Location - so cute and so SF with the cable car running along Mason St. So charming! Atmosphere indoors - lovely space perfect for sexy date night out or just hanging with friends. Food - YUM! 1. Olive starter was OMG, I'm salivating just thinking about it. So delicious! 2. Salad du jour and Fish main were also hits Can't wait to return!

I am obsessed, this place was amazing!! Perfect for a date night, cute romantic little spot that was cozy and comfortable. Came here with my husband and we had the lemon pea crostini which was delicious, he had the tortellini with consommé and pretty much licked the plate, I had the 10 hour bolognese which was equally tasty. We both drink wine but neither of us know Italian wine as well so our waiter was wonderful at pointing us in the right direction. This place is a solid 10/10 - good spot, great food and wonderful service! Would recommend to anyone looking for tasty Italian.

This is a cute spot for a date night!Seems like on weekends it gets busier and booked up so we went for a later reservation. The vibe an interior is cozy and intimate. The service was great: friendly and helpful with recommendations. We all agreed the pasta was good and all got finished!Appetizers were good but not great--maybe some more options there would be nice.

Very authentic Italian but with a modern twist. Cozy decor. Excellent service. Great neighborhood spot. Hard to find parking so recommend walking or Uber.

AltoVino is a small, cozy Italian spot in Chinatown that I really recommend getting reservations for as there's a really long wait for walk-ins. Their menu changes regularly, which could be a plus or minus. I got two pastas and they were both yummy. Both were presented beautifully. The ragu was nothing too special but my friend thought it was better than the sweet ravioli-like pasta. I actually liked that one much better though because it was unique with the brown butter, sage, and pomegranate with a sweet nutty filling and something I wouldn't be able to replicate at home. Overall, AltoVino was a good time and I'll be back if I'm in the area again!

Taste 3/5. Authenticity 5/5 (but that means for the average 'Joe' you are not going to know what the majority of things on the menu are, or be able to imagine what they look like), Health 1/5 (quality of ingredients surely good but from a simple health perspective, TONS of butter and oil and fat and cheese and grease), Interior 4/5 (try to get a table in the back room for a more romantic experience), Service 2/5 (probably could have been 4/5 but server clearly trying to rush people out of restaurant), Location 3/5 (residential area), Overall value 3/5.

Great service, food, and cute decor. Highly recommend. I got the 10hr bolognese parppadelle and tortellini in broth and both were amazing. The portions are kinda small so order extra if you are hungry.

Will return to AltoVino again and again! Delicious food. Loved the bolognese. Service was perfect. And the restaurant itself is so charming. Great neighborhood spot. Thank you AltoVino for a wonderful experience

Their bolognese needs to be studied in a lab – I've never had one that tastes nearly as good.

Just absolutely wonderful. The perfect Italian meal with wine, dessert, the works. The capeletti were off the hook. Ridiculous. I want to plan every family event here!

Had a really great valentines dinner here. Everything was excellent and I can’t wait to come back and try the more exotic menu items

I’m up at 4 am, no clue why and I’m hungry. I scroll through photos of my recent trip to Italy and get hungrier. Then I randomly recall this amazing ragu I had at AltoVino. Such is the rabbit hole of my brain today.I first stumbled upon this place a few years back when my gf and I were randomly walking down this street after exploring Chinatown. Looked good, half empty, so we sat down outside for what was an amazing meal. I recall thinking “holy s***, what is this place and why is it here and why is it so good and why is it…. So good?” Since then we’ve been a few times more, and each time was equally amazing. For me what I find particularly fascinating about this place is its own unique balance across its often refreshed menu. It’s an intelligently restrained yet creative balance of tradition and new “California” flair. One dish may stick rather close to a traditional Amatriciana while another consists of an intriguing mixture of ingredients that just simply makes sense once tasted. There’s something for everyone and everything is excellent. It speaks to the experience and refined palate of the owners. All paired with a fantastic wine menu, your meals will be memorable here each time.I’ve recommended this place to anyone that has asked me, “what are some top places to eat in SF?” And I swear on baby Jesus that AltoVino has come out of my mouth within the first 3 places I mention, each time. And to this day, well I suppose to this late morning - I still don’t know why this place isn’t booked out every single evening. It’s bizarre. So ignore reviews that say “we weren’t satisfied because we were still hungry afterwards.” Which, is one of the dumbest reasons for mediocre reviews because, what, a restaurant is supposed to figure out or cater to your appetite? Ignore reviews that say “oh this place wasn’t authentic.” Hmm what sort of authentic were you looking for? What is authentic at the end of day?Because if authentic is a menu honoring its ingredients, staying true to the local spirit while paying generous and fantastic homage to the cuisine’s roots, then this is one such place.Ok back to sleep.
