Spicy Vines Winery Wineries • $$
441 Healdsburg Ave, Healdsburg

“I spent a lovely afternoon listening to live music, enjoying their Zin Master zinfandel, and loving the friendly and comfortable vibe. It is truly a family business, and the great flavor of the wine reflects the care they take in everything they do. It is a small and very comfortable tasting room. Customer service is top notch. I enjoyed the pesto, provolone and prosciutto panini. We spent a lot of time last summer going to wineries that our visitors chose. I wish I knew about Spicy Vines then! I'll be back soon. (They also make brandy and serve great beer for those in your group who aren't into wine.)“

“Stopped in for a quick tasting and to pick up a couple bottles of the Sav blanc. Ian was so helpful and gave us the exact right amount of information without pressuring us into wine clubs. We were in a hurry and didn’t intend to do a tasting but he gave us a couple samples and helped me select a couple bottles we hadn’t tried before. Dry creek has an amazing indoor and outdoor set up that I highly recommend if you’re in the area! Definitely suggest asking for Ian and having a glass of wine or tasting!“

“What could be better than an impromptu visit to our most favorite winery on a warm winter month day! We came loaded with a picnic basket of sandwiches and toys. We stayed till nearly closing time, just couldn't get enough of the sparkles. And the lovely, friendly Amista people are as beautiful as the landscape all around. For example: When a bowl of popcorn arrived , Harrisson, our 3 year old took a sampling and said 'but where are the spice over the popcorn?' It prompted a hurried trip back inside to oblige . Harrisson even said thank you. We love you all, Amista!“

Barbera

“Portalupi offers a number of wines that diverge from most of what you'll find at the majority of wineries in northern Sonoma County. Starting with a Barbera-based sparkler (a little drier, please). After wading through a couple of decent dry whites (Arneis, Vermentino), and skipping some of the lighter reds, we moved on to some of the bolder offerings: Barbera, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo-- all winners. Dolinsek Pinot was a nice surprise; a departure from the rest of the (Italian) lineup. The host of our group of six was friendly, informative and engaging, with just the right balance between taking us through the flight and giving us space to socialize among ourselves and discuss the wines“

“We definitely got the royal treatment. Ryan did our tasting & we got to learn so much about how the wines were made & about the winery itself. They put a lot of love into what they do. I've done two tastings with Bella and the wines are really nice. Our group of 6 all LOVED the Essence 2022. We tried Ten Acres Pinot Noir and a few different Zinfandel. All the wines were tasty. The whole party had such a great experience chatting with Ryan and learning about the process. Highly recommend visiting the winery. They are kid friendly too.“

Soda Rock Winery Winery •

“Wonderful little tasting room in downtown Healdsburg in the square. My husband and I drove up from Sacramento to meet his sister and brother in law. We ended up being pretty early so decided to pop in to kill some time because why not? We were the first people in so we got started immediately. I was handed a little menu showing what they offer and what tasting flights they had. I am a big red fan so I went that route. The lady helping us out was SO sweet and we ended up talking with her like we knew her for years which really made for a memorable first experience. It was becoming quite difficult for me to choose which I liked between the pours so she gave me two glasses and poured two wines so that I could compare. I had never seen that before and thought it was really thoughtful and it really helped me find what I liked best. I really appreciated that she left the bottle next to the glass as well so I could remember what I was tasting. As time went on other couples came in to pick up their wines as there was a pick up party at another winery in the square and we ended up meeting another couple from Sacramento! If it weren't for our lunch reservations, I could have stayed there all day and now I'm on a mission to find their winery.“

“Having enjoyed their wines in the past, we'd been wanting to visit the winery for some time. We booked the Winery Tour & Tasting with the hopes that the typical February weather would not "dampen" our experience. As it turns out, we could have not been more pleased! Christine was an excellent host. Her style put us at ease and encouraged a fun and informal discussion about the history of Jordan, the inner workings of the winery and, of course, their wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. And to top all of this off, the food pairings were amazing! Definitely a top tier winery experience. “My favorite wine/vineyard in Sonoma. They have been making amazing wine since the early 1900s and still family owned and run. The grounds are stunningly gorgeous and the wine is superb. Old school, non filtered, French oak barrels, good red wines. The owner, Mr. Rafanelli, sat down with our group of four for over 40 minutes and shared the history of the vineyard, starting with his grandmother coming to America from Italy. He was an absolute delight and it was the highlight of our weeklong trip! Of note- you must have an appointment to visit as they do not take walkins. Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley Wineries • $$
58 W North St Suite 102, Healdsburg

“I went in skeptical and came out smiling. This was such a fun weekend. We know the area well and are in Healdsburg a lot, so I was pretty sure it would just be same old, same old on steroids. Wrong. First, with 45 wineries to choose from, we made sure to go to ones we didn't know and were delightfully surprised. Second, every winery puts on a tremendous effort with wine selections, food, and entertainment. And third, but definitely not least - there is a sublime friendliness in the air. It comes from the winery hosts, as well as the guests who are visiting. Enjoying the exquisite weather, drinking delicious wine, and sampling foods designed to augment the wine you're drinking - in beautiful surroundings - who wouldn't be friendly?! We met folks, we listened to music, we bought some wine and met winemakers and chefs for two days of California wine bliss. We'd do it again in a heartbeat. Favorite finds were Mauritson - boy did they put on the dog. We discovered their reasonably priced, delicious sauv blanc they paired with a delicious buffalo cauliflower dish. Their reds were matched with an amazing cassoulet and divine french dip sandwich. Of course, the food was prepared by Charlie Palmer's team, and the Chef himself was there to sign his new cookbook. We also loved Truett Hurst with its beautiful patio and their simply awesome Salmon Run Rose and Red Rooster Zin. The Red Rooster barrel tasting was fun and a great learning experience. We wrapped up one day at Fritz which is a treat with their Cave, fine wines, and tremendous hospitality. They have a remarkable view from their deck and the round tasting room is unique and charming. Day two ended for us at Seghesio in Healdsburg in their elegant grounds. There was good music, and an incredible shrimp risotto plus homemade sausage sandwiches. Calm and beautiful with a final taste of their excellent Zin was the perfect ending to a great event.“

This is a family run vineyard and the care and reverence that they have for wine making is what makes them shine. Their wines are named after family members, and we loved hearing the stories of how the wines were named. Our personal favorite (not just from this vineyard, but one of the best wines we've tasted in a while) was Angelo's Paint Brush - a beautiful red blend that was simply delicious.
