And I went for a Waldorf sandwich, which had chicken salad, cranberries, pecans, parmesan cheese and lettuce. For a side, I went for an Italian pasta salad. And the soup of the day was broccoli & cheese, which was one of the best versions of the soup I've ever had. Mmmm. You Might Also Like. All work property of Candace Nelson. I love the salads, especially the frozen one. Their vegetable soup is great, but I really love the broccoli soup. The gourmet cupcakes (chocolate icing) and brownies. Yummy

So much here is hand made. You pay a little more, but I think it is well worth it.

Overall, I was impressed. This small, I would even dare say quaint, café has very high quality food and is really a great addition to Ronceverte and the possible revival of the once-bustling commercial core of the small city. In addition, the ladies who run this place seem very committed to it, though I will say the younger one at times seems a bit curt, though I don't think she means to be rude. What impressed me most was that while they had pretty standard lunch-time sandwiches and salad fare, there were some interesting items nonetheless on the menu. I had the three-salad plate and it included a chicken salad, a green salad, and a frozen strawberry salad. The chicken salad was one of the very best of its type I have ever had, the green salad was perfectly fine and healthy, but the frozen strawberry salad was the real treat. This was like salads of times past I can remember my grandmother making--fruit salads with jello and milk or cream involved. You can find recipes for such in church or women's club cookbooks from the 1960s-1980s but seldom anywhere else save perhaps a dinner-on-the-grounds or family reunion. It was very fitting to see such served here if the restaurant has a real interest in local foodways, which they seem to have in earnest. The no-bake chocolate cookie I had also was classic to this type of evolution of regional cooking and the second time I was here I had a chocolate brownie just as rich as good as one would hope for such a dessert. Ronceverte was once, I have been told, where people from Greenbrier and Monroe counties came to sell goods raised on their farms and to buy the products they required to run the same farms. As businesses moved to Lewisburg and elsewhere, the importance of Ronceverte aside from its CSX train operations decreased greatly. Hopefully small businesses such as this café will bring some success back to these historic storefronts.
