Highly recommend.

I had such an amazing time dining at Veneto. They truly encompass that European experience. Their wine selection was the best I have seen in Utah, and the food was the best Italian I have had stateside, outside of Italy!

I had the tasting menu with matching wines and was so impressed I came back 3 days later for another dinner. The food is very well prepared and wines outstanding. The staff is attentive and friendly. I live in New York City and have travelled a lot in Italy so I am used to very good Italian food and Veneto right up there. If I lived in Salt Lake City I would be a frequent customer.
