We were looking for a good sandwich place to pack a picnic lunch for our visit to Assateague. We were told that Steve’s makes the best sandwiches on the island but were skeptical about getting food from a gas station. We were pleasantly surprised by the menu and the server was very accommodating when we asked to customize two halves of a single sandwich. Overall, we would recommend Steve’s. Just look past the location.

When you first walk in the aroma of mothballs fills your lungs, the prices aren't horrible, but as you stand and wait for your subs you begin to notice how filthy the place is. The floors haven't been swept in weeks and by the looks never mopped. As you take a stroll trying to forget about the sanitary conditions your food is being prepared you start to see more and more health code violations. My 7 year old daughter kept asking "daddy what is that smell". The place is down right unsanitary. So now for the food......I myself do not have a weak stomach, thanks to uncle Sam and my career as a police officer, so I've ate my fair share of spit and God knows what; so a hair in my food I can shake. Ten minutes later we open our subs and the mothball stench slaps us in the face. Of the 3 different subs we purchased they all had the same odor and same taste, it's like all the different meets marinade in the same slimey, fly incested cooler. Needless to say I'm starving right now and will be taking an early dinner.

For the second time in the last month the bag the sub came in and the sub itself smelled like mothballs!! What's up with that? The roll was not fresh either time and the amount of meat/turkey was very stingy. Guess we won't be going here anymore. Such a shame after the wonderful quality and service Steve always provided. Sad.

We stopped in here for some sandwiches to take back to our hotel. Note that the 'small' size is like a 12" sub so order accordingly. We got two 'small' subs and two sides and half of everything got saved for another meal. We selected the potato salad and the macaroni salad. Our subs were the Italian Cold Cut and the American Cold Cut. This shop has a nice selection of soft drinks and juice, adult beverages (beer and wine) as well as snacks and some items you may have forgotten to bring on vacation like bug spray. They also sell VA lottery tickets and have a few gas pumps.

Prior to Steve's II Express going under new ownership I would have rated them 5 stars on the quality of their deli meats and their generous portions. Now after giving it a couple of tries I'm very disappointed in the quality of deli meats they are using in their subs. My Italian Sub meat tasted more like thinly sliced baloney and ham with lots of lettuce. The rolls are also not as good. It's unfortunate since Steves II is in a great location and makes it convenient to grab a sandwich to take to the beach. Steve was a real guy who prided himself on providing delicious food to his customers. The new owners will do well by doing the same.

Close to Chincoteague Island, decided to stop for subs. Great beer selection for a smallish place. Got our Guinness Blonde for a decent price and 10% off for launch weekend! Sandwiches are delicious and you can also gas up here if needed.

Stopped in for sandwiches after hearing Steve’s had the best hoagies on the island. I would have to agree. Darlene, the lovely lady making the sandwiches was pleasant to chat with and sure does know how to make a good sandwich!!
Steve's looks unpretentious from the street, but the food is fantastic. Greek desserts, the best chicken salad on the island, wonderful subs, and more. Picnic tables outside for safe eating.
