Loved the momos! Authentic mountain food one should not miss in Norfolk

Momo is " my god" in my language and boy do these people speak it well. Chulo is a hole in a wall Nepalese restaurant in Military Highway. What I like about this place is that the staff and the chefs are so nice and homely. I sat down here pre-COVID times and pondered which dishes I should get , and they humbly told us what's good. Definitely get the momo and its sauces. I think it will change your world about the term dumplings. Those guys are an explosion of flavor! Please do not miss this restaurant!!!

Very hard to connect with restaurant. You never know if it's open or closed. Also may need multiple calls before it get picked up.Definitely need to update their status.

Delicious Nepalese food. Only choice of Nepalese on the Southside, but unique compared to Nepalese food in Peninsula (see Aago's). When ordering pickup, be sure to call their number to let them know you are outside. May have to call their number several times to get a hold of them.

Sigh- I'm d**** For the last two hours I've been feeling salty towards Chulo thinking they forgot an item in my order. Spoiler: they didn't. Right now Chulo is open for to-go only. You can place your order through Doordash or Grubhub. I noticed they also have their menu on Postmates, but ordering wasn't available. I went with Door Dash and selected pick-up so I would have an excuse to get out of my house. As it is with most restaurants on 3rd party sites their prices on DoorDash are a little higher vs what is posted on their menu. I don't mind paying a few extra dollars, especially if it offsets the business's cost to be listed on the 3rd party site.Their dining room is locked from the public. When they day to-go only, they mean it. When I arrived there was another customer waiting outside. He called and they came out with his order and I let them know I was ready to pick up mine at that time. My order came out a few minutes later. I thanked her and went out to my car ready to grab some pictures before heading home. When I opened the bag for pictures discovered that I was missing 4 MOMOs from the sampler platter. I only had 8 instead of the 12 I ordered. So I called a few times. Went back up to the door and knocked. Left voicemails. Tried calling through the numbers listed on different websites in case there were different numbers associated with each website. After 10-15min I gave up and headed home.Everything was so good I was planning to forgive the mistake and inconvenience. I had already read fantastic reviews, but this exceeded my expectations. Everything I tried had a slight level of spice to it. Might be too much for someone who is sensitive to spice. For me it was perfect.I got the "getting hungry" lunch special--Spice It Up Choice: Spicy Potato-Side Choice: Naan-Main Side Choice: Daal Makhini-Premium Choice: Lamb CurryEverything was fantastic. Note about the lamb, they cook it with the bones. I know some people who would be uncomfortable with this so I figured I'd include it in my review. I loved dipping the naan into the sauce. I don't know much about Nepalese food, but I enjoyed this introduction. I can't pronounce Daal Makhini, but now I know that I enjoy eating it. It was a lentil soup- I think. I'm not sure what the "spice it up choice- spicy potatoes" meant. I didn't notice any potatoes. The container that I thought contained spicy potatoes actually contained my four "missing" MOMOs. Again, I'm sorry Chulo for thinking you made a mistake. I was the mistake. I feel so dumb.SO now let's talk about the MOMOs. I definitely recommend getting the sampler platter. It comes with 4 steamed, 4 fried and 4 Chili Fried. Now I know that the chili fried come in a container so you get that tomato chili sauce. (Facepalm emoji). If I had to choose one I'd go with just the fried MOMOs. But why choose? They all had a little spice to them, but nothing that made my mouth burn. Very different spice profile compared to XLB and other East-Asian dumplings I'm used to. I loved it! Just don't be like me- know your sampler will come in different containers. Even when I thought my order was messed up I was excited to return to try more of Chulo's menu. I was also comforted by how cautious they are being from a pandemic-safety perspective. The woman who brought me my food was wearing gloves and a mask. It wasn't curbside in the "stay in your car" sense, but you can't enter the building so it kind of counts as curbside still I guess.

The Momo platter tastes awesome and generously filled with ground meat and tasty dipping sauces!

A little disappointed, I should've called before I went. I went last week and this place I think it is shut down. (Might be wrong so don't quote me) The hours on the website says it opens on certain days and I'm quite sure I went on a day it was open so you really got to look at the hours that's posted on their website for specific days.. I think they're closed in the afternoon on certain days.. When I got there I called no answer. I wanted to taste the food so bad because the menu online looked promising. Next time I will attempt to call 1st and then go again, so I can't really leave a good review and rate truthfully because I haven't taste the food as of yet. The website requires me to leave a rating so I'll give it a three star to give a positive note/benefit of a doubt.. I'll keep investigating!

Awesome flavors and great serving sizes! I really liked the chicken and paneer curry.

Ordered a lunch special to go. I had curry chicken with a side of steamed white rice and veggies which consisted of cooked mushrooms and onions in a delicious sauce. It was $10.11 after taxes. I was able to share some with my friend and still be full. Was so flavorful. Chicken obviously had been cooked well as it was falling off the bone. Will definitely return once it is safe to dine inside.

I ran across Chulo while contemplating take out during this Pandemic . Tired of cooking every night. I actually had just made Chicken Bryiani for dinner which is one of my favorite Indo/Pak dishes. I've been planning what I wanted to order all week. I called about 45 min later and was greeted by a friendly lady who offered to explain each dish. I was interested in Timbur chicken. 5he nice lady said she can make it although it was not on the menu this particular day. Very familiar with the menu, I ordered Chicken Chili, Chicken, curry chicken, Timbur chicken, pakora, Paneer curry, Naan, galub Jamon and. Mo mo sampler platter. Each dish was of flavor and warming spices. Lamb curry was offered on the house, due to a small issue my order. All good. I will go back and try the rest of the menu.

If you go, go during lunch time! Their lunch combos are massive and cheap. You can get quality food and a variety to try. The dishes tend to be a bit spicier but the delicious kind of spicy

I was craving something spicy and hearty so decided to try out this place. I got their hungry combo (1 premier, 1 side, 1 starch). The lamb and chicken are laid out on the front counter. For the premier, I got the goat (+$2), which they heat up in the back if it's ordered. For the side, I got the aloo, which was not bad. It's this sweet but tangy mixture of potatoes, bamboo shoots? For a starch, I got the naan, which they heat up in the back (vs rice is sitting out in the front). The guy working the front told me the momos were the most popular item. So...of course after I already ordered the combo, I decided to add on some chicken momo appetizers ($5.99). He was right. My favorite out of everything I ordered were the chicken momos. The inside stuffing is unlike Chinese dumpling stuffing, the meat is more finely ground and the flavor is different. I loved the sauces that went with it as well. Do I think they're worth more than $1 apiece? No. But they are very tasty for a treat. The goat was very good (meat was on the harder side) and does not come with a curry sauce. The naan was fine, nothing special though. If I were to come back, I would order the momos again!

Oh my goodness! Stumbled upon this place looking for lunch. So glad I did. Wonderful food, pleasant server, reasonable prices and good sized portions. While we were waiting for our food I noticed the staff going out of their way to explain their menu and how the food is prepared to another customer who was not familiar with this cuisine. Later I heard that gentleman say that he couldn't wait to come back to try something else new. This place has been added to our 'rotation'. We'll definitely be back!
