Me and my wife stopped by here today. The brisket was way too fatty. The potato salad had good flavor, but potatoes were too hard half a pound of chicken barbecue. They heated it up in the microwave in a Styrofoam cup and served it to me order macaroni and cheese, and they forgot to give it to me, this is my third time at this place and my worst. Don’t know whether it’s worth trying again.

I ate here for the first time about 5 years ago and it was great. Fast forward to now, I was not impressed. The brisket I ordered was dry and heavily peppered. I love pepper, but that was way too much and way too strong to the point where I didn't want to eat it less than halfway through. My wife got a half stack of ribs and the meat was so tough, I thought both her and I were going to pull our teeth out trying to get that meat off the bone. As a standard with ribs, I feel like it should fall off the bone. Anything else is overdone or not done right. The BBQ sauce on the ribs was ok. Nothing special. The vinegar sauce was also just ok. I like a good Carolina style sauce, but when it's mostly vinegar I taste, there isn't enough of everything else. The sides were mediocre at best. Standard fare I can get anywhere else. I was disappointed this time around because 5 years ago, I loved it. I raved about how good it was and finally when I got my wife to try it recently, it was not a good experience. I'd be willing to give this place another try, but not anytime soon.
Great food but the service is lacking.When I asked about how long my order would take the very sweaty guy said “that depends on the cook.” Really man?For the $15 for a single meal the value isn’t worth it as good as it was.

My husband and I came in last night to try Carters because of their reviews and word of mouth but I was highly disappointed with the food. The pulled chicken was incredibly dry, and the bbq sauce was so acidic and watery, I couldn’t even use it to make it moist. My husband got the brisket which was bland and basically just unseasoned meat. The sides were literally the size for an infant and the sweet tea tasted old and sour. Needless to say, we won’t be back. $30 of food and it tasted like hospital food. Such a shame.

There a couple weeks ago. They only had two gentlemen working. Got a large Grandma’s bbq sandwich and it wasn’t what it used to be. Cold large bun had cool bbq that I couldn’t hardly see under the large pile of coleslaw. The one cook in the back must not understand the the large bbq is supposed to have more meat than the regular sandwich. I asked before about the amount and was told the large has more meat, not just bigger bun. It will be a while before or if I go back. Too bad, because I always loved their food.

Growing up in North Carolina, one becomes convinced that has the best pork BBQ anywhere....Carter's is as good as any I've had...excellent BBQ, sides, and banana pudding.

An employee must really be jealous to get another fired because they suck. Curious as to why the owner doesn't ask questions and just blindingly listens to questionable cooks..
As much as I love your food your service is going down hill. For $14 a straw, napkin, and 1 pack of hot sauce isn’t too much to ask for. I just got to work excited for lunch and I have no silverware to eat my sides guess they can wait until I get home tonight, no napkin, straw, or hot sauce and I asked for these when I called in my order. Service is just as important as taste.Also the limeade doesn’t taste like a limeade it taste like lime water.

We attempted to dine here this evening, 5:10pm, however we were ignored when we entered. We have eaten here for years and have never been treated like this. After entering we noticed one gentleman in the back walk up to see us and then turned away. Him and the other gentleman in the back continued their conversation and joking. I walked around the counter and to the rooms on the side and back to the front and still no one came out. We waited a few more minutes with our daughter trying to be helped and eventually had to turn away as we heard the men in the back cursing. We’ve heard the original owners have now sold the business and the new ones clearly do not even care. It’s really such a shame to see a good local small business be ruined by the new owners and staff. We will never be coming back again.

The food was fabulous! This is a small spot in rural VA. What it lacks in ambience it makes up for with the flavor of the food. The brisket was great, cornbread fresh, potato salad was impressive. If you are in the area you won't be disappointed.

I brought home the Grandma and Carter Platters. Each came with potato salad, baked beans, Cole slaw, and corn bread muffins. I would've liked to try the macaroni and cheese, but they were out.What I had was tasty. The BBQ was moist and flavourful. The sides were different, yummy.I'll try dessert next time cuz I'll definitely be back.
