My ABSOLUTE favorite NO FRILLS Sushi restaurant. Tom and Wendy are WONDERFUL, and their service and attentiveness to their customers outstanding. The fish is always fresh, ample cuts. Being a "Bento" I don't typically eat Bento so I can't say much about their bento boxes; but my Mom loves em. Of course she does, she was married to one. haa ha haah All kidding aside, Fish-n-Gari is a solid traditional Sushi restaurant, prices are reasonble, service is great, and fish is DELICIOUS. My fave is the Sukura roll, Nigiri Sake, and Butterfish. I'm pretty picky, so I stick with what I know and what I know is, when I'm looking for some great reasonbly priced FRESH Sushi - Fish-n-Gari is my go to place and it should be yours too. :^)

DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM ONLINE - unless you want an annoying experience. I ordered a bento box online for pickup, I get a call from the place saying they won't honor the online price and I either pay a higher price or *I* contact their online service to cancel my order. As a business, the onus is on them to take care of orders and be on top of your online partners, not the customers. Absolutely insane and terrible customer service.

Amazing place. I come here all the time, the prices are very fair and the service is amazing. Super small quiet place with the sweetest lady serving the tables. This place is a staple of nob hill, if you like a small intimate dining experience you'll love this place.

The tuna in the dynamite roll was totally burnt and had zero flavor. Overall very low quality sushi.

Actually a 2.5/5, but that doesn't make much difference. This place is really close to my friend's house, so we always walk past it, but haven't ever gone in before. Three of us came in late on a weekday and the restaurant was completely empty. I ordered the 2 item dinner bento box with Tonkatsu and Sashimi (which is four pieces of the chef's choice of whatever they have that day). I got four pieces of different fish, maybe on the small-medium size, and I think it was salmon, tuna, and then maybe yellowtail and one other ambiguous fish. The quality was not too bad, but just smaller than sashimis at other sushi places. The bento was honestly very small and there was a huge amount of rice compared to the size of the tonkatsu. There was basically nothing else on the tray so I had like two compartments open, so it looked small for the price of $16.75. Not bad, but there are definitely bento combinations that give a bit larger serving size. The lady also brought each of us one cup of hot tea and that never got refilled, as well as they never came to check on us during the entire duration of the meal. I didn't even take a picture of the food because I guess it didn't seem very aesthetic, so I didn't take any pictures to memorialize it.

A great local sushi spot! Food: we ordered two dinner combinations. highlights were the spicy tuna roll, hamachi maki, chicken katsu, and chicken teriyaki. fish was fresh, portions were generous, and everything was delicious! Service: fantastic! we ordered take out online, but when we arrived our order wasn't ready yet. the kind folks there offered us hot tea while we waited Ambiance: such a cute spot! we'll be back to dine in soon

Fast service, reasonably priced. Unique rolls, but a little on the small side. Seem to accommodate requests for no sauce

This is my go-to sushi spot! It may be basic, but I love their golden california roll and unagi maki. Each maki roll ranges from $5-$7 which is an absolute steal, and they are so delicious! Their signature rolls are also very filling at a great price. The owner is a very sweet and friendly man, and the restaurant is cozy and clean. I highly recommend dropping by if you're in the area!

Fantastic experience there last night. We showed up with 20 people without reservation and luckily they had place for us. They set up one long table for all of us, and started bringing beers and sake without us asking, then kept bringing more all night long, taking good care of us. Then they started to bring delicious sushis and rolls. In the end we paid $50 per person, which I found quite reasonable given how many drinks we had, and above all how much fun. The owners were very kind and accommodating.

This is exactly what you want, and everything that sushi is supposed to be about. Fresh fish, perfect rice and no frills, bells or whistles. This was - hands down - the best sushi I've had outside of Japan. Simple food with taste for days; the perfect mix of an older gentlemen behind the glass case with the (fresh!) fish, his wife bringing the delicious bites to the handful of tables, and their (grand?)son doing his homework at the counter. It's far from fancy, and far from trying to be something it's not - it is "just" damn good sushi. This restaurant is in the other end of the city, and I've already been back several times, and haven't had enough yet.

We ordered the tuna poke appetizer, Philadelphia roll, California roll, spicy tuna roll, screaming roll (spicy yellow tail), and miso soup for takeout. The total came right below $50 which was a really good price for the amount of food we received. There were a few misses as the miso soup was oddly sweet and the California roll had too much mayo. I probably wouldn't get the appetizers again and would supplement with hand rolls or nigiri. The star of the show was the screaming roll and the spicy tuna rolls. Everything was packed very well and it took very little time to pick up our order. I will be ordering from there again and trying some of the other options.

If you're looking for great sushi, this is a place to visit. It is a small place with limited seating and only one chef. So if there's a lot of people expect the service to be slow. We had the sea urchin which was very fishy and ocean flavored. Be sure to ask for the price if you're looking to order this for it was very expensive but I felt we got a large amount for the money. I had the beef teriyaki bento and we thought the amount of beef was a little on the small side. We were the only ones dining in on a weekend but it seemed like they were doing a lot of takeout orders. If you're on Polk Street and looking for some great sushi, this is the place.
