Party ordered an appetizer (mussels), three salads (house and Caesar), two soups (French onion and crab bisque), three entrees (halibut, filet mignon with lobster tail, and salmon stuffed with crab), and two desserts (key lime pie and apple/peach tart). The mussels and desserts were the highlights. The salad dressings lacked flavor. The crab bisque was salty and lukewarm. All three entrees were overcooked (particularly the lobster tail, halibut, and salmon). That said, the salmon stuffed with crab was piping hot, which made up for the overcook...because that's how tepid the other mains were. We'll be back because we usually enjoy very much our meals here and chalk this experience up to an off night (it was quite busy). And service was lovely as always. Nonetheless, it was a bit of a disappointment given past experiences and that we were celebrating an early Mother's Day dinner.

Ordered martinis, house salads, and split the calves' liver and cheesecake. The food was excellent as always. We really appreciate the option to split an entree and add sides to the extra plate for a small fee. It allows us to enjoy a multi-course meal instead of only ordering one huge entree each.

Yet another triumph of culinary achievement at Chez Max Friday night. From the excellent Sambuca French 75 to the soft shell crab with cream spinach side it was a delightful and delicious evening. Oliver has the food and wine steward knew exactly how to pair for each course from white to red to champagne all via the well stocked wine list. There are places to eat, there are restaurants but there are few places that match the art of Chez Max.

My favorite “ go to” place when I want a venue that is all around special. Very considerate and knowledgeable waitstaff. I value their opinions and often follow their recommendations.

Chez Max is a favorite for a French fine dining date night. The food is consistently exceptional and the service is always attentive but not smothering. Chez Max is a local gem of gastronomic delights.

Chez Max is my “go to” places in Richmond. If you are discerning and appreciate excellence: excellent food, service, ambiance, attention, and an overall excellent experience, Chez Max delivers. Do not miss out on this Richmond gem!

Very elegant and quiet upscale restaurant. The Dover sole as good as it gets! Service impeccable and delicious dinners and fabulous desserts. T I suggest a shrimp cocktail apprtizer would be wonderful.... It would be nice if there were bigger portions of the side vegetable/ potatoes etc Caesar salad was delicious and dessert pear tart was yummy. Loved it I've been back 5 times

As always Chez Max delivered a top quality experience. Upon entering the establishment you know the time within is going to be excellent. Oliver is a fantastic food and wine steward and his young assistant is professional, polite and attentive. All of the staff, Roland, Troy, Richard and the owner, Brian are welcoming, friendly and beyond professional. Chez Max continues to be my favorite establishment for a truly unique experience in culinary delight.

Chez Max is my first choice for fine dining. Oliver does a fantastic job as food and wine guide and last night was excellent for my birthday. The champagne and later sambuca 75s were of fine quality. Ditto the food and presentation. Chez Max isn't a restaurant it's an experience in culinary achievement.

We had the Dover Sole which came with baby potatoes and asparagus. I also ordered the crab soup was delicious. The sole was filleted at table and it was delicious. We will go back.

Really happy with the food and service there! We celebrated my fiancé's birthday and had complimentary champagne ~ Delicious food and great service!! Probably my favourite restaurant in Richmond now!

Very elegant and quiet. The perfect place to engage in a great conversation. Service is impeccable and the food delicious from entrees to dessert. The sole cannot be beat, the apple/tart is wonderful. Fabulous food. It's a little pricey and I think the salads should be included. Also, I think the vegetable portions with entrees could be larger.

I would not recommend this restaurant for any private parties or entire room rental. There will be limits on the service because you will likely only have one waiter for your entire party. I have had better experiences at other restaurants with private rooms.
