I really really wanted to like this place. The shrimp dumplings I like but everything else was subpar.

I went to Chen's before a night out on state street one night and have been going back ever since. Classic late night comfort food. Highly recommend the Shu Mai and Steamed Buns for decent price per portion. The downstairs area appears to be a small dining space, but there's additional seating in the spacious upstairs dining area that overlooks State Street! Some other pros are they're open late and they bring out your food pretty quickly :)

Just poor preparation. Everything was chopped super large. The cucumber salad chunks of cucumber are enormous. The beef brisket for the soup was 90% fat and it seemed like cow ears were used. The kimchi was chopped very large. Nothing stood out as very tasty besides the homemade noodles, which are good. The broth was aromatic and spicy, but they only give out a pint which did not cover the contents once i heated it up and added it. Usually broth comes in a quart container for soups like that. Just wanted to try them. Today at least, it was not good.

The food here is pretty darn good. If I had to consider the fact that this place is in Madison/WI, I'd give it a 5/5. But objectively speaking, it's above average. If you live here, it's probably one of the best you can get here.

The scallion pancakes and dumplings (mushroom and chicken) were delicious. I, personally, was not a fan of the eel soup. The atmosphere isn't much but it feels super chill.
Chen’s Dumpling House had the best dumplings I’ve ever tried. They are mouthwatering good and were still great as leftovers.

Stopped in for some soup dumplings, and ended up with two additional orders of dumplings.Really hit the spot! There is only room for 8 or 9 person dining in, thats the only draw back - at least for me, I'm old.If I were in college at UW, I'd order and eat the dumplings right on the side walk - they are best eaten immediately after being served when they are hot and delicious.There were several sauces to choose from in addition to the dipping sauce they serve with the dumplings.Like Arnold said, "I'll be back".
I was wrong. the problem I had with Chen's has been resolved to the satisfaction of all. please disregard my prior post. excellent food and good customer service.
