recommended. tasty sandwiches and hot soups and a good selection of desserts and drinks. terrific server service-- very polite and efficient. importantly, they have INDOOR and OUTDOOR tables and lots of seats, so you can enjoy the nice weather outside or stay inside! and of course their art collection is nearby and their gift shop has lots of good stuff.

Museum Cafes are the grand secret- fancy delicious foods in any city can be found at the museum cafe- and thanks to a constant stream of diners, the food is fresh as well. No need for a reservation- and ample seating, always available. My fresh, crisp radicchio salad with blue cheese, walnut, juiced lemon dressing, slices of grapefruit- and edible purple flower- was beautiful to look at and a crunchy, crisp delight. I selected the oatmeal cookie with variety of raisins for dessert from among the fresh fruit tart panna cotta, and merengue choices. Deeeee-licious.

My husband and I were spending the day checking out the de Young museum and the California Academy of Sciences across the way. Food options were limited so we popped into de Young Cafe for a quick entree. The service is fast casual where you order and pay at the counter, while someone will bring out your food to your table. I'm not opposed to dining inside a museum since some of them have the best chefs curating the menus. We opted to share the stew which had a Mediterranean spiced broth. It was tasty and just filling enough for us on a cold, rainy day. We ended up back in the cafe hours later waiting on our Observatory reservation so we ordered the flatbread along with a juice and strawberry cake. While we spent a good penny dining here, we had gotten some major discounts on admission so we were happy to spend it on food. Service was quick and friendly.

Had a terrible experience here for lunch. It was very busy so when we had waited a half hour for our food we thought it was just because of the holiday lunch rush. After 45 minutes it turned out they had lost the ticket with our order on it, which caused all kinds of confusion. Thankfully we had a digital receipt listing what we ordered. They kept taking my phone back into the kitchen so that the powers that be could put our order together. I thought it would have been nice to offer a refund or a token of apology but it was too busy for that. Sadly the food did not make up for the wait; however, the atmosphere is lovely especially when you can sit in the garden. And of course the museum itself is fantastic.

What a beautiful space! The Cafe has a large indoor and outdoor dining space. Great spot to visit when visiting Golden Gate Park. Access to the cafe is free and not tied to the de Young Museum admission. It is only over-the-counter service. No table service here -- like most museum cafes -- this is pretty standard. The food selection is limited however, so I didn't buy anything to eat. They had pre-made cold sandwiches, snacks and baked goods. So I just had a cappuccino with oat milk which was decent.

Big queues for lunch, counter service and really overpriced foods. But it was good, that’s the point. Salmon was well cooked and with really tasty sides. I would recommend it for a lunch after or before visiting the museum if it’s saving you some time!

I have a soft spot for museums cafes, and the de Young Cafe happens to be an excellent one. This cafe is right next to the sculpture garden, so you can sit and admire the beautiful trees and sculptures while munching on some quite tasty food. The menu is a bit expensive. A bowl of soup is $14, the salads are $19, and everything else is $20+. There's also a refrigerated section with pre-packaged sandwiches that are $16 -- turkey, ham, roast beef & curry chicken. There are also cakes and pastries (small tarts, croissants, scones, bagels, slices of cake). I got a curry chicken sandwich and a slice of carrot cake w/ frosted cream cheese. The sandwich was quite good and the cake was excellent. I would definitely order the cake again (no need to try anything else) but I might try one of the other entrees next time. Counter service. Order at the counter and they will put everything on a tray or bring it out to you.

DE YOUNG CAFE WHEN: Sun @12:30pm (July) After checking out the special exhibits at the De Young Museum, I like to hang out in the cafe where there is plenty of seating inside and outside. It's a bit chilly out so bring a jacket, and you get the option of staying in the shade (where it's cooler) or in the sun. I decided I wanted something sweet, and they have a huge selection of that. But I went for: STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE - $8.50 Soft, light, sweet--the right amount of sweetness. I really enjoyed this. DUTCH APPLE TART - $8.00 Oh yes, just what I expect of a Dutch apple pie! Pretty darn good. I like that I can stay here for good amount without feeling the rush to leave since there's plenty of seating. It does feel very busy, with all the people from all over coming and going. Sure this place feels a bit pricy but it's expected in a museum, but nothing ridiculous.

The De Young Museum Cafe is a culinary haven with an enchanting ambience. The kale salad and vegetarian quiche are nothing short of divine, making it a delightful treat for the senses. A perfect blend of art and gastronomy!. We love this museum . Thank you for keeping us entertained and well fed.

Surprisingly expensive even for a museum café, but with good portions of very tasty food. I can heartily recommend the flatbread and the grilled pear salad!

Even though there has been a lot of negative press around San Francisco's downfall there are certain places that will always stand for its resilience and commitment to the extraordinary. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And, even thought its politics might drive people away, the dedicated denizens who choose to stay and fight for the city and all the glorious beauty, legendary culture and delightful gastronomy it offers make it a terrific place still. Case in point, the cafe at the de Young is the type of self-possessed, beautiful place that radiates all that California stands for and other states envy. This is one of my happy places in the whole world. To be able to have perfectly executed and elevated huevos rancheros with a side of Henry Moore art makes me so happy I am bordering on giddy. I've eaten at other starchitect museum cafeterias in other cities, but this is a rare combination of setting, service, people watching and excellent food. Tell me, how many places can offer you that?

After walking through the museum I like coming out to the cafe and ordering a coffee and dessert. Find a seat out on the patio. It's really peaceful and tranquil place to relaxParking: If their lot is full, there's additional parking facing the north.
