While spending a day being a tourist in our own backyard, we stopped by this nondescript restaurant to discover the magic that happens inside. I ordered a double-brat sandwich with onions & mustard. The charcoal grill gives the it a smoky flavor that's missing when I grill them on my gas grill. The sausages are split in two and placed on a "Sheboygan hard roll". The bun is like hamburger bun with a crunchy exterior and soft interior. This place is definitely local culture that needs to be sought out since it's in a semi-residential area . While we there there, we heard some folks were from Kentucky and some others were tourists as well. The guy working the grill said he's been doing it for 24 years. I'll definitely be back.

Following a growing drumbeat of recommendations each week for what I believe has now been two years, I decided to finally try the Charcoal Inn. I called to place an order. It rang and rang. It rang longer. The call cut out. "Okaaaay", I thought, "I'll try again". The next attempt proved fruitful as a kind woman answered the phone and took my order: A perch sandwich with lettuce, tartar, and tomato with an order of fries. "20 Minutes", she said. Being all-too-familiar with the process of picking up to-go orders, I made sure I arrived about ten minutes early. I've been burned by this before: you show up on-time only to find your order has been sitting out for many minutes cooling down. Horrible. I showed up early and commented to the gent helping me, "I might be a few minutes early". "Oh no!", he exclaimed, "it's already up!". "Wow", I thought. I appreciated their promptness in executing my order, but thinking about the crispiness of the fries or perch had I actually came on-time sent chills down my spine. Luckily it wasn't my first rodeo. I returned with my food. I was wow'd. The perch seemed fresh, lightly breaded, and flavorful. The bun was soft as a cloud. The lettuce, instead of being a limp leaf laying over the bread, it was a HUNK of iceberg. I like that. Just a chuck of 'berg sitting on the roll. It added crunch to my bites which I cannot properly articulate with mere verbiage. The sandwich was delightful. The fries were good too. Perhaps next time I would ask they be "extra crispy"...a food hack my brother told me about at Culver's. Do note: they have literally a CHARCOAL pit grill IN the restaurant. You watch your burgers get cooked right in front of you. I cannot wait to try one of them suckers! I will return!
