Naturally sweet beans, chocolate forward so the sweetness comes from the bean and not a burned bitter flavor. Perfect! Shop has eclectic vibe and fun stuff for sale, like cassette tapes and a view master! I recommend no other place for coffee!”

The staff… friendly and welcoming.

The caffeine… superb.
A barista from another shop recommended Steady State to me. I’m so happy they did. I was visiting from Canada and was only supposed to be in the area for four days… that was a month ago. I’ve tried to come to Steady State daily because my day just didn’t feel complete otherwise.
Just ignore the flavourless chain “coffee” places and support a terrific local business.”

Eventually, both times they begrudgingly removed the charge. Wait, why dont they just OFFER to sub another topping or take it off the menu? Its not my problem that you are out of a topping, right?. Also, Im tired of asking for lite ice. It should just come with regular ice not filled with ice and a little tea!. It's just annoying spending up to 10$, begging for an included topping explaining i would like tea with that cup of ice and the server rolling her eyes. No thanks”

“Top 3 cafes on my list. California cafe hits the spot for a quintessential California cafe vibe. This girl must cook organic, cuz you’ll leave feeling satisfied and fulfilled without any guilt of getting your glucose shot up like with usually compared dishes or getting your immune rung up through the ringer from processed or “enriched” ingredients. You can tell she clearly paid attention in culinary school since she cares about quality.
On my first visit I had the tomato soup with a grilled cheese +bacon($2 added charge). The tomato soup seemed to be freshly made and the sandwich had 3 large crispy bacon slices on 2 large sourdough slices. Its snuggled inside a business complex, you’ll have the quiet rumblings of cars and on occasion small planes landing and taking off from Carlsbad airport next door if you sit outside. Inside sitting available. Great job ladies keep up the good work.
On my next visit I had the hot pastrimi and apple crisp. Whatever vanilla cream it comes with it’s absolutely delicious and a little goes a long way. The hot pastrami freshly pickled sauerkraut, hot mustard, white cheese on sourdough”

“It's a hidden gem. I have driven by multiple times but I never knew this place existed. I was referred by a customer at another brewery. He said the sandwiches here were great, they were big and you could share one with someone else. He also said the beer wasn't the greatest but he goes for a sandwich often. Parking is not great and when you walk in there is a beer menu but you have to read the paper menu to find out what is in the sandwich. The sandwich took about 30 min to come out. All that being said the sandwich was great, definitely worth the wait! The bacon is crispy. The bread was good and it was actually just the right size. I ordered an IPA and it was very good my friend that I went with also liked his sandwich and beer. The staff was great and everyone seemed to know each other and were very nice. I will be a new regular here for sure. Oh also reasonably priced, beer was $7 sandwich $13.”

Otherwise, it’s a great spot for a burger and brew, to take the family or catch the game. I suspect that its proximity to Legoland is why their prices are so high. You can find similar or higher quality food for more reasonable prices.
For example, any salad here (that includes a protein) is going to be $20-25 which seems really steep. They’re not particularly gourmet im a way that would justify that price.
Pretty much any of their appetizers are $15 or over. Likewise, all of their burgers are $20 or over besides their most basic pub burger which is $17. Steep!
You’re looking at easily spending $100 out the door for two people: drinks, mains and an app. There are a lot of places I can recommend within a 15 minute drive that would either cost less or be better.
Anyways, I do like Karl Strauss. The food is good, the staff is great, you won’t be disappointed but your wallet may hurt. This functionally puts them in the $30-50 pp. range when they should be in the 20-30. Just my .02

As a first timer, I think the restauraunt would benefit from a small sign outside directing guests to the correct area inside to check in for a reservation. It felt like we were intruding because we didn’t know where to go and to be wandering around getting passed off from server to bartender to someone else to try and find a host to check in with wasn’t a great first impression. However, once we got sat, the staff were truly friendly. Our server was able to give us helpful guidance on the wine list and we liked the wine we chose.
The atmosphere was pleasant and the space is well decorated, but we did notice as it got more crowded later in the evening it became increasingly louder inside, which made it challenging to hold a conversation. Maybe some aesthetic looking sound absorbers would help!
Overall, a lovely little spot tucked off in a quiet street of Carlsbad. Definitley worth a visit if you enjoy a good Southern California wine bar vibe.”

“The kids buffet is like $14, which is the same price as a kids meal at most places around legoland. The adult buffet is like $25 or $27ish (definitely less than $30). This includes a self-serve, all-you-can-eat buffet with fountain drink, salad bar, pasta, and pizza.
The buffet and tables are a bit chaotic since it’s a free for all (you find your own table and people/kids leave a mess on the tables).
The other diners at the restaurant can be gross, like touching food and not using the buffet utensils properly. Like, a lot of the diners are kids since duh it’s legoland. But still.
If you have celiac or a food allergy, tell the host or cashier. Michael (the cook handling allergy/celiac meals) came out to discuss options with me. He was fantastic! He offered to make a gluten-free pizza (cheese, meat lovers, veggie, etc.) that takes ~8 minutes. He also offered GF pasta, though it would take ~30 minutes since they boil it in fresh, uncontaminated water (a good sign!).
Michael made me a delicious GF pizza—thin crust, balanced toppings, and clearly made with care. I also asked if he could make a safe salad since the salad bar is a gluten nightmare (cross-contamination everywhere). He brought out a beautiful, tasty salad and even offered a box for my leftovers.

Check in being outside is weird but doable. But we saw loads of people sneaking in from the inside and finding their own seat. No one was watching the exit for that.
Make sure to reserve ahead of time.
Dinner was much better than expected!! We only did one night, and even at the discounted price was $80 for two adults and two kids! While we enjoyed the food, we elected to get other dinner our other nights for much cheaper.
Almost no service, just being seated and then plates cleared.
One of the employees got after a family for standing in the walk-in line, even though there was indeed a clearly labeled walk-in line and then doubled down after folks explained this. That was uncomfortable for everyone around and was unprofessional.
Multiple types of hot food is lukewarm at best. That's probably the biggest critique I have.”

When we walked into the restaurant, (early 8:00 am) for breakfast, there was a table that had already been serviced with about 14-16 people. Michael, the manager was already taking their order. When he was finished taking their order, he came over to our table to take ours. He told us that there was a large table before us, so it might be a while before we received our order. “I found this place by accident while walking to Jack in the Box. But I had been wanting to try some fish tacos in California, and yeah, this place has fish tacos.
It has amazing fish tacos. They're six bucks each and they're huge. The fish are in breaded chunks, and there's a lot of fish on these tacos.
This is a 24 hour place, and most people sit outside. The folks in the kitchen deserve a shout-out. Most seating is outside. The menu is huge. And of course in Carlsbad, the weather is always perfect for outside seating.
Update: I went back the next day and got a breakfast burrito. It's as big as a house.
