This place has the best barbecue in Richmond, Virginia. It's not even close. This is outside dining only. This is the hole in the wall you have been looking for. The service and food is exceptional. if you rate this place strictly on its barbecue, it is not possible to give it a higher rating

Richmond's BBQ scene is rejoicing! Alamo BBQ, a beloved institution that's been dearly missed, reopened this week in Church Hill stronger than ever. The owner's warm welcome reminded everyone why this spot was a favorite. We dove into their Texas Trash, a revelation of chopped brisket, jalapeño Mac n cheese, bbq beans, and cornbread smothered in a finger-licking good sweet and savory BBQ sauce. It was a delightful change for this usually tangy-sauce fan, bringing back childhood BBQ memories. The perfectly refreshing coleslaw and texas caviar perfectly complemented the richness of the Texas Trash. Alamo BBQ's return is a win for Richmond. Don't miss this chance to experience some incredible BBQ!

Great BBQ, offer a good amount of gluten free options too.

Ate here before the temp closing. Good food, tried out the pork taco and jalapeño Mac and cheese. I'm not usually a big slaw person, but theirs goes very well with their BBQ. The Mac also has a good cheesy texture, definitely reminds me of a traditional southern-style baked Mac and cheese

Best Barbecue I've had in quite some time, love the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. Can't recommend them more.

They say this is Texas BBQ. I am from Houston and I can tell you this is not Texas BBQ. The meat was passable. The sauce was thin and just as sweet as it was trying to be spicy, but it did neither well. The mac and cheese was overcooked and still, somehow, had a texture to the cheese like a thickener hadn't completely blended. And they didn't allow exceptions, so if you wanted something left off, which is saving them money, it was refused.

Good brisket sandwich! Light and fluffy cornbread was really good! Collard greens were excellent, I didn’t get any bacon or pork flavor, just the natural taste of the greens with a touch of vinegar. The Mac and cheese had excellent texture, but a little shy on flavor, but nothing a pinch of salt and pepper wouldn’t fix. Overall very good!

Food was really good. Brisket sandwich & rack of ribs, jalapeño mac&cheese, coleslaw, cornbread — all worth it. Love that they allow dogs outside; our pup was a happy gal.

Just okay. After eating at zzq the day before which was five stars this was a disappointment. I asked what Alamo slaw was meaning what's it in and she goes just coleslaw. I didn't like that it was covered in sauce. The portions compared to 1/4 pound at zzq seemed about the same size. It took fifteen minutes for food and we were the only ones here the whole time. The potato salad was soggy. Customer service just okay not mean not overly polite. Honestly I'd skip it. I can see why on a beautiful Sunday that there isn't a line out of the door. While the prices are great, the food needs to improve.

There used to three things I could count on in Richmond, death, taxes and Alamo BBQ. I am sad to say my last experience at Alamo may have been the last. Me and my wife walked up to place our order and the menu was missing a few items. We still asked for what we usually get and the guy behind the register said it was no problem. With it being hot, I usually order a beer to drink while I wait. Yep, no more beer while you wait. So we get our order and head home. At the house we soon realize that our portions were so small it was ridiculous. The grilled fish was about two bites, far from the 2 whole pieces I usually get. The chicken looked as if they took a piece of roasted chicken, chunked it up and dropped in the container. No evidence of being smoked at all....white chicken with pepper sprinkled on it. I had a sausage link buried under a pile of pickles and white onions. The only thing that was still good was the cole slaw. I get it, inflation, hard to find employees etc., but man this is definitely not the Alamo I remember. We paid $37.00 for two platters that basically added up to 1 platter. I'll take my hard earned money elsewhere.

I had one of the best bbq brisket sandwiches that I have Ever had in my Life. The Cowboy beans and cornbread with real corn in it was Delicious. I will be driving from Newport News to Richmond VA just to get another one of these meals. Great job guys.

Always hot, but what do you expect at the Alamo. Food to go, or eat on the covered patio. Pulled pork w cole slaw never disappoints. Brisket is da bomb as well

Prices are cheaper than buz and Ned. That is kinda the reason we stopped by here but we realized buz and Ned was worth what we paid for...The ribs weren't really smoked for hours. The chef said that they "braised" (i say boiled) the ribs first and smoked for an hour or two. I cannot say this is real "BBQ" but I did enjoy what I ate. But the way they cooked the ribs was a big disappointment. We also had the tacos. I thought they were pretty for the price. You had a choice of either fish or any BBQ meat stuffed with their coleslaw and Texas caviar. It a bit messy but hey it's good. Their sides are nothing much to write home about. The service was very friendly. The girl behind the counter were helpful. But the place is swarmed by flies everywhere altho i see they tried their best to keep them away.
